I took a flight on a Chinese built airliner, that seems to bear an uncanny resemblance to an airliner you might have seen before...

It felt like a rocket because it was designed to do high temperature high altitude operation in the Tibetan plateau. The plane has very high thrust for its weight class, a bit overpowered for "normal operations".

@@youtubechangemynamewhy this is exactly what COMAC said. They said it's design for plateau operation, so it has a shorten fuselage, more like MD-87 or MD-95 instead of MD-80/83s. Thought this thing do have a bit too fast for its take off speed, 130 knots or so. Not a problem for plateau since you'll need lots of runway and go fast to get enough lift in thin air anyway, but in "normal" condition it could be a little tricky.

02:34 wow! That was a reasonable, logical and sensible response from the staff to your luggage issue! Can’t see the staff of BA or any U.K. airline being so sensible when it comes to luggage issues and what you can/cannot carry on! These guys seemed to understand it would be simpler and less hassle just to let you have an extra bag as a carry on than create all the hassle of offloading your bag at Jakarta! And they didn’t even charge you extra! How refreshing 😂

As a lot of the people here commented, the staff makes a good airline, not the plane. You enjoy friendly service and its makes up for older planes. It just makes the experience of flying so much better. (Note: In Australia we have a little airline called REX, Old planes, simple but the people make it enjoyable to fly)

A bit of a fun fact, the Transnusa we know today is a restructured version of its old version where it usually operated small domestic routes and Charter services using ATRs and old Fokkers. This new Transnusa is a somewhat revamp by a Chinese investment group who has invested in rebuilding them. This group also has ties to Comac, and hence why they operate the ARJ21. Currently they operate ARJ21s and A320s, but I wouldn't be surprised if they will return all A320s to lessors and replace them with C919s.

Unlikely to happen after what happened with Mexico's Interjet and the Sukhoi Superjet. The last thing you want to depend your schedule on is an aircraft with minimal service history and support, especially parts support if Western parts get sanctioned.

Flew with TransNusa many years ago from Floris (Komodo) back to Bali. The plane was fourth-hand or something, with a collection of safety cards, seatbelts and sick bags from multiple airliners. However, the captain absolutely buttered the landing. Big contrast with the Garuda flight to Floris a few days earlier. Afterwards the captain walked out of the flight deck like he was a rock star, recognized by some passengers who make this trip frequently.

Visited Hawaii back in '97 and did a bit of Island hopping on Hawaiians DC 9 50s, which their MD 95s replaced later on. No seats were assigned so I was the guy in the back seated next to the left JT8D-17 while evryone else was up front, if flights weren't very full. Marvelous!

Great video Noel. A flight on the Comac MD-80 !?! Another knock-off but from a very good source. Alot of shops shuttered at that departure airport, but they had a Starbucks !!

I completely understand your desire to fly on rare types. Not quite at the same scale as you Noel but I always try to include a rare aircraft type as part of my hols. Recently went to Spain and couldn't resist flying on the CRJ 1000 (GRX/MAD) as IB are the only carrier using it. Was a fine experience.

When I was in KUL last October, I saw 2 different ARJ21 of Trans Nusa, so they do fly to other airports.

Looks like a great little aircraft. Reminds me of travelling on the Boeing 717 in Thailand, in the early 2000s. Bangkok Airways had a fleet of them, before changing over to Airbus A319s. They also used to take off like a pocket rocket. I also seem to recall that in the 717, there were no windows parallel to the rear engines.

Looks like a great little aircraft! TransNusa could really do with a few A220's but i guess the ARJ is much much cheaper

I did the exact same thing a month ago, once I saw the ARJ is coming to JHB, I took the bus across the border and headed southbound to CGK on it, what an experience, great flight 🤩

Those engine views definitely remind me of an MD80. Specifically, when I was a kid non revving and we always got those seats.

During the 1990s, McDonnell Douglas did a production run of MD-80s in Shanghai factory (at Hongqiao airport). Today, McDD is no more as they are taken by Boeing, and Boeing decided to open another finishing centre, outside of Shanghai in Zhoushan. So this ARJ-21 is not only "knock off" but most probably made using the toolings McDonnell-Douglas left in Shanghai. The wing, the flap actuator is pretty much a blend of Tu-334 / MD-80. It is more like a recycled abandonware, and the probable reason why nobody bothered is maybe because COMAC listed Boeing, GE Aerospace, and some other Russian design buraeaus as "consultants", which mean they got paid somehow. The engine is GE CF-34, the same one powering Embraer E-jets and Bombardier/Mitsubishi CRJs. I don't understand how they are getting the economics on that. Vibrating wings and cabins are typical when speed brakes are opened. The 787 gets unusually loud for a new plane when speedbrakes are deployed mid-air, since it opens quite generoulsy.

They're not getting the economics, simple. COMAC's job with the ARJ-21 is to learn to build a modern aircraft and develop a support network for long-term maintenance requirements. The Chinese airlines were ordered to buy the aircraft, and like previously with the MA-60/600 the Chinese gave them away for free/tie them alongside Chinese capital injections to foreign operators (Usually Indonesian) so as to gain international support experience. It's vitally important as Interjet in Mexico went bust partly because of the lack of support from Sukhoi for the Superjet, and previously Lockheed left their customers high and dry with the L-1011. So manufacturer support (for potentially decades) is essential for airlines to be confident enough to buy their aircraft. The vibrations are likely due to poor aerodynamics design work and/or lack of thorough flight testing, causing aerodynamic buffeting at certain flight regimes. The Chinese aren't as highly rated as the Russians in their aero design. The lessons learnt from the ARJ-21 is now being put into the C919, and the C919 (depending on sanctions, a possible non-starter) will be the basis for their next airliner.

@@Avantime True. Lesson learned: Good maintenance network is everything. That's what Suchoi totally failed at with their Not-so-Superjet. Here in Western Europe, Irish CityJet, the only Western European customer that ever flew the Superjet, also got rid of them quickly - not because it was a bad plane or had poor reliability, it was actually decent in both regards, but because parts and maintenance service was just so bad. Even in Russia, they failed at that - Aeroflot often had half of its Superjet fleet grounded due to poor maintenance and lack of spare parts, and some Russian airlines openly criticized the plane and Suchoi in the media, which doesn't happen often in Russia. That's what the Chinese will now have to get right.

Noel giving his inner aviation geek the free hand...always the best ones. I expect that he is the first one on board if they would start flying C919's also! Co-production with Josh Cahil maybe?

You aren't completely wrong mentioning Soviet influence in the Arj21. The wings are designed by Antonov.
