Y'all, I am a solid low alto. Sopranos frighten me with their terrifying heights. But when I'm singing along to this song, I too am gifted with the ability to REACH THE VERY HEAVENS and it honestly scares me *so much.* I am unworthy of this power.

In the Reign of Terror, there were about 450,000 people killed. Of those, 16,594 were due to Madame Guillotine. Why? Because they were nobles, had family that had left France, or even had simply hoarded goods. Or, as another person stated: "Those who have done nothing against freedom, also have done nothing for it." Truly, the Revolutionaries had lost their reason, they had truly gone insane, to quote The Scarlet Pimpernel.
@KeithDec257 жыл бұрын
WM Very well stated! Throw in the huge amounts of poor and middle class who were butchered-some were also loaded on to barges tightly bound then the barges were sunk...I think of the illiterate seamstress at the end of A TALE OF TWO CITIES who was butchered for no reason at all...After the jackals like Robespierre and others devoured each other the French ended up with a worse tyrant/dictator-Napoleon ..What does that say about human nature?

Actually yeah, but the situation was awfull, France was attacked from inside (Vendée, Girondins supporters...) and from outside (all Europe). So the gouvernement made extreme punishment to save the revolution. I don't say it is not horrible... But than we had to understand why Robespierre AND the Montagnard act like this... It is no black or white.

@TinkerHell042 жыл бұрын
Oh shit!! I wasn't aware that we could have favorite ways of execution!!! I must have been absent that day!! LOL on a side note, when I was in college ( I'm an actor btw) & it was coming up on Halloween, I told the guys in the shop we should have a party and we should build a full size working guillotine....SO WE DID!!! It was incredibly DANGEROUS especially because we were a bunch of drunk ass people, so we really had to keep an eye on " Madam" so no dumbass cut off any body parts!! But, we did "chop up" many a pumpkin & watermelon & any other fruit we could find. Then the next year in our backyard ( where we had her set up), we had a lovely crop of delicious fruits & veggies, due to all the seeds we had spilled at the party!!! Ahhh college.... Good times!! I do wonder what ever happened to it though, cuz I don't remember taking it down. Hmmmm

Lyrics in french : (don't ask me why I did that) Je connais le caniveau et l'odeur de la rue. Flash ! Slash ! Scintille et taillade ! Elle va vous ravir ! Madame Guillotine ! Tranche ! Madame vient de mordre ! Donnez-lui plus à dévorer ! C'est une reine affamée ! Zing ! Savourez la morsure ! Comme elle vous coupe ! Madame Guillotine ! Tranche ! Venez au paradis ! GLOIRE À SA MAJESTÉ ! Madame Guillotine !

Well yeah, that was a large part of what the Scarlet Pimpernel was about. The one in this musical who sings "God, when did man lose his reason? Save us, my God, if you're there God, can you not feel the terror like a fire in the air?" is none other than Marquis de St. Cyr: a nobleman in the story being prepped for the guillotine. He and his entire family were executed as the beginning of this story. While the anger against him had been understandable given he'd had a man beaten for daring to court his daughter while being lowborn and because he had been collaborating with Austria during the revolution-- execution, and especially the execution of his entire family bloodline in response was in no way just.
@someonedraws10832 жыл бұрын
And from what I heard in class: they let the young crown Prince who wasn't older than two rot and die in jail because executing him would rile up the rest of Europe even more, but they also couldn't let him live because they were scared he'd take back the crown as an adult... he died alone as a literal toddler... fun times...

@mgh76342 жыл бұрын
@@i.cs.zamodits True. But at the same time, the ruling classes absolutely got what was coming to them. You don't starve and mistreat your people for that long before the consequences catch up. While it absolutely went too far (the wholesale round-up of entire families for execution will always be inexcusable and barbaric no matter what the justification), remember that the people carrying out this brutality had suffered similarly for generations upon generations. The decadence, disloyalty, incompetence, irresponsibility, and sheer lack of self-awareness from the ruling elite of that time was nothing less than staggering, and more harrowing was how obviously little they cared about their fellow countrymen that it never factored into any decisions they made. I mean... they'd straight up sell out their history, their culture, their language, their places of birth, the lives of all their most loyal soldiers and subjects, and condemn their people to misery just to secure an extra title, a colony, or some more wealth. There were kings and queens from one end of Europe to the other who were selling out their nations to foreign powers like it was nothing, like it was purchasing product at the market, because to them, it really was nothing. Hell, half the time the king ruling your nation didn't even come from your country or speak your language. You were just a fiefdom, a money machine sending taxes to them. But even the rulers born and raised would abandon you to the wolves for a shiney new bauble, and they'd sleep like a baby afterwards without a care or regret to your suffering. Because they don't think like you, nor do they care. That was how they all acted and behaved then. It's how they act now too. Just take a look at the world around you. Eventually, as is always shown in human history, it all comes back around though. The rich and powerful play their games until those that have to suffer them decide they longer can. Then the reckoning comes, some take it too far, as is always the case in war and uprising, and when a new order is put in place, the incoming ruling class either change to fit the new demands of the people who put them there or they paint themselves the victims as if everything that happened just played out the way it did for no reason at all.
