The eyes in this are well realized. Edit after researching: the eyes are LIVE ACTION eyes with an actor, that were then composited on top of the stop motion puppets. Watching this, I felt like something was up and wondered if they were human eyes, but I assumed I was imagining it I didn’t think they’d actually do something like that. Such an interesting production.

She’s so real in an unreal way. She takes it all in without giving anything away. Her mouth never opens. So closed up is she. So determined to breathe through nostrils only.

I think this short film can be interpreted in many different ways. In my opinion the train represents life. The guys who were playing chess did not really make their own move. They just let the train decide what to happen next and they accepted it. In other words there are people who just go with the flow of their life accepting everything. The perverted guy could be someone who would want to harm you in your life. The thiefs represent that you could always lose everything without you being able to do something against it. And then when the thiefs stole that perverted man's liver (?) it might mean if you try to harm others, you will be harmed to at the end. And when that woman was wandering around in the train not knowing where to go just shows that your life will always be a maze with unknown paths. You could also fall down and then want to give up. And in my opinion the butterfly (?) symbolises someone or something in your life that will make you stand up and show you the right path. Anyway, I like to interpret it like that haha😂 ps: after 2 years KZfaq send me a notification that this comment exist hahaha I want to thank everyone who agreed to my theorie and reading other people's opinion was also very interesting. Her eyes are so lifelike and real. Especially when she is blinking at the moth as it’s flying against the light in the train her eyes reacted in a way that was so real and simultaneously so customary for human beings, but so complex when seen in a clay figurine’s facial expression. is anyone going to mention how real and organic her eyes look?

I think more than anything this short film is simply depicting human nature & emotions. Let's break it down: She's a woman who has a lot of baggage trying to go somewhere. She meets strangers. She's amused, curious, polite, and nervous...she ignores the strangers then, & I think she's also a little sad & a little lonely. The train stops. She's the only one who can't sleep. Instead she's writing a letter, but doesn't know what to say, & she never finishes it. She's scared now, hearing unexplained noises. Someone, something, is coming. She passes out, wakes up, her baggage is gone, she's alone, she vaguely remembers what happened, she gets up & runs from whatever it is, crying, she trips, then gets up & keeps walking. The moth. The moth is in the beginning & the end. At first she swats it away, takes it for granted, but at the end she follows it. The moth is connected to her. It's something she trusts/thinks is beautiful. It leads her/guides her to the light. I think it's just...depicting life. That's all. We all have our baggage, our fears, our little moments of contentment or happiness, we all experience death, cruelty, sadness, loneliness, disgust, we all have our fair share of bitter tears, we all are connected to something even if it's a thing as simple & small as a moth...

this animation haunted me so much when i first saw it as a kid, now that im an adult i can appreciate the artistry and work that went into creating such a fine piece of art

Дед и внук - это начало и конец нашего пути ( детство и старость). Наши страхи и соблазны - это мужик похожий на черта. Мотылек , летящий на свет- это лёгкость бытия. I interpret it this way. The massive baggages she has when waiting for the train are the memories / precious things she collected during her life. But she only clutch on some of them as she can't remember / bear all of them. For example a ball may be the things that she experienced during childhood. The train is life. She hop on and goes wherever it takes her. She sits there like any other people, just let life do whatever to them. Including the boy, the grandpa, the salarymen, and the pervert retired tennis player. The only goals for her is to keep on her baggages safe. She doesn't live her life, but trap in the past and insecure. One day, life just gone bad. She just lost the things that she sees as goals such as expectations, emotional burdens, etc. Then she hits realization that she can't be just stay like that forever. She takes action and go out of her comfort zone. Searching for where she can be free from the life that she doesn't want. The butterfly is her voice of her heart. She listen to herself and find out what she really want to be in life. Now she takes control, she no longer fear. It showed by how she walk confidently near the end. Then she really free. Fly to wherever she want, without her pasts memories or any expectations of people. -The End.

