Hi, I'm Steve, and I run the Abandon't channel. Here, we explore old things that people tend to have forgotten about. In this video, we stay in Macclesfield and we look for what is left of the old Gas Road that was obliterated by the construction of a bypass.

Interesting video but I think you're slightly off with what you think is Gas Road! As someone who grew up in Macclesfield and spent half my life there, including well before the Silk Road ( North South relief road) was built in the late 1980s. I remember Gas Road with affection as I commuted along there daily and almost met my maker as some fancy Limo with the distinctive 'A1' plate, nearly piled into me coming down Hibel Road and hurtled around the roundabout just missing me, I had to brake sharply, then it went off down Gas Road, which was a short connecting road between the roundabout on Hibel Road and joined the roundabout at the bottom of Buxton Road (Waters Green area) It followed the River Bollin which was down to one side in a brick culvert and went under the Railway. In fact in your video you were on Gas Road looking over the wall into the Bollin Culvert @ 1:09 then later at 1:29 you can see the stone arch of the Bollin Culvert where it goes under the railway and just to the right that green railway bridge, the Road underneath is Gas Road. Then I'm fairly sure the Silk Road intersects where Gas Road would have joined Hibel Road. That grassy path you followed with the tents at the end looks to me like where the lorry park used to be adjacent to Gas Road and the roundabout behind a high brick wall, which looked to be the remains of an old building, as it had bricked up window openings, maybe the old Gas Works? I also remember the Tescos being built on an old coal yard which I believe used to be railway sidings or a goods yard and they had to reroute part of the Bollin around the Tesco carpark, quite a major job, lots and lots of roadworks! Also the top of Hibel Road was a T junction, where it joined Jordangate / Beech Lane, opposite there used to be a garage, which was demolished to make way for that Road that joins Hibel Road up to Churchill way roundabout. I remember the Silk Road was always a very contentious subject, many wanted it but nobody wanted it cutting through their area. There were several plans proposed, some to the west of the town, some to the east, nobody wanted it cutting through their area, so... In the end they built it almost right through the middle of the town. I also remember the old row of shops that had to be demolished along where the Silk Road met London Road. There was a motorbike shop called Redline motorcycles which eventually moved up towards Macc Town FC. There was also an old crockery shop which the locals nicknamed 'cat pee' corner, well if you ever want in you'd understand why?

Wow, epic comment! Fascinating to learn that I was slightly off on location but in the end I learned something. I'm going to pin your comment for the rest of the good folk who want to learn even more Thanks for the insight!

@@Abandont Cheers for that, I remember vividly as you go down Gas Road from Hibel Road just as you pass under the railway bridge that stone stairway opening to the right, so it all fits in. There was a fishing tackle shop on the right just after the railway bridge, my friend used to work in, I bought a load of top spec fishing gear off him.very cheap when he emigrated to Australia. Happy memories of living and working in that area.👍

The garage you mentioned at the top of Hibel road was called Bailys if I remember right. Also half way up Hibel road was a row of houses on the left . Macclesfield had two railway stations at one time and Hibel road railway station was one of them .There was also a train turn table there, I remember seeing it use from the end of the platform. I remember going to the gas works to get some coke for our fire with my father.

Yes it was so very notorious, because the high sided Lorries couldn't use Gas Road because of it's low height bridge, always went via Brook Street Union Road & Fence Avenue, same with the Double Deckers Buses. The junction of Gas Road & Buxton Road was so bad to cross the road because of the large amount of traffic on Gas Road & Buxton.

Should have explained that the Arighi Bianchi building is of interest because of its wrought iron construction. And the Silk Road didn’t show up until the 80s, not the 60s.

Yeah I realised I got the dates mixed up on closure of the railway and construction of the road. I'm tempted to do a video just on Arighi but it's not Abandoned so... Who knows, maybe a special in future?

I used to live on Canterbury Court, Victoria Park Flats between August 1970 & November 1972, it an area I knew so very well I did enjoyed the video of Gas Road in Macclesfield, & you was on the right spot where Gas Road was, I now live in St Helens in Merseyside since 1972, There used to be a Cattle Market on Commercial Road that was just across Arighi Bianchi.

Remember it in the 70's..the brickwork on the right at 4:30 looks familiar as belonging to Gas Road.

I watched this and compared it to my installation of Google Earth Pro. On that you can actually see gas road in 1945 and pin markers on it then go forward in time right to 2021 and see very accurately where it was in a modern context.
