[MACBOOK PRO 16" - 2021 M1 MAX EDITION REVIEW]
The Apple MacBook Pro 16 (2021) has been my main machine for the past seven months. It’s not polished. It’s not pretty. It’s got grease on the keycaps, a tattered folding stand on the bottom, and a worn leather skin on top. It’s traveled tens of thousands of miles with me, and it’s produced every one of the MrMobile videos I’ve uploaded since I bought it (including this one). While I prefer other laptops for play, 2021’s MacBook Pro is an indispensable tool for my work - the best I’ve ever used. Join me to see why, in MrMobile's MacBook Pro 2021 Review.
[ABOUT MRMOBILE’S MACBOOK PRO 16" - 2021 M1 MAX EDITION REVIEW]
This review was produced following seven months with a 16" MacBook Pro 2021 (M1 Max Edition) purchased by MrMobile's publisher Future PLC. At the time of review the device was running MacOS Monterey 12.4.

I traded the 16” and some battery life for 14” and greater portability. For my needs, I have zero complaints. Ok, one USB-A would be nice, but still…. 😎👍🏼

@@TheMrMobile Obviously not a call out because it's just the perspective you're viewing from, but I feel like the whole SD card Vs usb thing is very content creator/creative focused. I feel like most people need to use usb-A devices significantly more often than SD cards, but that's also who apple are marketing these devices towards.

Kudos to Apple for making a Macbook Pro that's actually made for professional users.

Ok, but macbook pros has been used by professional users only since more than a decade. Video editing is not the only profession you know. Most UI designers prefer macbooks as their default device. Apple software developers can only code on Macbooks and its fuss free. And many non-apple software developers too prefer using the Macbooks for its ease and smoothness. So, many pros have been using Macbook pro's for a decade. Me being one.

@@gareebthepoor8161 and many of those professionals dealt with some stupid compromises in day-to-day life just to be able to use a Mac. I'm sure Picasso could paint some masterpieces using a mop as a paintbrush. That doesn't make a mop a "pro" painting tool

I'm a teacher. I used to own the 2019 16inch macbook pro with i9 and 5500m graphics. The most mind blowing thing from this was the first time I tried to use this m1 max machine in class. It was 4 HOURS LONG WITH HDMI PLUGGED IN. Starting from 100 percent and wrapping up after 4 hours the battery was at 67 percent. Live streaming my online classes with HDMI plugged in has very similar results. This might be the first machine ever that I can use to take my class outside with me. I can literally sit down by the river in my car and live stream with 5G hotspot and it would still literally last me all day. People are saying how heavy this computer is. But removing the carger and the cables from my backpack actually brings the weight down significantly. God I love this machine.
@JuanOrtizR

I'm also teacher! And while I don't own this computer, I did upgrade to the 13" M1 MacBook Pro from a 2017 MacBook Pro Inter Core i5 and the difference is notable. I couldn't get through 2 periods without have to connect to the charger and now I can easily get through 4 periods without having to plug it in. With the 2017 the fans would turn on super loud when sharing my screen on Microsoft Teams and with the 2020 M1 I've never heard the fans.

I have been using MacBook Pro 13, company provided for almost 1 year now. I had never used Mac before, I really admire the trackpad, speaker, screen and overall build quality. Battery life gave me instant freedom from unreliable power. The CPU is nothing like I have used before. But Mac OS is really not my cup of tea. Hopefully, Linux works reliably on M1 Macs so that I can buy one for personal use.

As a dude with mad battery anxiety the MB Air has been a dream. I'm a developer and don't need the fancy screen the Pro has, plus the air is so portable it's ridiculous. I finally have a laptop I can throw in a bag and work on all day. I'm more excited to see Arm chips on the bleeding edge than anything else, when the day comes that I can slap a solid Linux distro on a powerful Arm laptop like the M1 macs, that's a dream come true for me.

