In this video I reflect on my 5 year IBEW electrician apprenticeship as a fully licensed journeyman electrician. It's been a long journey. And it's been well worth it.

Hey I just wanted to let you know finding your KZfaq channel was the reason I applied for the IBEW. Now that I'm in my second year of apprenticeship I can honestly say this was the best decision I ever made in my life. I will forever be grateful for your prep videos,I honestly don't believe I would've gotten without them. Thank you!🙏🙏

@@Ulfhrim I've been working industrial construction as a non-union apprentice electrician, following my buddy around the country who's a journeyman, for about the past full year. Before that, i did commercial construction for half a year and decided i wanted to become an electrician. What do you say, go union? I graduated from a college prep private high school, so the classwork and studying wont be an issue, and im also used to working 10 and 12 hour shifts. My biggest problem is right now i'm waiting for my pee to get clean. I stopped smoking about a week ago. Thanks in advance.

Fascinating. Have you ever known an apprentice who was horribly injured or sick by the end? I knew a few. It was an amazing experience but 277v lighting jobs were dangerous in a few cases during my years. I can't walk well ever since so I don't do it anymore. Wash your hands well if your running ac/mc before you eat lunch. You don't want stomach cancer and liver problems. Someone's got to say it. Hahaha as for the cold yes it was probably 15 below on sites around cold steel. Some guys had two thermal suits on haha. Got to love it if you want to get through it! My last job was a hospital job. They mostly had my shouldering rmc up five flights of stairs with giant hot air fans on every floor. My back gave out the the rmc came down on my back. Good thing I always, always wore my hardhat. I miss it sometimes but I also miss walking pain free. I'm glad you built connections. I remember an instructor told us to stop working with each other and compete more. It's a competition and dogs eat dogs here he said. I don't even remember what happened to the phone I had, it stopped working. Oh yeah there was some Verizon strike at the time. There was this one apprentice I would of considered a friend. He had a horrible head injury with threaded rod. Some really bad memories of injuries haunt me a little. Good workers all used up. Ok good video, that's my comment.

I think I recognise your story from a Facebook group. Yeah this trade has it's dangers, but about that dog eats dog, I recently joined the union and it's definitely not the philosophy I see, it's more of a help you brother and you re your brother's keeper type of operating.
@ValenceFlux

@@Hitman.13. Did you go through an indentured apprenticeship and have all your hours signed off? because if not you are still in an apprenticeship and not the union which is an entirely separate entity from how things are done according to the last explanation of it to us at the time. They even told our class we had no business going over to the hall for anything other than paying dues and pay pay pay is what I did out the nose and ears haha. I could say I got hazed in some awful ways. They want to recreate and redefine me they can live with me piping up every now and then hahaha. I earned that much cleaning up after some people haha I need to laugh it off haha. I might need a surgery as a result from inflamattion from all the dam hazardous oldwork I removed on some jobs. Was it biphenyls on my skin or 277v through the body that caused my internal inflammation? Doctors can't seem to agree. Never in my life could I of imagined getting horribly sick by the end of my apprenticeship so I got a lot to say about it sometimes. They warned us though that the hazards in this job can alter a person in some ways. I'm just another worker who survived getting used up and lived another day to talk about it. I could also say not having a father seemed to become a BIG DEAL by the end of it for me. Whatever man I braved the bullshit.

23:21 This resonates pretty good with me. I got a technical degree in electricity before I got an apprenticeship, took PLC 1; I've already built PLC cabinets in my first year for leak detection and we haven't even had an actual PLC class in the apprenticeship. If anyone's wondering where to start, I solidly recommend a technical degree, I had 16 weeks of code in my first term alongside theory and a basic math class I tested out of. If you can get into an apprenticeship right out of the gate, do that. For those who don't want to be a CW/trainee for a year, technical degree is a solid choice. Being able to brag about your GPA with a technical degree in an apprenticeship interview via your resume speaks volumes before you've even answered a question. EDIT: Not to forget, doing some sort of schooling will help you determine from the get go if electricity is your thing. 👍

Pre fab is actually cool. For a beginner it'll help you a lot in hand tool usage. Plus you're exposed to the materials and the terminology. I had built thing at the shop that I am now building and installing with good craftsmanship.

Graduated around the same time you did in local 76. Family has 2 other journeyman electricians and I have only worked construction jobs. Going in I knew a little of everything and learned to improve on most of it. The apprenticeship was ok could of been better. Working with Journeyman who have never worked on panels and seemed to have little to no mechanical or fabrication skills. School was exceptionally easy for me. I didn't mind going just wished we had a little more hands on with equipment.

That jman wage for your local is pretty high. Up here in canada jman wage is only low $40s per hour in my ibew lu when I quit last year. Changed unions from ibew to steelworkers union, now I am a maintenance electrician at a sawmill , best decision I ever made

Things a lot different in Texas. Can get an apprecticeship, just by paying like 20 bucks. Can start working in the field, under a journeyman or Master day one. Never have to take classes, unless you or your employer want to. Gain 4k hours, then you can take the Journeyman test. Now having said that, probably is why only one other state takes our license, Lousiana.... Any other state, I'd have to re take the test and maybe other things.

Congratulations on completing your time. Sounds like you have a good system over there. Unfortunately here in the UK you can pay a company to teach you how to pass an exam and do a few days practical work in a class room and call yourself an electrician. Ive watched the demise of our industry over the last 10 years. I have 25 years experience and full apprenticeship. Its a shame as I love my work and the industry I work in and take a lot of pride in what I do.

Hey brother you have some good videos. I always refer new apprentices or young adults looking to get in the trades to your channel to check out your videos. One question I do have, doesn’t your apprenticeship program have rotation? Apprentices should be rotated to different contractors so they get a well rounded education and learning experience. Small contractors and large contractors do stuff differently and do different types of work: commercial, industrial, steel mills, power houses, hospitals, schools, auto plants, etc

@@benjamingarcia1072 recommendation letters from mbers can be helpful if you know anyone that would write you one. see if you can schedule a meeting w/ the training director and ask them how you can be best prepared to answer the questions from the committee and if you need to boost scores which area you need to improve on. If you have already had an interview you may have to be patient and when the time comes re-apply or test. It took almost a year between when I had my interview and I got the call to enter the apprenticeship. There were others that had applied multiple times. I know in my Local right now we have a high application turn out and they only take them for 2 months out of the year. We hope to hire some more instructors when our new training center is complete.
