macmost.com/e-3024 You can choose whether the Menu Bar on your Mac is always visible, or will hide when you aren't using it. The setting for this recognizes the difference between using a Desktop space or a Full Screen space, so it is important to understand Mission Control as well.
NOTE: This video was made during macOS Ventura. Today with macOS Sonoma you should look in System Settings, Control Center for these settings.

Note that in macOS Sonoma you should look in System Settings, Control Center for these settings.

I have Macbook Pro m3 with the newest OS (Sonoma 14.4). Here’s how you can keep the menu bar always visible in all workspaces: Launch the Apple menu (🍎) at the top left corner of your screen. Navigate to “System Settings”. Select “Control Center”. Click the dropdown next to “Automatically hide and show the menu bar”. Choose "Never" This should keep your menu bar visible at all times across all workspaces.

I wish there was more granular control. I would like to have the menu bar always visible, except when playing full-screen video. But there's no option for this.

Thanks. Any way to hide the 3 colored buttons as well, I can see that depending on the application, they are embedded on the application screen and if not they hide/show even when menu bar is set to always show.

If you can't see the app's toolbar, you shouldn't be able to see those buttons. But it depends on the app. A third-party app may do it differently.

Thanks. It seems to me that it’s different on a MacBook with a notch because the top of the screen is not used in full screen mode so hiding the menu bar doesn’t make for more space on the screen. I’m a Mac novice though…

Yes, apps will only use the amount of screen they can without a part being blocked out. So they can't use the portion to the left or right of the notch or otherwise you wouldn't be able to see the whole app window.

Hello MACMOST, well I have a problem with my imac for months now it's going crazy or I am. On any browser this huge green search panel comes up (and not menu bar it's above that). I can't remove it and I don't know how. Do you think you know what this might be? I would appreciate any help you can give me! Ty so much!

Not sure what you are asking. Apple TV is an app, so "which Apple TV app is good" doesn't make sense. What are you trying to DO?

@@riqfez5468 Not sure what you are trying to do. Are you taking about the Apple TV box? If you want it to play on another screen, then connect it to that screen. No need to "mirror" it as it is a small box and easily moved.

Do you know a way in OS X or add on app to suppress the menu entirely except on a combination mouseover AND keypress? I have menubar always off but it drives me insane when I am working on the screen near the top, popping the menubar open when I don’t want it. I want something that suppresses both menubar and dock unless I, say, hold ctrl and THEN mouseover the appropriate screen edge. I have looked and not found any way to do this. It seems obvious to me. Or is there a different solution?

I can't think of a way to do that. You have to be pretty far at the top to bring it up so I'm not sure what you are working on that would cause that.

@@macmost The quick access toolbar in Excel or Word on top. Excel row controls on the left. I was pretty sure it wasn’t in OS X. Looking for a third party app… Thank you! Your videos are great! I always learn new things.

@@macmost lol. That’s certainly a solution and I might try it for non-full screen use. At least it’s be less frustrating at the cost of minor clutter. There’s so many amazing apps out there. I was hoping there’d be one for this. Thanks again.

@craigfoster5470 Did you manage to find a solution for this? On the hunt for a fix as playing a game in full screen & occasionally move the mouse to top of screen so the menu bar keeps showing and blocking my view. Very irritating...

There is no menu bar option on Desktop & Dock!!!! I have macOS 14

In macOS Sonoma it is in System Settings, Control Center, near the bottom. Remember, when you can't find things in System Settings, just use the search feature at the top of the left sidebar.

It is never "always" visible in Full Screen mode. If you want that use a regular Desktop space (create one in Mission Control) and simply place the window you want there and size it to fit the whole screen.

If you don't have it installed, it wouldn't be scanning anything. Maybe you are being tricked by a web "ad" or notification from a site? See kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b5h0hZeH3Nm8o4E.html

No matter what i do there is still the black menu bar at the top of my screen when i enter full screen mode, how do i stop it when i amd watching movies or videos in full screen mode, thats when it bothers me the most.

Black menu bar? So are you talking about the menu bar with File, Edit, etc? Or are you talking about a bar of a solid black color? If so, are you using a MacBook?

@@CNative88 Yes to which? Is it a menu bar? Or is it a black bar? If a black bar and you are using a MacBook, that's because you have a "notch" there at the top. If the video was any larger, the top center part wouldn't be visible because of the notch.

Sorry, I wish I could sen you a picture, guess the best way to describe it, is that it’s the top menu bar with the little Apple, all the words and apple icon are white and the background behind them is black.

@@CNative88 OK, so it IS the menu bar, not just blank black space. Then you should be able to set it to hide like I show in the video here. Did you try all of the setting options I showed?

Hey thanks for replying , Just to clarify, I am talking about the toolbar of safari which occupies the space very much as I think. As in safari there is an option to disable always hide toolbar when in full screen. I got that and it works when you open safari in full screen but what I wanted to do is to hide the toolbar even i am operating safari not in full screen. Is there any way to do so ?

@@Learner-lq3vu OK, yes that is the toolbar. This video is about the Menu Bar which is why I assumed that. You can sorta hide the toolbar in Safari with Safari, Settings, Tabs, then select Compact tab layout.

@@macmost The Menu bar Option wasn't there. In my Case it was in the Controllcenter Tab like in the Video I postet in my previous comment. Maybe cause I have the German MacOS Version? Or cause im on Sonoma 14.

Gary, Correction follows: Your "How to hide and show the menu bar on your Mac". Good videos for a newby old guy with a new Mac mini M2 Sonoma. Your instructions do not work for Sonoma.
