I would like to share my tip about veering off of the ruler. I find that when I'm free-motion quilting without rulers, it helps me to think about where I'm going and look ahead. When I am using rulers, if I look ahead where I'm going, I often veer off in that direction instead of keeping my foot next to the ruler. It helps to remember to keep my eyes on the foot next to the ruler, not anticipating where I'm going. I hope that makes sense and may help others.

Another tip for dealing with thread breakage is to increase the size of your needle (after trying rethreading, of course). Sometimes you just need a little larger eye especially if you're quilting with metallic thread. I have no breakage if I use a size 100 needle. Hope this helps.

I used to do that, but then I found Cat tongue grips. I cut them in small squares and rectangles and place them where I press on the ruler. As a domestic ruler quilter, it helps me move the quilt sandwich and keeps the ruler from slipping. I bought the clear tape, but now they also have the clear strips (smaller amount for cheaper price; same price per inch) cattonguegrips.com/collections/cattongue-grips-non-abrasive-grip-tape/products/grip-strips

When you were talking about how to adjust the ruler foot so that it was tight or loose enough, I read or heard somewhere that you can use either a dime or a nickel underneath the ruler foot to adjust the proper height. I haven't had a problem with mine but I have a nickel and a dime handy in case I need them. Midge

If your thread is shredding on your longarm. Try a needle that is one size larger. It may also help if you turn the eye of the needle a hair to the right.
@lw7967
@lw7967 3 жыл бұрын
Skipped stitches can also be a tension issue. I had to back off my tension because you are going in different directions while FMQ so the thread sometimes does not get caught by the rotary hook underneath. if the thread doesn't catch that skips a stitch. You will have to put the tension back for regular sewing. Anyway, that is what worked for me!

I'm left handed and very left hand dominant. But, when using a rotary cutter and doing ruler work, I'm able to use either hand efficiently. Go figure. Discovered the ruler bit accidently when I couldn't see where I was going around the shank of the foot (Bernina 770). Now, of course, I've stopped trying to push the limit of how far ahead I can push the ruler. Your advice to keep between your thumb and finger tip and to put down pressure on the ruler has eliminated some problems I've had. Very much enjoy rulers and free motion work. Thanks for all your wonderful videos. :D

I have a long arm - first time I've used it. What is the best way to load it? Will we be starting at an end of the fabric or in the middle? There are so many ways to load the long arm - what do you feel is the best for using rulers?l I am so excited as this is class has motivated me to actually use my machine. I bought it 6 years ago - yes 6 years - kind of a sympathy gift to myself after my husband passed on. I think it is time to use it!
@joyabbott9031
@joyabbott9031 3 жыл бұрын
When I first purchased my longarm I printed the manual and had Angela's first book side by side and studied them to figure all that out. I took notes, wrote on the loading panels, made lists and finally got going. I have had my longarm 10 years, bought as a sympathy gift when my sister passed on with money she left me in her will. I hardly used it for 8 years while I was still working, I even had one quilt loaded for 2 years! My cat loved it, thought it was a hammock! LOL Since the Covid, I have retired and two things I have been doing to get better is watching the UTube videos from the longarm manufacturer on maintenance and use; and also volunteering to quilt charity quilts for my Guild. I am using her books working through from easiest to harder on the charity quilts, which are for children and are usually pretty small (40'' x 40'' or so). Good luck and have fun!👍😊

@Rhodeygirl
@Rhodeygirl 3 жыл бұрын
I really want to discuss this whole 'don't use cutting rulers as a quilting ruler' thing. I think this conversation really needs some level setting. I think it depends heavily on what 'cutting ruler' you are using and whether your machine is high shank or low shank. So, if you have a low shank machine, like I do, we're being told the 'domestic machine' sized quilting rulers at 1/4 inch (6.125mm) are *too thick* but then also told the rotary cutting rulers are *too thin*. Here's the but -- my cutting rulers are all different widths, and some of them are the exact width that the 'low shank' quilting ruler Taj is being produced at. [Angela - you need to fix the description of the other two rulers, they still say they are for high shank machines and at a 1/4 even though the title of the page says low shank]. So ... if my Missouri Star Quilt Company 2.5 inch by 8 inch cutting ruler is 3.08 mm thick - how does that make it that different from the low shank Taj at 3.175 mm (1/8 inch) thick? The Strip Tube ruler is thicker than LS Taj will be, so that certainly should work. I would agree that the Binding Tool and Hexie Thing measurements appear to be too skinny for this purpose. Is there something else special about these quilting rulers? Maybe add some grip tape to them? Is the concern about flexing? Because only the Hexie Thing had any give. Digital Caliper results for various rotary cutting rulers (just what was in my collection): Cozy Quilt Designs Strip Tube Ruler = 3.5mm Missouri Star Quilt Company 2.5 inch by 8 inch ruler - 3.08mm The Binding Tool - 2.88 mm You Hexie Thing - 2.38mm Cabin in the Woods nested petals - 5.55mm Why am I going to this length? Because $30 a pop for each ruler is a bit much for starting out. And low shank machine options are severely limited from the research I've done. If I can save $30 by using my Strip Tube Ruler that's $30 I can allocate to a curved one.
