Complete restoration of a rare and very rusty brush cutting mower engine. It's a Briggs and Stratton model 14 which produces 5 horsepower. Can I rescue it to a perfect running condition?

Fantastic rebuild, and what a piece of machinery! The engine reminds me of the 5 hp Briggs we had on the back of our AMF riding mower in the late 60’s early 70’s. It ran for years until one day Dad forgot to check the oil, ran it dry and it seized up. I took the engine off and rebuilt it for him, it ran for another dozen or so years before we gave the mower away. You could buy all of those parts at the local mower shop back then!

Nice video! About 10 years ago my father brought me a Tecumseh LAV35 from our neighbor. I spent a lot of afternoons to restore it after school. I did almost everything you do in the video. Unfortunately the piston-ring replacement was not enought to avoid oil consume of the engine. After 4 years of using it the 45 years old lawn mower has been retired. Now it is a "statue" in my workshop. A lot of memories.

Look up Terrell fixes all. He is very good at what he does and he explains everything all the way through. Bear in mind he's a little goofy but funny but very good at what he does. I think he's been doing this for 40 couple years working on small engines. And that's not all he does he works on tractors mini bikes etc. If you can get past his goofiness like I did he is very very entertaining and very informational. It's called Terrell fixes all and look up Terrell fixes all skits. You may enjoy it. 👍👍👍👍 God bless you.😊

I never thought I'd be so happy watching a video of someone mowing the lawn. I want that lawnmower (or that type). No bog down cutting thick grass. I lost my favorite mower as a kid (one of those scary reel-to-reel 5hp craftsman) when the fuel hose got ripped of at the same time as the spark plug. Wish I could find another... burnt it all up

Good job I never had the ring compressor , always used a big hose clamp . Good job on the restoration , anymore those major jobs have turned in a disposable mowers because of the labor cost . I restored a. Old 3 1/2 Briggs push mower one time and put chrome rings in , sold it for it was 25 years old ( it was still running good when I sold it ) and bought a new one . But the old stuff was easy to work on - thanks for the reminiscing session .

Wow ! This is a true tlc restoration! New rings, new conrod, new sump! When you took the head off it was so clean. Sludge in sump appears to be lead from the leaded fuel days. This engine was already built to handle unleaded fuel with such good valves. Only thing viewers would probably miss is a compression test before and after.

Growing up around old school hot rod guys, I learned a bunch if stuff so I figured I could pass it along to anyone who wants it. At about 18 minutes in he used that permatex assembly lube, which is good for bearing and seal surfaces, but at 19:30 he coated the cylinder wall with it which is wrong. Engine oil or assembly lube will make it harder for the rings to seat, I was told to use wd-40 or something equivalent. Also always coat both surfaces when putting bearing surfaces together (ex. Coat the pin bore in the piston and wrist pin its self not just one or the other) or it will leave some dry spots on the surface. Greatly enjoy the videos man and I also understand that engine building is a talent and most of us have different talents.

I wonder why he didn't hone the cylinder. I believe that is always recommended when installing new rings as it allows them to seat in well.
@erikj.2066
@erikj.2066 3 жыл бұрын
It's an aluminum bore engine. Depending on the type of rings he used, it's usually wasn't advisable to hone an aluminum bore as the hone will leave grit behind imbedded in the cylinder walls, which is difficult to remove. EDIT: Watched further into the video, and appears the NOS rings he used were plated, just like the piston should be. You don't hone for those.
@jamesg9385
@jamesg9385 3 жыл бұрын
A very light cross hatch with a fine stone should have been used to help remove an scores down the length of the bore. a second clean would have had to be done, but the rings stiil need a surface to mate to. it's the only part of the video that I questioned. Extra care would have had to be taken due to the aluminium block, but done nonetheless.
@scdevon

You aren't supposed to hone a "Kool Bore" aluminum bore. Your bore is either OK or it isn't.
