Ever wanted to make your own macramé plant hanger? We’ll teach you how to make one in this video using just three types of simple knots including a loop knot, square knot, and half-square knot.
Materials:
• 8 pieces of 15 foot long cotton cord (3.1mm thick)
• 2” brass ring
• 2 pieces of 5 foot cord
Steps:
1. Gather all 8 pieces of cord, fold in half and loop through the ring.
2. Using your 5 foot long piece of string, tie a loop knot right below the ring.
3. Take four strands and tie a square knot. Repeat 6 times.
4. Repeat this pattern with the next group of 4 cords, and repeat for the remaining cords.
5. Leave a 2 ½ inch gap and tie a half square knot.
6. Repeat until you’ve created a 5 inch spiral.
7. Repeat this pattern for the remaining knot groups.
8. Leave a 6 inch gap and create a crossover square knot using the 2 right cords from your first group and the 2 left cords from the adjacent group.
9. Repeat for the remaining knot groups.
10. Leave 6 inch gap and create another crossover square knot by alternating the cords from the previous step.
11. Leave a 3 ½ inch gap and and tie a loop knot.
12. Trim off excess cord to create a tassel finish.
Good luck and have fun!

I just finished my plant hanger following this tutorial and here's what I want to say: To give some insight, I am currently 15, I have never done any Macrame before, I never learned any of these knots before. This is my first time doing this, but I do have some experience of crafts and other DIYs. I followed this tutorial for a crafts class, the total time it took me is 2-3 hours. The tutorial is easy to follow, as it only has one knot; the square knot (of course there's also the loop knot but it's only a start and finish thing). I like that this tutorial is to the point, we don't waste time just watching the whole repetitive process. The way to tie the knot is also shown very clearly, which I appreciate. Of course, as someone who made this for the first time, I still stumble over the knot and made some mistakes here and there. But overall the process is very relaxing; I could see myself making more. But there is something that I would like to point out. This would be the length of the cord. I noticed right away when it's time to tie the end loop knot, there is a LOT of excess cord. The longest of the excess is 5 ft or 150 cm, and the shortest being 2 ft or 60 cm. So I believe that the cord could be shortened from 15 ft to 13 ft. Regardless this would also follow on how far you distance the knots from one another but I follow this tutorial pretty closely. Other than that I really have no other complaints, so I would like to thank you for the tutorial, it really helped me a lot.

I remember this was very popular late 70's early 80's. My grandmother had a neighbor who made very big ones for her hanging plants. She sold them for lots of money back then. My grandmother loved them. This in my next obsession, love it!

I followed this video tutorial and made this plant hanger a few hours ago. For those of you wondering; it took me exactly 2.5 hours and I did have a lot of excess cord left over. It was a great tutorial and I found it very easy to follow along.

I used 3,5m rope (then put in half) ended um with a hanger the lentgh of about 80cm, measured to where the plantpot sits in (the bottom of it) I got excess rope of 35-70 cm which is perfect, cause it's a little something dangling down but you don't waste metres of material! I used 4mm thick rope. and most importantly: I switched the strands I was working with when you go from normal square knot to the spiral -> so I don't just use half of the strands knotting (I hope this makes sense, but it's easier to understand when you're actually doing it) because I was scared that half of them will turn out really long and the other half short and I will waste a lot at the end. all in all a nice tutorial and I understood the techique quite quickly! will try more different knots now

Just made this and the hanger, from the TOP of the 2 inch ring, to the bottom of the bottom loop, is approximately 34 inches. There is quite a bit of extra cord, so you can adjust the placing of square knots to make it longer. I used 4mm cord. I practiced placement with a Tupperware bowl which was 8 inches wide and 5 inches tall . It’s a 6.5 quart vessel.

Thanks for the tutorial! I just followed all of the instructions using a cotton rope of 5 mm. I'm not sure if it is because of the type of cord I used but I've came up with a lot of excess of about 8 cords of 3,5 foot each. The finished hanger length is of about 3 foot and it is quite like what it's shown in the video! thanks again!

this is what i am finding with all the videos. seems like the filler rope shouldnt be a lot longer than what you want the finished product to be. how much longer the working cords should be, i have yet to find out. so many videos dont tell you the finished length or how many knots to make each time. *sigh*

Took me an hour, you will have a good bit of cord left. I used 4mm. You can probably get away with 13ft cords to start unless your vessel is large. My final measures 3ft for the main portion and a 1ft of just cord hanging. My planter is 9" height and 9" diameter at the top which tapers to about 6" diameter at the bottom.
@LovelyMagpie
@LovelyMagpie 4 жыл бұрын
If you're following the distancing of knots in the video, the hanger will be the same length regardless of the size of your vessel. So, a lot of waste. To accommodate a larger vessel (or decrease waste) you would need to increase the distance between knot groups at one or more points. I've used 10 ft. of cord and that was sufficient. 12 is probably perfect if you like a nice long tassel or longer macrame twists.

I just made 2 following the directions except that I added 12 beads into each. I used 4 mm Bonnie cord for one because I want it to hang outside and I don't want to be concerned with the cotton cord getting wet and rotting. In the second I used some black cord that Mom had leftover from some sort of project, I don't know its composition. This one will hang inside. Now I want to become creative. I want to be able to hang some larger baskets and bowls than would fit into these two hangers. I want additional hangers that may be used to hold extra towels or larger plants. I will make the spirals longer so that the central part can spread wider. (And/or allow longer distances within the length that runs on the sides of the pot. I will play with holding a few containers in that space to check fit. For the next one I make, I'll keep the cords at the same length as the directions. There was much waste in the initial hangers I made; I am hoping to incorporate that cord into my actual planter. Ultimately I may cut my cords longer.

There is only ONE window in my house that has the right light exposure for my plants, but I have no way of keeping my cat from destroying the plants if I put them there. Thinking about trying this... it looks like I could adjust the placement of the knots to make the plants hang higher from the floor where my cat can't get them. My question is... would this work well for an orchid? Also I have one plant that's in a pretty large terra cotta pot, might have to re-pot it to something smaller if I'm going to hang it. Geez when did my life get so complicated.

orchids would look lovely with these! my family have a long history with orchids as both my grandmothers loves them. From all my days in both my grandma's garden i could tell that these flowers work the best if they are placed higher, as both my grandma's place the orchid on the branch of a tree.
