Charles Rennie Mackintosh was bitterly disappointed not to have won the architectural commission for the Liverpool Cathedral in 1901. Tbh, I'm not crazy about either design, neither this Mackintosh proposal nor the actualized G.G. Scott edifice.

He did it in a traditional design, (nudge nudge, wink wink) to try and get it past the no clue hierarchy, then he could decorate it to his own unique design, such a shame he didn't get the commission. And YES! it does resemble his design.
