This is part fourty-four of the tutorial series 'How to use Arturia Pigments 4'.
In this video we discuss and learn how to use the four Macro knobs.
Macros are important to use because they give the user extra control options to pilot the patch they are using. Macros can be used to control one, or many different parameters at once. At some point you will be wishing you had more macros!
This video marks the end of the 'How To Use Pigments' playlist. If there are additional questions or new updates to pigments, all those future videos will be posted in this playlist!
Thank you for watching and I wish you all the best with pigments!

Jon, this series was amazing. So unbelievably detailed, tons of great tips and even history. It had it all. It was incredibly well delivered. One of the best things you do is explain every single thing you are doing as your doing it, including the "why" when you haven't gone over it before. This really helps cement understanding. I feel truly confident I can create amazing sounds and actually put all of my sound ideas on paper now. You deserve a ton more viewers, and I'm confident if you teach everything you do at the level of this course you will start to get noticed and pick up a ton more loyal viewers. You definitely have at least one now.

Thank you so much for your kind comment! I'm glad you noticed that I always try to include the 'why' in things. I make a effort to put as many 'whys' as I can in these videos because it really makes the learning stick. We can know 'what' something is, but without the 'why', it makes it much more difficult in the future to put that into practice. My goal is that once someone like yourself has made it through this series, you'll be very comfortable in the synth and if there is a certain sound you want to make, you'll know exactly what to reach for to get the best results.

You're very welcome! That's exactly what I'm aiming for. I never was a fan of all the fast jump cuts, and filler material in videos like "Hey sound designers! it's ya boi Jonny B Good, make sure to smash that like button comment, subscribe, follow me on twitter, instagram, tik tok, sign up to my patreon, and check me out on only fans!" and they rarely ever deliver clear and understandable content. Not to mention their logos, webcam and other clutter that removes screen space real estate. I felt the approach to be much better as if the viewer was sitting next to me and we go though everything together while explaining what is doing what, and more importantly the 'why'. Why are we using an LFO, as opposed to an envelope. And if people want to subscribe, donate, like the videos, they will do so from their own free will as opposed to being commanded to do so. During a few sound design videos, I put the reminder out, that if the patch was enjoyed, to mirror that enjoyment with a thumbs up as to help the video and more importantly as to get helpful feedback of what types of sounds are in need to be taught and have good presets for.

Amazing course of Pigments!! I've just been watching the part 25 and can't resist to come here, the last part, to say THANK YOU for this course. Despite my English is not very good I can get you 99% because of your clear pronunciation, quality sound, perfect explaining, etc.

Great series. I’m just getting into sound design and this was very helpful. I’m going to watch it all again and follow along. I was just learning all the parameters this time. I think after watching the whole series a few times through I should be able to grasp everything easier.

Thanks man!! And pigments is perfect for getting into sound design. The UI is very well set up and smooth to use. If you come across any questions, feel free to reach out, I'm always around 🤙 I've been working on a synthesizer fundamentals course that handles all the terminology and technical aspects of sound design. If that interests you, you can find it on the front page of my channel.

Hello, Jon! Thank you for your tutorial. Can you please make a separate part in your tutirial of how to use a Hold Button (located in play setting section). When pressed, it allows layering multiple sounds (kind of Latch mode) but i don't have the slightest idea of how to record the resulting sound. It looks like a record button doesn't work proprly in this particular scenario.

Thanks dude! I can definitely talk more about hold mode in a future video. The hold feature in pigments is pretty basic. When enabled it will just 'hold' the notes for you that you press until new notes are played. It's great for chords using the arpeggiator.

@@jonaudio Thank you for your reply. Is it possible to record these "holded" notes live? For example, when i press a HOLD button and press several different keys on my midi keyboard, I am getting constantly played chord sound. After that i am changing sound parametrs and press different key, so the music keep on playing but it sounds in a different manner and so on.. By doing that i can create a whole ambient track. But how to record the whole melody from very begining? Recently i played around with "Intricate Pad" preset. I pressed record button and played for about 30 minutes (in "hold" mode). I was sure that ableton would record the whole melody but it only recorded one chord.. I was very dissapointed. Any solution? What would be awesome not only create but also record live ambient performances "in Hold mode".

What a great video, thank you! Can the seuqncer play indefinitely?
@jonaudio
@jonaudio 10 ай бұрын
you're very welcome!! The sequencer can play as long as you like either by holding down a note, or alternatively you can select 'hold' under the 'keyboard tab' that way you hit one know and the sequencer will run endlessly until you de-activate the hold parameter. The hold parameter functions both with the arp/seq is on or when it's off.

Is there a possibility to automate the bitch bend wheel ? Same goes for the macros. Of course its very powerfull when turned manually but... Thank you for this great tutorial
@jonaudio
@jonaudio 8 ай бұрын
You're very welcome! Yes it is possible to automate the pitch bend wheen and all the macros. Depending on what daw you are in, how you automate those parameters will be different. In FL you move the parameter you want to automate and click on the knob icon on the top bar of FL Studio and select 'create automation clip' and it will create a clip in the timeline that you can edit from there.

@@jonaudio The macros tutorial has been very helpful. Can Pigments assign an LFO , for example to modulate a macro knob-- which is another form of automation , I suppose?
