I bought a bargain Neslein machinist wooden tool chest and restored it back to its former glory!
I managed to get it on eBay for only £35, it was about an hour drive to collect and needed quite a lot of work but it was worth it because they’re usually £200!
I sanded down all of the wooden draws, kept the original Neslein brand badge, wire brushed the metal components, remade the leather handle, recovered the draws inside with grey fabric and hand cut a new key for the lock!
The wood was finished with several layers of boiled linseed oil and a top coat of Osmo PollyX oil satin matt.
I could not be more pleased with the outcome!
Let me know what you think of the finished product in the comments below.
Many thanks for watching, please subscribe for more great projects on the way!

Thank you so much, really enjoyed. The most interesting part for me was when you created the key for the box - I am desperate to get a key for my box... I know was not the main purpose of the video, but could you please give me some tips to understand it bit more, or do you have another video I can follow? Many many thanks again!

I have just been rebuilding a few bits on my Father's one of these. He was a tool maker for life. A few things to note. I didn't have a key so I made up a few to test and modify with thin plastic that was easy to cut with a boxcutter. Took a few attempts and trimming to push the tumblers just far enough. My profile ended up being nowhere near as simple as the one here. I would suggest that even though it appears to work its probably wrong (maybe you got lucky the number "12" lock was the simple one mine has a "6" lock) , the tip of the key is quite small as well as it goes right through the back of the lock. Basically only 2 tumblers so was not hard to see what was going on with the lock removed. That plate round the lock (13 minutes in) on the front actually has a rectangular cut-out between the mounting screws. This allow a bit of paper or card trapped behind it so you can write your name on it. Nice picture of a genuine key here:- www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/vintage-neslein-drawer-engineers-1819612816 I'm taking my plastic template to a locksmith to get 2 proper keys cut for it.

I have a similar box with a similar lock. How did you determine the correct spacing of the key to get the lock mechanism to work? I’m on my 5th key attempt, still not working.
@JKLProjects
@JKLProjects 2 жыл бұрын
Hi there, I think I got a little bit lucky with the key. I was playing around with the mechanism to see how it worked and then used a small flat file inside the lock to provide some tension and to my surprise it opened! I think mine is a very basic lock and has no grooves it just needed a piece of flat metal. If I hadn’t got lucky with the file I was going to cut a piece of metal that fit and then just file it down bit by bit until I worked. Sorry I can’t give more information I got quite lucky with it. Also if you look on eBay for similar chests to yours (same brand) etc and ask the sellers if they have pictures of the key or even if they can draw around the key with a pencil and paper and then send you it, you can stick it onto a metal blank and cut it / file it out. I contacted a few and some were happy to help but luckily I didn’t need it in the end. Many thanks, please subscribe for more. JKL.

Three plates inside and 2 of them are the tumblers. The latch bottom is thicker than the other two. You just move up from the bottom that is left full width of the key and then adjust the other 2 cut-outs. Accuracy is required or they move too much or to little for the latch to slide down the slot. There are two springs inside so everything needs to be clean and rust free.

Great restoration! Little bit of advice for future videos that i hope you will take on board and not be offended by not mentioning - Fade to black transitions are too jarring when cutting between shots as frequently as you are doing, please just cut without any transition effects when the cuts are close together.

Hi there, I’m always looking for feedback so thank you for the comment! I have several videos already to go with the fade transitions but I will try the next one without. Many thanks, JKL.

Hello, @06:22 it would be good instead to use a dry lube e.g. silicon based spray. It does not attract dirt.

Hi there, thanks for the comment. Yes usually people put in green felt but I don’t like that as it picks up so much grease and oil. Whilst it might not look like it, this is a good quality fabric from a local haberdashery and a bit more hard wearing than felt. Thanks for the feedback. Please consider subscribing for more!

@@JKLProjects I'm not saying it's a bad thing. Just I would of used contact cement and felt in bottom of the drawers. I kind of have thing for felt Fabric. I have seen some where they put contact paper. I find contact paper dreadful, and it gives out real quick. I did love to see the work you put in to it, It showed me you care about your work and how looks.
