www.HeritageArsenal.com Tour an impressive collection of military artifacts attributed to Michael G. Stahl, a non-commissioned officer who distinguished himself in combat in Vietnam with both the 5th Special Forces Group and MACV SOG - the latter a classified program in which Stahl served as the Reconnaissance Team Leader of RT Michigan and earned his second Silver Star, second Bronze Star, Air Medal, and Purple Heart. Interestingly, Stahl participated in "Operation DUMBO DROP," made famous by the movie of the same name in the 1980s, and managed to have time while in Vietnam to join a skydiving club, "The Sharp Chuter."

Have my dads scrapbook and it has many of the same things. Vietnam para wings, SSM, BSM, Air Medal, MACV/SOG certificate, Greek & German DLI Ft. Ord. After two tours & two TDYs in Vietnam he was assigned to Detachment-A Berlin where he was again working with CIA, in a highly classified capacity. They may have known each other? Thanks for making this great tribute!🙏🏻🙏🏻

I went to school with Mike Stahl in Bradenton, FL and also studied German at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, CA, although not at the same time as Mike. He had a short but impressive career. I just remember him as a good guy in school.

I don't know if he's still alive or not, the way you worded your comment indicates to me that he is not. However, if I'm wrong, tell him I said, as I do to every Vietnam Veteran I meet, "Thank you for your service IN VIETNAM, and Welcome Home!"

I took over Michigan from an SFC James (something). Did one insert where we were shot off LZ. He DEROSed leaving me 1-0. The Americans on my team were always 'ad hoc,' so I never really got to know them.

@Will Derby You do realize that when I enlisted in '62, my base pay was about $78.00 month, of which the Green Machine took back about $70. But what can I say? The entire experience was a hell of a lot more fun than fear. ;

@Will Derby We had Aussies in our Mike Force. Spent 1/2 hour talking to one over a PRC-25 and it took me 2 months to get rid of my accent. Of course, because we were so compartmentalized, there was lots that went on that went unknown. But I don't remember Bright Light' teams, per se. I did one Bright Light ( 2 if you count going in to help a team that had been stuck by lightning.) It seemed to be a matter of who could grab their web gear and go the quickest.

@@michaelstahl3906 thank you for your devoted service Michael Stahl. MACV/SOG warriors have a courage and commitment to their team that is beyond comprehension by most men. Legendary is too weak a word for what was done, and those who did it.

Hi, Mike -- Your German is still very good. I'm not even going to attempt it. One problem with my German is that I had just finished 3 years of Spanish at Manatee High and then joined the Army in Sept. 1963. After basic at Fort Jackson I went to DLI and did various details until German class started in Jan. 1964 You would think the Army would want me to build on my background in Spanish but no. I graduated in June 1964. The bottom half of my German class was retrained as teletype operators and sent to Viet Nam. After leaving Monterey I went to Ft. Meade, MD and had some courses at NSA. After that I went to Germany and was stationed at a small base near Nuremberg. After a short time there I was reassigned to West Berlin and was there from Jan 1965 until Aug 1967. While in Berlin I took a number of college courses through the University of Maryland. West Berlin was a beautiful city but I never thought the Wall would come down in my lifetime. I would like to go back and see what Berlin looks like now and look up my old barracks and the site where I worked. I returned to Germany in in 1989 and visited a friend in Heidelberg and also took bus tours to Italy and Paris. I would love to do a river cruise on the Rhine sometime. When I went back to Germany I could get by in German but often I would be trying to finish a sentence but could only think of a word in Spanish. The reverse was true on my 3 trips to Costa Rica on birding tours. But I think I could pick up the languages again if I spent much time in either country. It's hard to believe it has been 56 years since I was in Monterey. Right now I am at my summer home in Sparta, NC. The temp is 49 degrees. We have had a few Covid-19 cases here but no deaths. I usually head back to Bradenton mid-November for the winter but this year that all depends on the situation down there later on. I hope you are safe and doing well. It was great to hear from you. Sorry for the delay in answering. I remembered reading your message but not where it was. Auf Wiedersehen.
