Just simply that “Four Green Fields” was written by Tommie in the 1960’s, it not a traditional song written in the 1860’s. Many fans of the music don’t realize this is a Makem composition. It matters little now, Tommie has been gone so long, and missed.

I notice he is playing a 5 string long neck bluegrass banjo, made popular by the late great Pete Seeger. I always thought Irish folk was 4 string tenor banjo?
@BillyBogart
@BillyBogart 10 жыл бұрын
On one of the Clancy Brother lp's you can see Tommy with a 4 string open back but none of this is really traditional. American vaudevillian performers came to Ireland last century with banjos doing black face performances. The Irish were amused and adopted the banjo. Still note Tommy is capo'ing up. He has a far greater range than Seeger. I think people like Tommy played the long neck because it looked more impressive. Even one of his counterparts Luke Kelly capo'd up on his long neck. I think it's an appearance thing.

Billy Bogart Good to know cheers
@BillyBogart
@BillyBogart 10 жыл бұрын
Malcolm M I'm only theorizing. When you capo up on the 3rd fret I believe it turns back into a regular banjo. I'd suggest the longer scale would feel different too. I'm not a banjo player but for example my acoustic guitar has 14 frets in front of the body and my classical has only 12 and has a much different attack. I know they're different kinds of guitars but just think of Liam Clancy in the early days with the 12 fret Martin. He used to make that top explode with his passionate strumming. I watch a lot of videos with Maken, Kelly, etc and don't recall them not using a capo. Dare I say Kelly used to talk communism quite a bit and Seeger was certainly no stranger to the idea. So maybe it had some kind of symbolic meaning? Vocalwise Seeger sung much lower. That's why he had the long neck invented.
@maltyne1
@maltyne1 10 жыл бұрын
Mmm different tuning. Regular tenor banjo is same as fiddle & mandolin GDAE. 5 Banjo usually 1st string = D 2nd string = B 3rd string = G 4th string = D 5th string = G (small string on the side of the neck) Cheers MAL