I'll wager your Linux distro will never function even close to the native Mac OS on Mac hardware, so you'd want to have a very compelling reason why you must run Linux - otherwise you're compromising the user experience you could have just for the sake of feeling a little more unique.
@Games-tx1zc
@Games-tx1zc 2 жыл бұрын
@@andoletube incorrect, but I understand why you'd think that if you're not super familiar with Linux. I'm a developer, there are myriad reasons to run Linux as opposed to MacOs. Security, customization, integration with established environments and even preference. If you're looking to edit video or photos or do music production Mac is a great choice. If you're looking to game, go Windows. If you want full and total control over what's on your system go Linux. At the moment I wouldn't go Linux because the only M1 capable distro, Asahi, is not fully featured. But there's no indication that it would hamper the machine in any way if the distro is fully developed. I have a Linux Desktop that I love. It's excellent for my work, but if I want a laptop that suits my needs the only ones are made by Apple.

I'm a software tester and have been using a 16" MacBook Pro since early January. This computer just does it all. I can do stuff for work thanks to Microsoft Office and Edge being available on the Macintosh, I have my entertainment with Apple Music and various streaming services, and it even holds its own running Final Fantasy XIV! And then there's the battery life. Now what I do for work doesn't push the system too hard, but I'm happy to say that I can go multiple days on a single charge. Honestly, this is the computer I've been wanting since selling my Early 2011 17" MacBook Pro. No other computer has come close (though the ThinkPad X1 Extreme was one of the best) to being as useful to me as the new 16" model, which exceeds it's ancestor in every conceivable way.

I have been using the 14” M1 Pro MacBook Pro since the end of January as my primary system for work and it’s simply outstanding. I replaced a 2019 16” i9 16” MacBook Pro with the 14” pro and while I sometimes miss having the larger display, the overall size of the 14” model combined with improved battery life makes it a far better laptop than my old 16” pro.

Incredible review Michael. I've been avoiding jumping up from my intel MacBook Pro as they are expensive, but that battery life and performance is calling to me. And I completely agree that it's nothing special in terms of looks and the notch does look annoying at first, but if its for work, does it matter if it gets the job done?

I migrated from a really nice windows Zen book to the M1 Max MBP for work, and I have to say I think I'm gonna permanently transition. The machine and the software is just a whole package after several OS updates, and I find myself actually enjoying using my machine rather than using it as a tool. I'm still sticking to Windows for my gaming needs, though.

If you have a good internet-connection and don't play games who need an incredible low latency (competitive shooters for example), then you could think about game-streaming. Blade Shadow for example is the most comfortable Windows Gaming PC in the cloud where you can work and play with. For my needs, it made a second machine unnecessary. And if you just need not so power-hungry Windows applications you don't want to stream over the cloud, then you can buy Parallels which also does a great job currently with Windows 11 on ARM (Windows 11 ARM can emulate most x64 applications too).

I agree with you Michael. I really hesitated to replace my 2019 MBP - as I'd had the nightmare of every version of the 2016 to 2019 models, all failed to be reliable, I visited the Apple store just too many times to make sense, I had so many replacements of my computer, and the entire reason I switched to Apple was lost, a failure, and I was pretty disappointed - especially given how much I'd spent. So I just held off buying the M1 Max MBP - especially as it did mean having to give up virtual machines (which I've ended up fixing by having a Windows workstation in the office, and remote desktoping to it for all my virtual machine tasks, not perfect, but liveable). However, that aside, the M1 MBP is amazing. I've finally got battery life (I just gave up using the old ones on battery as if I got 1h 30m from it, I'd consider that a "really good day"), and the thing is so quiet - no more fans screaming at max all day every day - which it did even without virtual machines running so a like for like is possible. I do miss the touchbar for things like my screenshots preferences and i wish Apple had incorporated it as well as restoring a proper F key row... but that aside, this is the boring computer I wanted and that is what makes it perfect.