I think that the luggage represented her memories of her life. Notice how when she went into the light, she had nothing, even her hat came off. Shows you that when you die, you leave with nothing but yourself. You leave everything behind, the good and bad. My dad had this saying, that when you first come Into this world, you come with a gift, a baby curls it's hand as if it's holding something, but when you die, your hands are wide open...leaving with nothing

Excelente cortometraje animado. Es de ésos que te hacen hacer catarsis, especialmente si se está en un punto frágil o vulnerable de la vida. El mensaje que me llevo es que cuanto menos pesado sea el equipaje que llevemos (y no sólo material, sino emocional), más liviano y placentero será el viaje por la corta y frágil ruta de la vida. Mientras más llevemos equipaje físico/material y de perjudiciales apegos emocionales (pueden ser el miedo excesivo, el rencor, el pesimismo, la desesperanza, la soberbia, las ataduras al pasado, etc.), más complicado será salir del torbellino de las cadenas que nos conducen más directamente a la muerte que no trasciende, a esa muerte vana y fútil que podríamos tener si no tomamos consciencia de lo realmente importante y esencial de la vida. Otra cosa es morir en paz y con el equipaje de vida ligero y liviano (tanto en lo material como en lo emocional), en plena armonía con el resto de quienes nos rodearon en vida, y sobre todo, con nosotros mismos, siendo felices de manera genuina y auténtica, sin hacer daño a los demás. Нет слов, чтобы описать увиденное и прочувствованное! Да, и эти глаза напротив... Глаза - живые, заплаканные, полные невыносимой тоски, страха, отчаянья... Семнадцать минут меня не покидало чувство тревоги, которое нарастало и нарастало... Соседи по купе, остановка поезда посреди леса, сам ночной лес, воры... Все гениальное - просто! И кратко. Ни один трехчасовой блокбастер не подарит вам столько эмоций! Я уверен. Моя оценка - 10/10.

This was nominated for the Oscar for best animated short. It didn't win but deserved to. A remarkable piece of animation.

I am truly impressed by the level of expression the characters of this story have... is it as if they were somehow alive.

I am a Physicians Assistant and what i gather from this video is that this woman is going through the stages of death. Many of my terminally ill patients describe nightmares or hallucinations. We all worry about our belongings and want to take them with us. The moth has actually been an omen for death, another superstition connected to the moth is that when one is seen, your soul is already on it's journey. Of course this would only hold true if you were dying. Please don't panic if you're healthy and see a moth lol. They are beautiful, adaptive and gentle. This is just my take on the video. Its really well done.

Когда ВСЁ в кадре попадает в "зловещую долину", за исключением настолько реалистичных глаз главной героини, кажется, что это живой человек, запертый в искусственной, фальшивой оболочке в нереальном и жутком мире. Я так понял, она села в поезд со всем жизненным багажом, ночью произошло что-то, подобное переходу в иной мир (в материальном смысле - масштабное ограбление, но не только), всех пассажиров забрали, (возможно, в ад?) весь жизненный багаж пропал. И теперь её душа заперта в несущемся сквозь ночь поезде, как мотылек в фонаре.

I found this masterpiece again after a long time. Although it looks like a stop motion, the character's movements and formations are surprisingly realistic and attractive. Throughout this movie, I was obsessed with anxiety and dreamy feelings.

Besides the fact that her eyes were beautiful and expressive.... WTH did I just watch??

I remember watching this 8 years ago. I was 9-10 and I remember being so scared. I was also very creeped out by that perverted man. His gaze sent shivers down my spine. Short films like these definitely hit different when you're younger. Rn I'm just enjoying this master piece while trying to find its meaning. It's really interesting to see how quickly people's perception changes throughout the years.

The first scene on the train ride just reminds me of the train rides I would take to Chicago to see my boyfriend the first few times we met. It was very eye opening to see people from so many walks of life. I never am impatient or on edge because I just know that these people are all on their own path. I just stick to my path. I've had so many conversations with people all over the world and I feel that we take that for granted so much nowadays. How we can speak to someone who comes from miles and miles away from a place you'll never see probably. I just am in awe of humanity some days. This film brings to light a lot of the harshness a person can go through in the path of life.

