Become a Channel Member! / @masonoutdoors_masonle... 243 Winchester Deer Season XP 95 grain Extreme Point ammo ballistics gel test fired from a Winchester Model 70 Featherweight Compact with 20 inch barrel.
Range gear: masonoutdoors.com
Leather gear: www.masonleath...
All shots are fired from a distance of 100 yards so as to encompass the majority of common real world hunting scenarios.
I will be shooting into 10% ballistics gel from www.clearballi... that has been calibrated to meet the FBI ballistics testing protocol.
While ballistics gel isn’t an exact proxy for big game, small game, predators or defensive situations, it does provide a repeatable medium through which to test various bullets and ammunitions against each other.
With each type of ammo tested I collect data on bullet penetration depth, bullet weight retention, bullet expansion and muzzle velocity.
For reference, bullet expansion is measured at the widest expanded point using a calibrated Frankford Arsenal Digital Caliper.
Bullet weight is measured using a calibrated Frankford Arsenal Digital Scale after having removed as much ballistics gel as possible from the expanded bullets.
Bullet velocity is measured using a ProChronoPal chronograph set approximately 7’ from the shooting bench.
I am fully aware that a chronograph measuring bullet velocity from 7’ away from the muzzle is going to register a slower velocity than if velocity were measured directly at the muzzle, but that difference is going to be so small as to be all but irrelevant in regards to comparison of actual measured velocity versus factory stated velocity.
My goal with these ballistics gel tests is to provide hunters like you and I with the most objective information possible to help us make the best choice for our particular hunting situation.
The results of these tests are my own and I cannot guarantee the same or similar performance on your part. The views and opinions expressed in this video are solely my own.
All videos are filmed in a safe and controlled environment on a private range with all applicable safety precautions by a trained professional.

Excellent video as always. I have used the XP both 350 Legend and my 243.; In both cases I did harvest a deer. My issue is passthrough. I had no passthrough in either Caliber. No bloodtrail. That is concerning if we had a runner. Recovery could be an issue. I've gone to simple cup and core S&B 100gr ammo in 243 and 180gr winch for 350 Legend. Great passthrough. If you are concerned about passthrough I'm not sure this ammo is for you. The deer were under 20yds away in both cases in hardwoods so they were easy finds.

This one sure has plenty of speed behind it. I'm not totally sure about that shallow penetration. Broadside classic shot probably. Quartering not so sure. That rapid expansion theory with it's shallow penetration still has issues in my mind.

I've a box of those bullets and because of the tip doesn't become misshapen they are accurate on 3or 4 shot groups making a two hole so tight it looks like figure 8. I believe the pointed lead tip that becomes misshapen from loading and unloading flys a little inaccurate .

The Hornady 95 grain SST 243 goes 3,200 ft/s out of a 26 inch barrel, and the 75 grain V-max goes 3,600 ft/s! Both carry around the same amount of muzzle energy

This bullet will perform better on medium game at longer ranges than short ranges. Short range, the velocity is too high for the bullet so it breaks up and ruins a lot of meat. However that frangibility makes it a good varmint bullet.

No exit hole on buck at 100 yds. But i never saw anything like what came out of entrance hole. About 4 ft of blood spray flying out of entrance hole. Ruger compact 243 18 inch barrel.

I would like to know the results from the new design boxes I recently got a new box and noticed the new box drops more at 200 yards than the old design boxes like you have. I have 1 inch difference in height at 100 yards shooting back and fourth new to old.

Don't like this load as it tends to have an ability to blow up in game if to close. My Dad lost a doe with his .308 at 60 yards and my brother lost a huge buck at 30 yards with his 30/06. The buck was killed later in the day by a neighbor and we could see that the bullet blew up on impact of the shoulder blade and never penetrated the chest cavity.

One word of caution. My 35 whelen 200 grain Winchester Power Point was a complete failure. 4 failure to fire and 1 bullet so loose in the brass it was unsafe to shoot. When that buck of a lifetime steps out, don't make the same mistake i made. Make good ammo choices, Winchester is cheap, unreliable ammo in my experience with it.

What is the average barrel life of the 243?
@adamshaw8214
@adamshaw8214 8 ай бұрын
It's respectable. Not as much as a 308 for example. You can get a lifetime out of it if you don't shoot to fast and let the barrel cool between shots. Not an overbore cartridge.
@callum1465
@callum1465 8 ай бұрын
Assuming you don’t shoot super hot reloads, don’t let your barrel get super hot and take breaks in between groups, you should be able to get 1500-2000 rounds before accuracy starts dropping off.

The 257 is great just like the old 250 Savage, It is a shame that they have lost popularity. Myself, I had a 243 Winchester as a kid, but it is sad to see some of the old cartridges fade away. With modern powders they can be loaded way better than back in the day!

Gun and ammo makers messed around with .250 Savage, .257 Roberts and 6mm Remington long enough to ruin all 3 in the market place for a few decades. They handed that niche off to .243 by default.
