As you build out your video (or audio) editing studio, one important piece is a solid pair of studio monitor speakers.
Up until this week I've just simply edited any video or audio I've produced while wearing over the ear headphones. But there are a few reasons why you wouldn't want to exclusively edit only wearing headphones.
- Not everyone that consumes what you make will be wearing headphones.
- To properly mix the audio you'll want to hear it on different devices/set-ups.
- You'll often have more than one other person at a time watch or listen to what you're working on.
- In this post I'll walk through which speakers you should be looking at buying and if you can't afford them, what headphones to go with in the meantime.
Choosing a Studio Monitor Speaker
Unless you're setting up a professional studio, you should be looking for a good pair of home office studio monitor speakers from $150 to $300.
The three main options I'd recommend in this price range, from cheapest to most expensive are (at the time of writing this):
- M-Audio AV40's ($150)
- Mackie MR5 mk3's ($240)
- Rokit 5 G3's ($299)
I decided on a pair of Mackie MR5 mk3's recently and last weekend I shot a quick unboxing/review for them which you can watch below or on KZfaq.
As for the other two, while I haven't used them personally, John Lee Dumas at Entrepreneur on Fire uses the M-Audio AV40's and Ryan Connolly over at Film Riot uses the Rokit 5 G3's, so I'm sure they can vouch for them.
What you'll hear in these speakers in comparison to the built-in speakers in your laptop/monitor or smaller computer speakers is much more definition in the range of frequencies you hear.
Meaning, your bass and treble response will be much more clearly defined and sound fuller. You'll hear more of what's there.
Choosing Studio Monitor Headphones
Some people choose to edit with headphones, and I do a combination of both now, but there is one main thing to be careful of when editing with consumer headphones.
The main consumer brands (such as Bose, Beats, etc.) all boost the bass and other parts of the frequency spectrum to make music sound "better" in them.
But if you are editing your audio with headphones that don't have a flat Equalization response, you'll assume that your audio sounds better than it actually does.
That's why studio monitor headphones have a completely flat EQ.
Anyway, enough jargon.
Here are four pairs of studio monitor headphones, all from Audio-Technica, that I recommend you get if you're can't quite afford the speakers above (or just need an alternative due to your office or roommate situation). They're in order of cost at the time of writing this.
- Audio-Technica ATH-M20x ($49)
- Audio-Technica ATH-M30x ($69)
- Audio-Technica ATH-M40x ($99)
- Audio-Technica ATH-M50x ($167)
As you move up in price the headphones get larger speaker diaphragms, swivel features, replaceable cords, cases, etc.
If you have a pair of monitor speakers or headphones, I'd love to hear what you think of them in the comments below this post.
Cheers,
Caleb Wojcik

Can anyone offer their opinion/recommendations on whether these or Behringer Truth b2031a would be the best entry monitor? Bearing in mind I've looked at krk's and I believe they're too coloured at the low and high end!

Hey mate, I would recommend moving them a little bit away from the wall also although that might not be an option for you. With rear ported speakers you can get problems with bass refracting off of walls.

Would u recommend this speaker over the CR4 ? i'm looking forward to a More-to-bass speaker , but these will do since i will add sub woofer in the future. Which one would u recommend ?
@CalebWojcik
@CalebWojcik 8 жыл бұрын
These are a bit bigger & have more power + input/output options. Plus more things to tweak on the back. I'd go with these over a CR4.

Another thing to think about down the road is to raise your speakers up to ear level. That way you get the true sound. You can usually DIY stands, but you could always buy stands.

Agreed. For now I'm not doing crazy important mixes, but I tilt them up a bit when I really care.

JC Cruz I haven't used those, but the MR5 are more in the "pro" range. The CR4's seem to be "consumer/multimedia".

Liked your video Caleb Wojcik . Any further updates on the speakers? I've been looking at these the last few days and can only find good comments on them. I don't own a Focusrite yet so I'll be plugging them into the jack just like in your video. Think I'll go ahead and get them from amazon on Friday if your experience so far has been impressive.

I saw that u didn't connect the cable directly into the headphone jack on your Mac. Can I connect it directly to my Mac or the I have to buy that Apple tower u used to connect the headphone jack?
@CalebWojcik

+EdStudios Yes, you could use the RCA outputs on the back of the speakers and run that into a headphone jack.

Hi mate, nice video, I have the MR5 MK2s connected to my laptop via a tri-capture audio interface and wanted your opinion on something. I've been getting a slight hiss/whistling sound (not ground hum) while they're idling. I solved it by turning the input gains on the rear really low (I'm talking 2%). With your ear right next to the speaker you can still hear a hiss (very slight) but from 5 feet away where I sit they're dead silent while they're idling. The trade-off (which is not really a trade-off I guess) is that the maximum volume on my laptop puts the speakers at a decent level for everyday use and producing but I cannot go beyond that if I feel like turning them up just a little bit more every now and then. Was this the best solution?
@CalebWojcik
@CalebWojcik 9 жыл бұрын
I got a similar hiss when I went straight through RCA cables, though not as bad. That's the power of the other balanced options, like the TRS cables that I'm using. Close to zero hiss.
@controllerbrain
@controllerbrain 9 жыл бұрын
Caleb Wojcik I'm using TRS cables as well. I've reduced the hiss to next to nothing, but I've just discovered another issue... The left speaker seems to be a little weaker in volume than the right. I can compensate for that weakness by turning the gain up a little on that speaker. The end result is that I have two speakers with the same volume. This is great, but now each speaker has a different input gain level in order to get that equal volume. Is this common? Thanks for your help - you seem to know your shit so thought I'd pick your brain a little. :)
@CalebWojcik
@CalebWojcik 9 жыл бұрын
I don't think that is very common, so I'm not sure why that is happening to you. As long as it is working I'm sure the way you have it is fine. I'd contact Mackie to see if they say anything different.
@controllerbrain

Caleb Wojcik Yeah, the way I see it, no equipment is perfect, especially budget speakers like these. Sometimes you just have to make do with what you have instead of worrying about every little thing. Cheers.