This film spoke to me about all of the emotional baggage we collect during our lives. In the end we leave this world just the same as when we first entered it ... with nothing.I Well done!

ofc this will sound pretty ridiculous but my interpretation of this film is that the woman is in a coma and that she's dying. The train represents her journey onto the other side. Her baggage are all her memories and she's ready to take it all with her even though the train seems overwhelming. The moth represents a peaceful final salvation that follows next. While on the train she regains a piece of her conscience, the people sitting around her are the feelings she suddenly got back (lust, greed etc). The train stopping is she then fearing and having second thoughts about getting to the other side. The thievs are caused by her subconscious mind suddenly starting to funcion again, she's in a morgue (hence why they're cutting up someone's stomach and taking out their insides, which i can conclude means that she agreed to donate her organs) but since they need her organs, the doctors submit her into anaesthesia and then they kill her. When she runs into the room with bloody tables, its her brain replaying the last bits of her memory before she "becomes the moth" and peacefully gets to the other side.

She is a woman in a very relatable way. My interpretation is that, she was just tired of life. And although she was moving away to somewhere else, probably, searching for a new beginning, she still had all her sufferings sort of packed up with her as well. She didnt know how to let it all go, so she carried them with her. The single train journey, a stage in life, taught her a lesson for life. To let things that weigh you down, go. She lost her way and got confused and overwhelmed because she didn't know if she was going the right way but she had hope. So she learnt to trust herself and follow her hope, where she eventually found her way. I'm still flabbergasted this masterpiece was made 13 years ago.

I keep an unforgettable souvenir of this film.. Such a beautiful animation, great technic and fascinating story !

Was a film student in college, have a strong appreciation for stop motion and all FX creations. This was a well put together film, loved the textures, the backgrounds and the characters. The chess players were fascinating, agree with Hanna, the train made the decisions. Merci to the crew and director for their creativity!

This is both a very inspirational and very traumatizing bit of my childhood, honestly. Christ the whole flashback scene she has is still so goddamn terrifying.

So much love & care has gone into this character, Mdm Tutli-Putli. Exceptional film; surreal, beautiful, eerie, with a dream~like quality in parts. I’m clearly late af, but, I loved it!

Para mi su equipaje simboliza todas sus posesiones, tan fisicas como mentales, quiere llevarlas todas a donde quiera que vaya, el tren simboliza el paso al futuro, su cabina pues su espacio en el tren, su pequeño espacio en el tiempo, los hombres jugando ajedrez que nunca llegan a hacer una jugada representan la indecision, si no tomas la decision alguien más la tomará por ti (el zarandeo del tren en este caso) y alguno terminará perdiendo, el niño y el viejo totalmente desconocidos para ella, ya que ella está en el medio, siendo un adulto, representan lo que fue, lo que pudo ser pero que no es, el hombre que le hace esa señar obsena representa la lujuria y el deseo, los vicios y como ella lo censura totalmente, cuando esta escribiendo la carta creo que es cuando ella intenta dejar un mensaje a alguien especial, pero la enfermedad repentina (los vichejos raros que se suben al tren y ponen gas en su cabina) la conducen a la muerte antes de poder hacer algo, cuando despierta y toma conciencia de que lo ha perdido todo, hasta la capacidad de decidir, intenta huir de lo que le espera, siguiendo corredores interminables dentro del tren que no llevan en realidad a ninguna parte, la polilla simboliza la muerte de ella, quien la tranquiliza, la tranquiliza y la guia a "la luz", es decir, a su muerte. El venado en el camino también resulta ser ella, arrollada por la velocidad atroz del tren, es decir, la mujer (el venado) termina siendo arrollada por el futuro para el cual a pesar de sus multiples pertenencias y experiencias no pudo frenar, simplemente no estaba preparada para vivir y eso la llevó a su muerte. Al final para mi representa que hay que llevar equipaje ligero y util, ser versatil con las decisiones, asi se tome la decision equivocada será el primer paso para algo más, será una lección más, será algo nuevo y util que llevar en la maleta que llevamos, prepararse para lo que venga, actuar ahora ya que nadie nos asegura que tendremos otro día para vivir, nadie nos asegura que llegaremos a viejos y tal como ella lo hizo, llegar hasta el final. Like everything in life, this film is open for interpretation.But based on what I saw, it's about a woman who carries the baggage of sins. She's on the road to heaven, but is at a stand still between where souls cross from the real world to a better place. She hasn't yet forgiven herself for the sins she's committed. The robber is herself as she 'fights' to figure out how to forgive herself for her sins so that she can cross the line.

