Rescuing a 4x4 from the Simpson Desert with a Unimog

Graham runs Mt Dare Roadhouse and does a lot of the vehicle rescues from the Simpson Desert, Fortunately for me while I was at Mt Dare he was called out to recover a 4wd that had broken down not far from town. I managed to hop a ride and chat with Graham about what he does with his Unimog.

I got recovered by Graham back before they had the Unimog. I only had front wheel drive (broken rear hub) so he strap towed me in my Troopy with camper trailer into Mt Dare behind their VDJ ute. Something Matt could/should have mentioned somewhere in this series is that you can hire a sat phone from Mt Dare or Birdsville, and you SHOULD if you don't have one yourself. I was about halfway across when I broke down and it cost me $2500 and RACQ paid me back as I was on the only gazetted road, the Rig Road, out in the Simpson.

Good recovery, remember them unimogs when l was in the army can't say l liked them because they are slow.😁😁

Preline pre-filter. Comes with water sensor alarm because most new vehicles lack of space means it's hard to inspect the water bowl.

A pre filter would be the first mod I’d do on any diesel in Australia.

Yes totally agree. Clean fuel is essential for a Diesel engine.

Do you mean a water separator? I would consider that a must when away from civilization.

Yes and go the extra with a water sensor warning light/alarm to drain the water.

@@lowellcrabb151 Yes, the prefilter separates the water. Water being heavier than fuel it then sinks to the bottom of the filter so it can be drained. Some have a glass bowl but they're hard to see in most vehicles with the tight space. So an alarm is the best way to go. For the ones who don't know.
