I stumbled apon this from the benevolence of the KZfaq algorithm, and as a longtime DND fan this looks awesome!

A couple other references you might find interesting - D&D 3.5e's Epic Level Handbook had rules for making, well, Epic Level Spells. The result here was extremely silly and easily abused, but still very cool for expressing the crazy heights of level 21+ wizards. Another game to look at is Anima: Beyond Fantasy's system for building martial arts moves out of individual parts, including cool options like adding limitations to boost the power of the resulting ability. I know there are other open-ended systems along these lines as well - I think it's pretty common for super hero or shonen themed TTRPGs to make use of flexible ability systems like this to allow a relatively manageable set of building blocks to support a wide range of possible character abilities.

I like how nanites can potentially add an elemental affect on. It would be cool if Sprint had some effect where it normally was just a dash, but left behind a trail of [element effect] when augmented with nanites.
@Beets_Creations
@Beets_Creations Ай бұрын
That was actually the plan and somehow I think I neglected to put what the design will actually look like. Its still a work in progress but Imagen something like this. Plasma nanites Area of effect - Sets targeted area on fire or fills with smoke Offensive - Attacks now burn targets Defensive - Defending against an attack now burns your attacker Medical - Healing removes Frozen and Bleeding Stealth - Smoke - Blinds/removes sense of smell to all targets within 5ft Mobility - Your movement trails fire behind you The nanite would alter the ability based on its functionality. Hopefully, that makes more sense. Thanks for pointing that out!!

4:18 yoooooooooooo. I remember playing that as an elementary school child with my younger sister. It's funny how this game, despite being so extreamly adult, is so filled with obscure references and wordplays that I literally just got one derogatory joke (a thing on a stick) and only because it was on a picture. And yeah, I guess it also has all this gore, but I always just saw it less as body horror and more as cool flesh magic. IT WAS MY FAVORITE BOARD GAME (and still is due to me bearly playing any board games). Thanks for nostalgia, mate.

Haha my pleasure, honestly I'm kinda surprised how old the game is. I got it in the last few years. I didn't realize it's been out so long. I was thinking it was inspired by Rick and Morty but it seems like it actually predates it.

Why balance in a ttrpg? Actually, why have such an involved magic system if you want players to focus on the roleplay? I mean, which is the focus of your game?
@Beets_Creations
@Beets_Creations Ай бұрын
Great question! To start I'll say I'm still figuring a lot of this game design stuff as I go. So a lot of what I do is experimental. That said I'll give you my current thoughts and reasoning behind all of this. (plus honestly, it's a little difficult to sum up all my thoughts but ill give it a shot haha) Let's start with balance, and truthfully your right balance to an extent doesn't matter. I'm honestly not too afraid of a game being broken at times but there has to at least be some consistency. Classes need to be balanced around each other otherwise some players will feel like they are worse than their fellow players, which can lead to them feeling bad or less useful. Characters also need to be balanced around enemies, monsters, etc... as you don't want them constantly winning or losing encounters due to poor balancing. All that said I do think that it is okay for the game to become unbalanced at times letting characters have cool moments or tough challenges for the sake of the story. Rule of cool kind of stuff. So over all as long as the game isn't constantly broken I'm not too worried about balance. As for an involved magic system. I have a few theories on what makes a good roleplaying game, but one I'm testing out currently is that a more narratively heavy combat system and lighter narrative systems are the way to go. Spells I find are great narrative tools. They allow a character to do something that talking or otherwise normal human actions couldn't achieve. They help provide utility which is one of the main factors of cool narrative abilities. Take something like Dnd's mage hand. It is incredibly narratively impactful. Allowing players more agency over their spells allowing them to make cool narrative moments I think hopefully will allow for cooler scenarios and better roleplay. Hopefully, that answers the question. Maybe I'll make a video on this sort of thing again so I can gather my thoughts more cohesively. Thanks for the good question!