Best claymation film i have ever seen. I don't know how it was done but putting a touch of realism into the characters worked very well. And the movement was something i have never seen before, very organic. Well done!

Her eyes are so realistic. Whoever made them did a good job

She's dying, seeing images of her sad life and then transforming into a black moth, a symbol of death.

The moth has always been a huge symbolic element in literature and is interpreted differently through out the world. The fact that these creatures actually burn themselves to a crisp while playing with the fire, mesmerized by its bright dancing flame, has been a source of inspiration for many a poet. the moth sometimes represents passionate destructive love and at others it could symbolize huge change. Over here I think the moth is a motif that is predicting and maybe even instigating change. The lady on the traing is very attached to her belongings so much so that she could not leave a single thing out when she had to travel. Without them she thinks she might not be able to move on in life, so when she realizes that the train is under attack, instead of saving herself she opts to guard her things. And may be even tries to write a will but can make herself give anything away. It is when she looses it all and runs free of all her baggage she realizes that without those possessions she has nothing to fear.

Wow, 5 years to make this. Incredible. I love the symbolism held throughout the short film, and how it sparks philosophical conversations. I was so lost when watching this but after reading the comments I kind of got it and at the same time I'm still lost

Just my perspective. The woman at the station represents all of us. We carry so much (nonsensical, unnecessary) baggage on our way to somewhere we think we're supposed to be. Life speeds right by us, and we almost never (can) see it coming.The train = life. Everyone on it represents a litte piece of ourselves. The ones we're trapped inside with are the versions of ourselves that scare us most or make us most uncomfortable- we're forced to live with ourselves. Old man=future (still dormant). Little boy=past (we learnt how to survive, hence the book "how to defeat your enemies" or whatever he's reading). 2 men= our yin & yangs so to say (every part of us [i.e. personality, thoughts, character, shadow vs light self, etc.] along with its opposite, hence the black & white chessboard pieces). One or the other wins in our day to day lives, and sometimes life (train) affects the variables. They're above everyone else because they are, ultimately, the highest form o self when in perfect balance. Finally, paedophile Mexican muchacho... j/k. He represents every part of ourselves that we ourselves have ever violated. We've done things; said things; thought things; believed things that made us feel less of ourselves. That's why he is the most despicable, vile and fear-inspiring thing on that entire train.The gases (Green & blue, I think)= our conscientiousness. The green stuff, ironically, makes us see life for what it truly is: there is NOTHING and NOBODY outside of ourselves. We are Universe, Universe is Us. We are One. Like the woman, we keep shifting in and out of consciousness. Because heck, sometimes we forget who we are. The men in black= demons. We never see them, but we're told they exist and are out to get us, so we run. We run for the rest of our lives from nothing that's chasing us at all. "LOL". And we keep running until we're at the end of life (the train). Then we finally begin to understand. Truly understand. But by then it's regrettably late for most. Butterfly = peace. We find our peace and then we embody it.

