Making Lathe MILLING Attachment

Is milling on a lathe possible?
I decided to convince myself and convert my lathe into a milling machine.
Installation of the attachment does not take more than a few minutes, so quite short. I can mill keyways, make longitudinal holes, or mill small areas.
I think that for a hobbyist it can be a good solution, but if you want to mill frequently, buying a milling machine will be a better option.
The vibration turned out to be a problem in my lathe. If I had a lathe that weighed a ton or more, it wouldn't be noticeable.
In general, I think the experiment was successful and I will use this attachment from time to time.

All of your diy jigs / tools are always so well engineered. I've been watching you since you were making your own drill powered lathes in a small garage and I thought, wait till this guy builds up his tools / shop and he'll be the #1 diy jigs /tool guy on KZfaq. Keep it up brother, we need your ingenuity. God bless

Nicely done. It allows some milling at angles that would be difficult any other way. The vibration is from the overhang, just inherent in using the carriage that way. If you could get the center of cutting forces closer to the center of the cross slide it would (probably) reduce the vibrations.

Very well implemented, Good Job👍👍 Steel tends to vibrate easily, so machine beds are made of cast iron to absorb the vibrations. You could fill the connecting tube with sand that might catch some Vinbration. Or you try to make the construction a bit stiffer with some extra steel.

Excellent project. To produce such a video takes skill and time. The clarity of the video and process is excellent. Two observations if I may for viewers watching this video to learn machining operations. 1. Only use a three jaw chuck to hold machined concentric surfaces only! Holding un-machined surfaces ruins the accuracy of the 3 jaw chucks scroll or the back of the jaws scroll. If you have two 3 jaw chucks then paint one a colour for general holding. 2. Welding on a precision machine is not recommended as you can introduce arcing within the precision ball/roller bearings. Having said that you did the right thing in protecting the lathe and had the earth clamp right next to where you are striking the arc. This in no way a criticism as I admire you ingenuity and flair to get the job done. That's why I enjoy your videos. Cheers from down under Amf1

If you are going to do this definitely use some kind of collet chuck to hold the endmill, a 3 jaw chuck is not made for this and probably the cause of a lot of chatter in this setup.
