This is an outstanding series of lectures that takes me back to my first shop classes in the 60s! My Dad graduated from a trade high school in Brooklyn as a machinist, went to work for Grumman and was transferred to Houston during Apollo. I am going through gunsmith school now and it's expensive. Why did we 'dumb down' high schools and eliminate shop classes?

Hello Tubalcain Thank You for all Your lovely Videos! I must say, it's hard to read a micrometer in imperial style! And Your question about the thread in continetal micrometers: It has a pitch of 0.5mm.

@colleenliberty Thanks for the little history lesson. I knew it was an old one--there are no markings on it.

I don't think anyone commented this, so i checked my metric micrometer. It moves 0.5 mm each turn, so I guess that's the thread pitch. Not sure if that's standard, but it's likely. It's also just around 13% smaller than 40/inch.

There are some micrometers with 1mm pitch (older ones)

When you get a micrometer where that the spindle is frozen how to you break it loose? I got one on EBay that looks nice but the spindle is frozen. I have used penetrating oil and disassembled as much as possible but haven't been able to free the spindle yet.

I use a piece of paper to clean the mic by clamping it between the anvils and pulling it threw. Use very light pressure .

Wow, I'm such an asshole. I bought a 1-2 inch micrometer and I thought the thing would measure from 0 - 2 inches.... *facepalm* Hopefully they will take it back. I was looking all over to see what this "standard" was, know I know.... Thanks Cain. Just got my machining certificate... yah I have no clue.

If the micrometer is calibrated and known to be well more accurate than the resolution, of course it's doable. And of course the salesman is going to disagree. But if your tolerances are tighter than the resolution it's a bit shady already

I ALWAYS clean the Anvils on a 0-1" or 0-25 mm by closing them on a piece of clean paper & dragging the Mic' through it. Then check the "ZERO" on a day to day basis. It's surprising how one can be half a thou' out otherwise!!

Some micrometers have a threaded anvil, that can be screwed in and out, to zero the micrometer.

As an Inspector of some 35 yr's + experience I shouldn't be saying this (I'm also a time served turner) The Ratchet (allegedly) gives everyone the same "Feel" But I still believe the old adage that "When It Squeaks - It's Size" (don't tell anybody else I said that!!!!!)