One of my favorite short films. Love love love this. I go back to it at least twice a year since discovering it, and I feel like I learn or notice something new each time. Good journey Madam Tutli Putli ❤️

Wow, amazing work with her eyes! She looks fake and exaggerated and real all at the same time! Her movements but particularly those eyes really made her very human and relatable! It’s overpowering and makes you really connect to her and her vulnerability. The guy in her cabin was pretty crazy! I loved the whole thing but really can’t get over how human her eyes looked. Like they weren’t soulless. Amazing what you can sculpt and do with a camera. I thought Gumby was brilliant back in the 80s when I was 5 years old! This is another level!

She is carrying a lot of baggage in her life that is holding her back , but she most go forward as life continues on like the train , instead her fears and memories stops her to do so finding herself in a comfort zone then she realizes that is more dangerous staying in the corner of life and being alone . She run for her life and once she decide to run from her fears their is no holding back since she needs to survive her own mind and discover a new live as she opens from her cocoon of baggage and memories . That's my interpretation, but I think is open to a lot of ideas . This is a great short film 👍🏻

I googled; this is a stop motion animation. The creator added composited human eyes to the puppets. Actress Laurie Maher acted out the motions as the protagonist, but only her eyebrows and eyes were ultimately shown in the film.

Notice how the first time she sees the moth she swats it away, she extremely burdened by all of her baggage. Why does she carry all this stuff if it causes her so much pain & fatigue? (Perhaps it's because her baggage is her comfort, the familiar in a world of unfamiliar scary things) The second time she sees the moth banging into the lightbulb she is curious, this is after the train stops, but nothing major has happened yet. The third time she sees the moth, it is almost as if she is seeing hope, perhaps she realizes it has meaning, perhaps finding herself in such a unfamiliar & uncomfortable situation, the moth is the only thing in "the new world" that is somewhat familiar to her , so she finally decides to pay it attention, let it guide her. She was supposed to follow the moth all along, she was just too distracted by all her things, all of the physical objects, the less meaningful things in the end, were holding her down. Once all of the dead weight is shed, like a dove, or better, like a moth she flies away. (Liberation)

I found such a cnnrction between the seven deadly sins. Though not religious i saw a huge correlation between the characthers and each sin. I saw a simmilar comments in the comment section confirming my suspicions. I think it so beautiful how each charcther represents a certin ascpect. The robbers in my opinion represent gluttony while madma tutli putli represents greed. She had more material possesions while the robbers have something that is needed (kidney) but has an excess or no need for it. The other charcthers are easy to figure out. Im a huge short film fan and this is probably one of my favorites so far. Not only is the animation spectacular but the message makes sense through interpretation.

Did anyone else think that she died at the end? And the loss of her things meant that she had to leave all her material things behind? (I know she still had clothes on after but thats not the main point) And i think that the scene where she saw the man's organs being stolen was the last thing she saw before she died. Lol. Idk. Just a theory.

The luggages represent the burden of responsibilities struggle and huge pressure challenges which she has to go through like wind all coming one by one and she is horrified shattered scared still assimilate guts to survive taking all this thing's together where many men plays games above you have bad intentions and she always remain alert and terrified as nobody standing beside she has to stand for all herself....

My ratio tells me from the beginning on of this video: Don‘t burd your life with things you don‘t need. The people she met were there to tell her lessons about greed and the papillon showed her the way to a life without extreme burdens but, between the lines she get warned about the nasty side of life. We don‘t need bad company, we don‘t need wealth and we don‘t need to know all the secrets (about earth& universe) which god hides for our eyes💜💕

My goodness!!!! Great animation!!! I can't explain it, but it looked like the characters each. Had a soul!!! Expressions were SO on point!!!! Amazing work!!!!

Удивительно, что столь не продолжительное приключение создало такое количество интерпретаций. Спасибо авторам за возможность прожить вместе с героями это, пусть и жутковатую, мистическую историю. Поражаюсь мастерству проделанной работы! Как же вам удалось создать её глаза такими живыми? Ведь персонажи выглядят будто созданы кукольником. Или это только видимость. Их движения слишком пластичны и натуральны)))
