Materials: 3mm single strand cotton string, metal or wooden ring (60-70mm)
Cut eight pieces of string to a length of 4.5 yards or 4 meters.
Double the strings over the ring. Use a 24 inch string to create a gathering knot.
To create the first branch, find four strings that are close together. Create about 18 square knots. Repeat with the next four strands to begin the second branch. Continue until all the strings have been used.
To complete the first branch, create twisting half square knots until the length of the twisting knots is the same as the length of the square knots. Repeat with the remaining branches.
Once all four branches have been completed, create the net for the pot using alternating square knots.
Close the net at the bottom with a gathering knot.
Trim the fringe to the desired length.
Note: To make a planter with three branches, begin with six strings.
Note: To conserve materials, cut half the strings to a shorter length. These will be the middle, or filler strings, of each branch.

You did a great job in this tutorial, Rachel! I use to macrame all the time in the late 70's and 80's and made so many different things. I am now 75 and wanted to do my old favorite hobby again. You were able to get me started on a few knots, which is all I needed. The plant hanger turned out so nice, thanks to you. A wine rack I made back in the day is on my radar now.

How sweet! The American version of my 4th grade school craft project. I grew up in Mexico and I can only give credit to our indigenous population for such wonderful, simple yet beautiful hand-woven creations. I really appreciate the substitution of the original yute or ixtle (yucca fibers) with macrame. My little girl's fingers were sored after weaving the ixtle but it was a lot of fun and my mother loved the plant hanger :) Peace to you all!

Really good tutorial, I knew the square knot prior to watching but it was very well explained. Your instructions seem very easy to follow so far. I've just started my first macrame piece and it's pretty big for a first timer! I'd say that I've attached about 40-45 larks head knots to my dowel in three different colors. I attempted to watch another video so that I could do a spiral down the center mixing two colors, but that was an epic FAIL! I KEPT messing up over and over. So, now I've moved to the very outer edge and I'm watching your video trying to figure out what to do! Thank you so much for taking the time to do these videos❤️❤️❤️

I take my hat off to you for your patience in answering the same questions over and over. I was a macrame teacher in the 70s but I couldn't and wouldn't do one of these KZfaq tutorials. They expect you to respond to all the comments and some of them are just nonsense. They want you to spoon feed them so much and don't want to do things or find out things for themselves. Surely they can Google conversion rates for imperial & metric measurements but they expect you to tell them. Good on you! You deserve a macrame medal . 😂😂👍👍🙏🙏

I had a girls night last night and we all made this hanger! I love how it turned out but when I got to the end I had two verrrrrrrry short ropes and 2 very long ropes in each group. I followed the wing span advice... did I do something wrong? Just start with longer rope next time? Or do you somehow switch on and off with your long & short rope?! I'm new at macrame!
@RachelColton
@RachelColton 4 жыл бұрын
Erika G that sounds so fun! You didn’t do anything wrong. The working strings get used up faster than the filler strings. For certain projects you can use shorter filler strings and longer working strings but it can get complicated with a project like this. You can switch the inner and outer strings and leave a little space to create a cool design. Or just use your scraps for a smaller project like a keychain or earrings!

Great tutorial! However, when doing the square knots in the beginning, the pieces on the outer sides that we are overlapping to create the knot end up way shorter than the inner strands. How can I avoid that from happening? Thanks!!
@RachelColton
@RachelColton 4 жыл бұрын
amy Cafouras the outer working strings will get used up faster than the inner filler strings. You can make your filler strings shorter to begin with or you can swap the inner and outer strings at some point in your design.

could you tell me why I keep getting short string on the sides while the middle stay long
@RachelColton
@RachelColton 4 жыл бұрын
Christopher Frederick yes! The middle (filler) strings aren’t used for much so they remain long. The outer (working) strings get used up making all the knots. If you are afraid you might run out of string, you can swap the inner and outer strings at some point in your design. If you make loose knots at the switch point it actually makes a cool design. Depending on the project you can make the filler strings shorter to begin with or just use the cut offs for smaller projects. I hope that helps!

Rachel Colton I used about 4.3 meters per string (8 strings total). Plus you need about 0.6 meters for each gathering knot. I used about 35.6 meters total for the entire project. Some viewers had issues with their project being too short so you may want to go longer. I hope that helps.
