I hope I'm not being pedantic, since you may have visited Japan or read up on the subject of onsens. However, for those who don't know: Most Japanese hot spring resorts are segregated -- they'll usually have one side for men, and one for women, at least in the public bathing areas. So Tengen and his wives wouldn't have jumped into the "hot tub" together there. That being said, some of the high-end spas feature expensive rooms with private outdoor baths, perfect for couples (or whatever you call Tengen's situation) to enjoy together. And Japan does have a few onsen resorts that allow mixed public bathing.
