Having done the same type of repair, I would like to share some advice: - Use an acidic rust neutralizer to get rid of the rust you couldn't sand off - Use a zinc protector spray before applying the filler (the filler is full of water) - Do not wet sand the body filler - Do not sand down the whole part to clear coat it, try to keep the repainted area small - After a week of so wet sand the whole piece with a 2000 sand paper then polish (the paint color will then be uniform)

Great video for a quick temporary fix but a few things. 1. Always treat the bare metal with a rust inhibitor or zinc primer. 2. Your better of just spray the whole panel evenly with base coat to stop the blending showing through the laquer. 3. Once the laquer has hardened after 48hrs 1500grit wet and dry it till it's eggshell then bring back the shine with cutting compound & a polisher, it will come out like glass.

Good effort at home..But, you should remove all the rust first inside and outside ie remove the arch liner at least to do this.You have not removed any exterior parts and eventually the paint will flake from these areas.You have filled over the rust and have also used water over bare metal and filler that is porous.An acid etch before primer will also help to keep the rust at bay. You did an fantastic job with the tools at hand and have given many people really good knowledge on what you did,keep up the good work .

This is a great cheap and cheerful repair for a car that you are trying to get another year or two out of.

The rust will be back sooner than later because it's not near gone. It's evened out, flattened and painted over. And the painting with both color and clear coat should be applied with large movements from off of the part and over it all and out again in a steady motion. Never small movements pressing and letting off the nozzle while directed onto what you're painting. The big problem here is usually the back side of the rust since the pores usually goes right through. I have found motorcycle chain grease in spray to be quite good in sealing existing rust and keeping it from growing. The inside should be cleaned with a steel brush or something to get the bare metal/rust exposed. Then sprayed with grease. And after some while maybe a spray with a rust protector keeping the grease from drying or getting washed off.

Rust treatment and primer prior to filler. Don’t use any water until you flat your final coat otherwise you risk trapping moisture and causing further corrosion. Don’t mask panel lines on the same plane - blend.

You can get a ready painted new wing/fender for £95 delivered here in the UK ( not sure how much that is in USD ) but to me it’s just not worth bothering by the time you’ve bought the paint/bondo etc you’ve spent half as much if not more than a new one

Nice job! Have done this in past, only problem even with the "rust stop" over rust within a month it will bubble from behind fender. Loosing battle, nice to do if selling car right after doing it.

Wheel arch rust comes from the back side. Washing the mud and salt from the inside lip of all the fenders frequently will prevent this kind of rust from even starting.

use green fiberglass in the can its waterproof it will last longer than bondo but put the fiberglass first then bondo for the fine finish

No body shop will warranty rust repairs. You can spend thousands and have the rust still come back...This is a good video for people who don't want to spend $$$ at a body shop and still have the rust come back. I've done that before and it sucks.

That's bright the rest of it needs done it's a 20year old car looks a different shade of gold on the wing probably needs a polish to fade it in but good job on the cheap cheers mate saved me a fortune but my wing's are coming off the car and inside the arch is getting done aswell to last as long as the out side then back on to finish the filler n paint n polish after with good quality polish with very very fine grit 😎😎😎

The paint needs a few days to cure before apply laquer you will get cracks in the future, plastic turn lights must take down but this is ok if you want to sell fast the car! 👍

Not to be picky, but that wasn`t a good exampel of rust removing- and it wasn`t the first time on this spot, wasn`t it? :) First of all: If you see rust there- you will have it in the bow as well. So you are by far better of by removing ALL of it. An angelgrinder is an adequat tool for that; that sandpaperdisk is not. You rather want to use a hard plastfoam disk, which gives you less heat into the material and do not press the debrise back into the material. Secondarily: you want to hav an acid- based rust remover most likely in paste and cover it with some plastic (Do not attempt to use pure acid- that is stupid for several reasons). third and most important: You want to have not a bunch of small spots but rather one, maybe several nice big areas of minimum 5 by 5 cm which you, after washing off your remover, carefully put zink on. I prefer to remove the bumper and use a cheap, simple overnight bath in a tub with a zink anode and a battery to it. Removing the bumper gives you also the possibility to check for hidden damages..But it is also doable" on the fly" ( remember to deconnect car battery before doing so )In case of lazyness or for other reasons you just want to use sprayzink do yourself a BIG favour and wash the area with industrial degreaser ( not the waterbased ones- they suck) That will give you a solid base for rebuilding the paintjob as further explained in this video.

What do I have to lose. For you experts...I have ground down the rust to bear metal so how did rust develop under sealed paint and clearcoat??? Crazy.

I just use grit paper, primer, basecoat and clearcoat in spray cans.

Wet sand the filler or not ? Let's think about it: The body filler's mineral content is basically "Talc" or Hydrated Magnesium Silicate, it is hygroscopic, there is it absorbs water from the atmosphere, so yep, the Body Filler has water in it. I would DTM (Direct to metal primer, usually has a greenish color to it, I believe it has Zinc Chromate) on the bare metal, before applying the filler, but if the rust treatment means phosphoric acid, you kinda can get away with it.

You make it look so easy but I can try on my car gotta touch up and area that got scraped against a pole above back passenger wheel well. My only issue is trying to find my cars colour match I got sand paper got the clear coat just need to find the base coat that matches

One major step not done was the lip of the wheel well. This is where the rust starts and one winter later this fender I'm sure looks like crap again.

You don't wetsand body filler, just primer that goes over body filler right before basecoat

Nice dude only the color is way off and u mask the door and hood half. When u spray clear u got ton of overspray its now al over the car ;)

Vw has a 12 year corrosion warranty and would have professionally replaced that fender with a new oem free of charge. Owner was probably just barely outside the warranty when this was shot. Ouch.

It's a short term fix. As others have said better to replace with new complete fender.

Too much hardener. And also important to take the backside of the fender otherwise the rust comes back quickly.

Not a bad video just missing a few important details regarding using the correct rust application plus you dont use water on these repairs, oh and only work a small area and blend the paint by using fold up curved paper around the effected area not the whole wing :)

Should have removed the whole panel, treat rust on the back of the panel too. Also no need to sand and paint the whole panel, only the repair area and learn to blend it out