Bought the M1 Macbook Pro around 18 months ago. It's easily the best laptop I have ever owned. For me, a laptop has five key components - Screen, Performance, Inputs (keyboard+trackpad), Battery life, and Design/Build quality. The M1 MBP offers an excellent balance of all these five components. The only drawback is the lack of port selection, which means I need to have a dongle always handy.

This video is so good! Wonderful as always Captain2Phones. The look of this laptop may be boring in comparison to some others but the build quality seems like its always gonna be great. Eventually i'm going to be able to buy a true laptop again (to replace my Pixelbook Go that I bought solely for writing. The keyboard is just so so good.) and i'm torn between this macbook for future content creation and waiting to see how the newest generation of Razer laptops will turn out. I'm hoping they'll have the new 12th gen intel cpus or at least make a bigger better AMD model.

I hate the notch and I currently have a 16" macbook pro intel version but I only have it because of the size. I would love a notchless 16" macbook air! I hope one is coming soon!

Hey Michael….As we say in the law, you are a joy to watch procedurally and substantively….Thank you for that. I do have a question when/if you get a minute. I only own Macs, including the 16 you just reviewed, BUT I need bloody a windows computer to be able to download huge amounts of certain evidence I receive from prosecutor //law enforcement for my criminal cases. I have a Lenovo yoga which I hate and have done mad research on practically everything out there. I would be thrilled to hear any advice you might have on what might be a good windows fit for me. Thanks and regards, Kate

To each their own. I will admit, it is a sleek and sharp looking design, but... I can't see myself ever really wanting one. Then again, I'm somewhat already using my dream laptop. Yes, it's bulky, and the screen is small, and it really struggles to play games with the integrated Intel HD Graphics 5500 iGPU built in to the i5-5300U, but I love my Panasonic Toughbook CF-31. Web browsing and watching KZfaq, I can get 8 hours out of the battery consistently. Yeah, the screen is 1024x768, but... I don't mind. The thing it's done for me is to force me to "clutter down" when I'm using it. Instead of having a dozen applications running and trying to figure out why the laptop is running slow, I'm more aware of what I'm doing and the end result is that I actually _close_ programs I don't need open. Again, I'm not Apple bashing here. I may not generally like them as a company, but I will admit, they do make some nice looking devices. And, I'll give them credit for their M1 chips being quite fast. Hell, if they make one of those a decent bit thicker (I don't like thin-and-light designs myself, I always feel like I'm going to break the damn things), make it water resistant, capable of surviving at least a three foot drop, and still have the impressive battery life, I _might_ consider one in the future. And from someone who, 5 years ago, wouldn't have even considered a MacBook at all, that's the highest praise I can give it. And yes, I do draw the line at water resistance. Life happens. Laptops should _not_ die because you spilled water/tea/coffee on the keyboard deck.

Stop being so practical. Gosh. That was sarcasm, by the way. I have never understood being a fan of one company or another. I have always said the same thing this video does: use the right tool for the job. I'll never understand the fan boy flame wars. Why would you ever game on anything but a PC and why would you ever create content on anything but a Mac? It's not about one being better than the other at everything. It's definitely not about being a fan of a company and defending them to the death. It's about using the right tool for the job. This is why this channel is one of my favorites for tech reviews. The reviews are always founded in unbiased practically. They also have the added bonuses of being well written and looking and sounding great.

8:07 "And if it ever stops doing that, well, fixing that problem is just a trip to the Apple store away. Much better than mailing it out to some far away repair center for a few weeks." This could be interpreted in several ways, but Macbooks internally get mailed to a service center that works with them anyway. Some Apple stores don't have the parts or training to work on them, and the turnaround times will be several weeks in some cases if they order parts in. If self-repair was an option, you could take it to someone who could fix it faster if all that's required is a board repair. That is, unless you're paying to get a new machine on the spot because your stuff is already backed up elsewhere. Which is expensive. But it is a tool for work, so your priorities are different. Official turnaround times in my country are 10 working days at a minimum. Any delay stretches that into a third week, and any uncommon parts take over a month to arrive. And that's from an Apple store.
