Interesting idea: Machine golf ball style dimples in to the major surfaces (proportional sized). A golfball has the dimples to optimize airflow and reduce drag, producing mini vorticies creating a virtual air ball-bearing. It would be very interesting to see the difference in spin times between a simple top and a dimpled top.
@charmio
@charmio 2 жыл бұрын
I’d also be interested to see this tested but I doubt it will work: It’s spinning, not travelling straight through air. The ball needs to push air out of its way while a spinning top wants to minimise its interaction with air altogether. Because it’s rotating it will be flinging air outwards; There will be air coming in from the top and bottom and being thrown out horizontally. In essence it will be acting as an inefficient and unconfined centrifugal pump. I suspect vortices will not be able to form in the airflow from this because they will also be thrown away from the spinning top (because it’s rotating any air trapped in a vortex would have to accelerate around with the top to stay in place).

The cause of the drag here (friction) is different than with an object displacing fluid (pressure due to detached flow), so the effect would be the opposite: increased friction (and total) drag.

These machine's are actually pretty slow for production standards tho. We have dozen's of german production lathe's wich are alot faster then this. We make this part in less then half the time. The machine's have 2-3 turrets working on the same part at once. All having to be synchronised and with rapids even faster. Ofcoure they are not made for making just 1 part...

The man Travis! At first I had so many questions, but then I thought "this guy is about quality, he knows what's up." Love me some synchronized spindle action 😁 Through a little research, Kennametal's Beyond Evolution Grooving/Cut-Off tooling series functions as a multi-directional turning tool. The triple V seated design enhances functional stability and minimizes vibration; while the top and bottom V support, increases rigidity and dimensional accuracy. Looks like the insert itself is a 180 degree cutting angle. I'm assuming you used the cut-off blade with a 0 degree lead angle. For those who are unaware, could you explain when it would be most appropriate to use the cut-off blade with the 6 degree lead angle verses the 0 degree lead angle?
@travisjarrett2355
@travisjarrett2355 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Sara, correct on all counts. Appreciate you providing that info. As for an angled lead in, you would usually use this if you are looking to reduce the pip (small diameter protrusion left on the part) or trying to reduce burrs on thin walled parts. To do this the angled end of the insert that sticks out the furthest towards X0 is positioned nearest the part you are removing from the bar. Depending on need several different lead in angles are available but you should remember there are always trade offs. For example surface finish and tool life tend to be reduced with an angled lead in.

@@travisjarrett2355 Travis, quick question, the tools on the website for the $99 promo, are blade parting type tools. Are they used for side turning aswell? The tool in the video appears to be a modular grooving tool. Not the same parting blade in the store.

@saram9590 2 жыл бұрын
@@archmachinecompany Great question! I took it upon myself to look into this. You'll see me floating around the KZfaq comments. I'm a moderator for Titan's Facebook group..not that I'm some weird person that chimes in just because. LoL You're correct that the tool used in the video is a modular cutting unit. The modular cutting units are not part of the $99 promo. Just the cut-off blades are part of the promo. The modular cutting unit is rated for both turn and groove applications. The cut-off blade that's part of the $99 promo is only rated for deep groove and cut-off applications. Hope this helps!
