I've been using MT3 collets on my Logan lathe for about a year and a half. I made a draw bar very much like yours. It works great, with the noted limitations. I'm saving up for a 5C collet adapter chuck, but even that will be limited by the ID of my spindle. It will work good for larger diameter stock as long as the pieces are short. I have not looked into ER40 collet chucks, but now I will. Great video. Thank you!

Another great video! I made an adapter for my Sheldon lathe to use Hendey #3 collets that I bought cheap. I had to make the draw tube and thread it internally for the collet and externally for the hand wheel. I have since traded for a 5C adapter and collets but had to make another draw tube. I like the idea of ER collets for a lathe but haven't used them so there could be drawbacks.

I recently made an ER40 collet chuck for my Myford lathe, up to that point I had been using MT2 collets in the headstock which was very limiting. I found the ER series very easy to use and very cheap. I have been very pleased with the upgrade and I can hold up to 30mm stock very accurately.
@mrpete2229 жыл бұрын
Thanks--where do you get those collets?
@caskwith9 жыл бұрын
mrpete222 I am in the UK so I bought mine from a local supplier, I have a 28pc set which covers 3mm-30mm, the collets have a 1mm clamping range which is very useful if you use odd sized stock like I do. The price was £180 for the set which I thought very reasonable, just slightly less than your $10 each I think. You can buy them individually as well. Check ebay for a good deals, the chinese made collets are pretty good quality I have found, with my (partially) homemade chuck I have runout of 2 thou or less, each collet will vary slightly. I think they would be a good choice for you and not require too much more work, certainly nothing not in your incredible skill set, might make a nice project video too. Anyway worth a look and thank you for all the great content, I am an avid viewer.

I recently did the same. I was making MT3 collets for common mill sizes but I really wanted feed through for rod stock. I chose an ER40 kit for for the same reasons as you. I liked them so much that I bought spare holders and made a bolt-on version for my lathe. Easily one of my best and most used accessory. I started with an MT3 kit off eBay for around $160 then extra holders from Tools4cheap at $25 each. All run within a thousandth with nut and wrench? No cussing and Dykem mess? No missing eyebrows from homestyle heat treating? $25 any size? DUH. I love making things but it would take me a week to make one true running holder on my machine and I'd have a pile of discards.
@littlestworkshop9 жыл бұрын
I really like ER collets, such a good grip and you always have the right size.
@jossfitzsimons9 жыл бұрын
I have done the same but using ER 32 COLLETS AND MT3 adaptor. These can be bought cheaply from ctc tools. The ER collets are superior in a number of ways. Each collet has a wider clamping range so that every possible diameter from 2mm to 20 is covered. Also when tightened the part is not drawn back towards the chuck to the same extent. The clamping grip is greater too as they have a double taper and 8 slots rather than three. If you choose u can go up to 30mm material by choosing ER 50 collets at a greater cost. Well worth looking at the ER system. On the drawbar end I put a round plastic knob of about 2" dia so no spanner is needed. I have used it for three years now and I use these collets for work holding more often than the big chucks combined. They are a lot safer too. I hold milling cutters in them regularly when using a milling slide. Clearly I'm a fan of the ER system.

Thanks--I will check it out.

+Joss Fitzsimons I've just taken the ER plunge--Going with the ER40s. Bought some collet blocks from arceurotrade, an MT3 adapter for the lathe, an R8 adapter for the mill, and a 15-piece collet set running from 1/8-inch to 1-inch. Trying to make them my do-all system. Still waiting on the mailman for some of the pieces of the kit. We'll see how it all works out.

That's a pretty nice way to get accurate holding (centering) for round stock. I have the same (or very similar) Clausing 5914 lathe. It came with a Royal 5C holder, which I like a lot. If you ever find a Royal or similar closer, let me know, as I might have a spare 5C adaptor. I didn't have an adaptor like you have for the 4 1/2 to MT3, so I made a taper attachment for the lathe and after many adjustment passes, I came up with a nice end product.

What's the point of pinning the coupling nut? Don't you need something to tighten against the outboard side spindle adapter? Or did you cut the all-thread at precisely the right length so taking up just those few threads in the collet snugs it up?

I might talk nonsense but, wouldn't it be possible to take an adapter, cut it short so the last say 1 to 2 cm of the collet be exposed and on to it a thread be made for a cup that will become the draw bar? The cup would have to remain inside the machine somehow locked, i wouldn't know how to be honest but the rotation for the tightening would have to be made from the work side instead of the gear side. It just crossed my mind so it's nothing i've ever seen before. Might be complete nonsense. edit: the outcome would be that the inside of the collet would be free to use a full piece of stock as opposed to the smaller variant presented here. I would also like to add that all the machining can be done on a lathe. It's basically cutting, facing and threading.
