The company i work for purchased a Climax portable lineboring system about a year ago. Nice machine. Paid for itself in no time. I operate a horizontal boring mill and had an 8 foot boring bar made up with square holes every 7 inches apart to hold a cutter. We bought some pillow block bearings and made up some other supports out of angle iron. Now i can line bore nicely . You're right. You can spend many thousands or get a little creative and come up with something just fine. Sometimes theres money in a job to justify the expense. And sometimes business is slow and you can experiment a little. Cheers from Canada.

At the shop where i work, we have huge Gantry mills, about 5 meters by 8 meters table size. The mills and the parts we make on them are physically to big for liquid cooling, it'd get stuck in small cavities, cause rust, fires, and smell up the place. So they are cooled exclusively with compressed air, cutting both easy cutting stuff, like cast, but also tool steels and things of that nature. The only cutting fluid they use is dark cutting oil, they have it in watering cans like you use in a garden, they only use it when drilling deep holes into castings

Just looked up the sds and sure enough, it has sulfur in it. It’s also really thin and creeps in when using it. It’s around $200 for 12 16oz cans, just found a place selling 5 gallon pails for $200, where other places are $350+. I don’t need it right now, but 100% buying it before it’s not available.

I started using ordinary canola oil for cutting. It is not healthy for human consumption, but environmentally friendly and seems to work for me in machining. It is inexpensive and when it smokes it smells like food fryer. Thanks to all the additives it never goes rancid and nothing grows on it. Built up cleans off easily with isopropyl alcohol or detergents, doesn’t interfere with welding. Worth trying.

So as a question out of curiosity. What is the difference between cutting oils and honing oils? Furthermore has the need for lapping become something that is far more specialized?
@rok14758 ай бұрын
„The term "lapping" is used to describe a number of various surface finishing operations where loose abrasive powders are used as the grinding agent at normally low speeds. It is a process reserved for products that demand very tight tolerances of flatness, parallelism, thickness or finish.” So the lapping oil/fluid/compound is in fact a liquid or paste abrasive that grinds the surface. There is no cutter involved in lapping operation, the tools used for lapping push the abrasive suspended in the carrier substance to remove material. The cutting oil on the other hand is a lubricant that reduces friction between the cutter and the workpiece.

I never figured out which chemical it was coming from. Then the EPA banned it and I had to get it disposed of (properly). My headaches went away.
