Nice work indeed! I want to make my own one with a Mac Classic II and an Raspberry Pi. Maybe you could help me with the display. Should i go for a 9,7“ iPad display or 8“ (aspect ratio: 4:3). Can you recommend something? Thanks a lot!

hey markus, did you print the screen adapter to for the screen by yourself? I need this for my project too. my macintosh plus is done for a couple of years now but the screen is an issue because you can clearly see that its an lcd :) video is up on my channel aswell

Hi the screen bezel was custom made by RetroAppleAT on Etsy. He can sell you the 3D print design files or he may make more if offered enough $$ or demand

Nice! thank you so much for posting this "making of" video. I have a few questions. Does original plus chassis interfere with the Wi-Fi/Bluetooth reception? On the 2014 mini couldn’t you just swap out the hard drive to bypass the firmware lock? Or is the lock programmed into the firmware somehow? Does your 2018 run hot? I have one and it tends to run pretty warm does it need a additional fan? I like the idea of the monitor being powered by the USB-C hub So does the screen come with the screen adapter? I have a 3D printer and would be interested in purchasing the file for the bezel The paint job looks real nice. Too often when somebody paints an old Mac they don’t look too good but yours is very nice. There is a guy here in Indy that has serveral 2012 i5 Mac minis with 120 SSD drives already installed. He’s asking $ip each for these. He also includes the original 500 gig hard, original box, DVI to HDMI video adapter. Again for $80! I bought 2 for different projects. I would like to have a modern Mac in an old compact Mac housing but I don’t have a donor Mac plus. I have 3 plus’ that work and an SE but they all work.

Thanks so much Bill! Great questions!! I did do testing with the heat - I thought it might overheat as well - with this being the i3 model - everything checked out while running the trial version of iStat menus. I let a HD KZfaq video run for an hour and it never got too hot. Let it run overnight and everything was okay with the temperatures and no extra fans. If this were an i7 mini, some extra ventilation might be needed. Leaving the battery compartment door off could be enough for that, or an area to side-mount a fan. I remembered wrong in my video, and the previous Mac mini was actually a 2012. I looked into the firmware password, and it is only possible to remove it via replacing a physical chip on the board, or modifying the EEPROM of the current one. There are shops that will perform the service or sell the chip, but wasn't interested in fixing it. The screen came with VGA and HDMI inputs. Just used a standard HDMI cable from the USB-C dock. The screen seems commercial with just the consumer plastic casing removed. Thanks - the paint job had proper primer, and was satin. Painted in Acrylic paint as it's much more forgiving for novices. Something like this which is handled often and dinged on a desk should really be enamel paint - but that is much more difficult to paint. The acrylic paint is very soft and easy to disturb, chip, scratch, etc. There are empty cases that come up on eBay every now and then.

How did you manage to make the resolution of the screen fit inside the Mac Plus bezel size? Are you running something like SwitchRes X to change the resolution?

Hi thank you no the screen naitively supports up to 1280 x 1024! Works without anything extra.

Do you have any SKUs or anything to identify the LCD? I've had an empty Mac Plus shell for a decade and now with some lower end core series Mac minis going for less than $80 I got the urge to try this project out again but I'm trying to figure out the best option for the screen.

I'd love to see a similar retro-mod with the guts of an M1 (or M2) Mini. Frankly, I could kick myself...at one time I had "collected" a Mac IIci, a 128k and a (non-functional) Cube. I tossed them or gave them away...........Man, what I could have done with them today, ugh !!

Look, you're not revealing anything very important in this video. That's the name of the LCD model. You've re-used an old device so brilliantly There are some things that people who watch your video already know. The important thing is that You didn't explain what model you used or how you would reduce the size if you used an LCD more than 9 inches.

Hi! Thank you an LCD larger than 9” will not fit. The screen bezel was 3D printed by RetroAppleAT on Etsy and unfortunately I don’t know the model of the screen but it should be a relatively standard 9” LCD taken out of its housing and powered by a USB to powerPIN cable.
