Dude the SETT pressurised training was stopped around 2008. Currently part 3 (or SMQ Wet as it’s now called) is kind of bastardised due to the availability (or lack thereof!) of platforms at sea. I’m a still serving CPOET(WESM)(TWS) ex Artificer. It’s not these kids fault, we as a service are in dire straights for key watch keeping positions (mainly Cat B aft) and section maintainers FWD (specifically REA) the scheme may not please older submariners but it is a necessity to maintain operational effectiveness and NOT break CASD. Plus I have had the privilege of sitting in on a fast track UGAS interview and can tell you these kids are certainly a cut above what I was at 18-20. They show maturity, intelligence and drive beyond their years (whereas I just cared about going ashore and trapping at that age) they deserve their places on the scheme and best of luck to them.

@@garethc78 Appreciate your straight reply. Nothing can beat that feeling of passing the tank and and getting that book completed at sea and then swigging for your Dolphins. Of course it's not their fault but it can't be the same. As a young sprog trying to pass Pt 3 the experience passed on from a 3 badge qualified AB was like knowledge from The Oracle that would save your life. Do you feel as safe knowing a qualified killick/PO as is the discussion doesn't know half of what the 3 badger has forgotton? As you say it's not their fault but while we may have a CASD it seems we have many qualified but in many ways unqualified mariners manning the ropes?

Yes, I have completed SETT training in the tank, but not the pressurised training as Gareth mentions, as it is no longer part of the training. I have also completed my ‘part 3’ BSQ and earned my dolphins fair and square on a sea going platform. And yes, I also swigged for them at sea in what can only be described as a mug full of rum!

So although some may not agree with the UGAS scheme, it is in place to serve a purpose and any resistance I come across (and there hasn’t been much thus far in my experience) will certainly not deter me from doing my job just as well as the next submariner.....old and bold or otherwise.

Daily Planes Hey buddy, thats a long question but will do my best. Firstly, as a Loggy, during your career, the adverts dont tell you, but little of your career will be at sea. Much of your time will be shore side in a huge variety of affiliated roles, so maybe logs for a base or air squadron, or some sort of personnel/ HR role. A loggy has the most diverse career options of any of the branches which is awesome. Plus we are probably the friendliest less shouty of the branches! So life at sea on a submarine...firstly, its fucking hard. Youll be junior and youll be running the whole dept, whereas on a bigger ship youll be deputy, plus you spend most of your time at sea doing your main role in the control room (think bridge on a ship), navigating, on the periscope or driving the boat itself with a small team (hugely fun part), and when youve fot spare time, actually running your department. Busy doesnt cover it, but its stands you in the best stead for the rest of your career and you belong to an exclusive club of submariners. There used to be a 50% failure rate of loggies it was that hard to manage and quiet lonely professional with massive pressure. As for the day, an ssn is very different to a ssbn which does bugger all but run away and hide. For an ssn, 0615 get up, straight to intelligence brief, 0630 breakfast, 0645 come on watch in control room , 1245 off watch and lunch. 1315, other work, 1500 bed. 1815 get up. Repeat. Basically work teice a day, sleep twice a day. You get used to it. In your off time, you could chill with a movie, but sleep will win! Bascially out of uk say 9mths, a few days alongside every 2 mths. Do het to stay in nice hotels though as cant live onboard alongside (not enouh beds). You run the stores dept ie spares, catering, personnel ie personnel, money, admin and legal and stewards ie hotel sercives for officers. Usually about 20-25 in the team. Yeah, it is worth doing if you want it, but you need to want it. Like on the surface is much easier, so much more time off, zero time doing bridge type stuff, a senior officer to drive you, so much more space, private cabin, space for phys, outside air! But then you get get to wear dolphins for the rest of your life knowing youre better! Hope thats agood summary, but anything else, just ask. Push careers to tell you about non sea stuff as that what youll spend most of your time doing.

@@im.empimp Hi. That confused me, too - King George V was mentioned. However, the last Royal Navy asset to be named such was, I believe, a WW2 battleship. (NB King George V was the present Queen's grandfather). Not many ships are named after people - I am not even sure if anyone bar the top eschalon of the Royal Family has ever had a ship named after them - though there is the shore-base, HMS Raleigh and I think there was / in an HMS Nelson shore base - must check that. Today's person-named ships are HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince-Of-Wales - both new aircraft-carriers. Many RN vessles are named after mythological characters - eg Phoebe, Ajax, Leander - and others with stirring names - eg Victory; Renown; Valient etc. Each iteration - eg Type 23 this or a particular type of submarine - tends to have names starting with the same letter of the alphabet but this is far from a hard-and-fast rule. By the way, we have one of the most technologically-modern navies in the World; one can tell that just by looking at HMS Victory - a "ship of the line" - she is the oldest-serving vessel in any navy in the World. Hardly anyone breaks the 40k barrier in this country. Some plumbers with good enough salary and overtime +private work, slt teachers, doctors, etc. Engineers even struggle to best that

@@bigmyth4558 plus daily extended stay bonuses, 5k for the dolphins, and the boost to a house deposit 50% of your wage at the time (min 10k) and the fact it's a good, (and more importantly) secure, income that is always there unless the government doesn't pay it (lol). Incredible progression too and a good pick of jobs outside in future too

Your out of touch...thats 2k above average salary in the UK. And they pay significantly less for rent, food, ext,ext. Plus add to that paying nothing while on patrol (insurance for cars and things can be frozen) and the money piles up quick

I hope you aren't implying that it was a racial thing. The minimum security requirement to serve on a UK Submarine is a security clearance which needs a British Citizenship for obvious reasons. Other factors are taken into account but race, gender, sexuality, culture are none of them. This would have been explained to you and so you are either negating the truth or simply shit stirring. Neither good.
