Excellent overview of this era of Madden!

Alot less popular, Bill Walsh 95 is the best football game on Genesis, it's a mix of Madden 94 and Madden 95.

I am 37 years old, born in 1987, so when I think about NFL Madden games I think about Madden 92, 95. Those are the games I played the most with my brother as a kid. As I got older, I remember playing Madden 2004 for the PS2

The gfx in Madden 91-93 were SO much better than 94. Looks like a kid drew the 94 sprites.

95 was the best... Gameplay and all. Today's Madden I don't even control defense takes them out of position.

The pre-season mode in 92 disables play clock penalties. 92 and 93 are my jam, they're the perfect mix of arcade and simulation and they're just fun to play. 95 was the one I owned as a kid (I only rented the others) and I love it and consider it the best 16-bit football sim but I prefer the less realistic older titles when I just want to sit down and have fun. Loved that Sega version of the Fox Sports theme though. Great video, in an era where Madden has become somewhat of a joke it's nice to go back and remember the classic installments that built it up in the first place.

I liked Sega Sports better back then. The Joe Montana games, and Prime Time NFL 96 was my favorite. Madden has always been the "other" guy to me.

In this era, I was more of a "Tecmo Super Bowl" person, but I can like the early Madden games too. It think I liked the 1997 game the best.

If I could combine the gameplay/sprites/flow of the first three JMF games, the roster/teams/FOX theme music of 95 (1994 season), and the A.I. of 98, that would be my dream 16-bit NFL game. But whichever ones you had as a kid, those are always the ones that hit the hardest as an adult; the brain trip triggered by the memories and associations easily outweighs the minor differences that were year-to-year. John Madden Football (the first game) is the one I had, and to fire it back up is such a powerful experience I can't put into words. I can be much more objective about SNES games, because I didn't have a SNES.

The older versions with the receiver windows did show how many yards the receiver was down field. It was shown by a little meter on the side of each receiver window.

I wonder if he'd take on the NHL EA games in the near future as well. I remember Madden NFL 95 quite well. My dad bought it for my brother and I, since we were all NFL fans and it still holds up nicely. It even had a fold-in poster of all the teams with a brief synopsis about them and their best key plays. Good stuff!

I always say Madden 95 was the best too even know 94 gets all the praise. Same with NHL was better to me than NHl 94. 96 had fighting and much more back.

It was only a couple years ago that I realized John Madden Football predates TECMO Super Bowl by a year.

Can you do this for the Joe Montana football games? They changed quite a bit from game to game.

The first genesis Madden was almost impossible to use the run game. The second Madden made it too easy to run. The third Madden balanced the run/pass game. To say almost no differences is misleading.

The graphic that cuts in and shows where your receivers are ruin the early titles for me. I guess you can get used to it but there's no way to see what's around them. Thankfully I own 97.

I definitely agree with these reviews. Madden 92 and 97 were my favorites on Genesis. I play the 92 version for Walter Payton (wink, wink) and the Killer Ambulance of Death, and the 97 edition is the most refined and evolved of the era. My interest in the series waned in the following years, and to be honest, I'd rather be playing the NFL 2K series instead. Today, of course, we have no other choice than Madden, which is precisely why the series has stagnated for at least a decade. I prefer the 16-bit era when EA was hungry and fighting for dominance.

Madden '95 SNES is better than Genesis.

VideoGames arent carton of milk or a bottle of wine or a concrete bridge. they arent 'still pretty fun' or still hold up', ect. they are the same game tomorrow as they were last tusday. you either enjoy them or not. they dont suddenly transform into a better or worse game because the calendar page gets flipped. good review but this VideoGames are like a carton of milk bullshít flooding reviews needs to end. and calling evey f..kin thing retro too. (not saying you did)
