I never thought Madness's later, "serious" songs (eg Uncle Sam) were any good. "My Girl" and "Embarrassment" were serious song but they were balanced by the fun ones. They had the problem of many successful bands, how to replicate their initial success without being stuck in the past or moving into musical/image territory where they didn't belong.
@eddabbs8690
@eddabbs8690 3 жыл бұрын
I know what you're saying, but I wouldn't say Uncle Sam was a serious song. In fact, I think uncle sam is one of their most underrated songs.... it got their reggae/ska beat back (which had gone missing for a time). "I never knew your name" is one of my favourite of their serious sounds. It's so melancholic and so English. I think, us male of the species anyway, have all been there. Peace ✌

@@eddabbs8690 I agree. Uncle Sam is my favourite. No, wait... it's Yesterday's Men. Ah, no, it's One Step Beyond... No... Night Boat to Cairo... Baggy Trousers... Ah... and a few more to contemplate...

When Suggs said about we could of had couple of years off but they were told if you stop working now you won't work again or when Mike left said when Slade stopped touring America they lost their whole audience.......Come on other bands/artists took very long breaks then came back still having an audience like: Kate Bush, Dire Straits, Janet Jackson, etc
@eddabbs8690
@eddabbs8690 3 жыл бұрын
Sorry I'm two years late with a reply. Madness are not Dire Straights, Kate Bush or Janet Who? though. Are they?
@mikekaraoke
@mikekaraoke 3 жыл бұрын
@@eddabbs8690 Yep you are very late to the party. lol You mean Dire Straits not Straights. 😂 Janet Who?(love your sarcasm) Madness could of still taken a break for a couple of years and come back with a new album and it be a success. But they waited till 1992 to do that as you know. Other stuff you know like Divine Madness was released and peaked at number 1 in the album charts. Madness then announced plans for a reunion concert, Madstock!, which was held at Finsbury Park, London on 8 and 9 August of that year. The original line-up reunited, performing together for the first time since Barson left the band in 1984. Over 75,000 fans attended the weekend festival, and the dancing of the crowd caused some nearby tower blocks to shake perceptibly as they resonated with the frequency of the music! Where you from?

@@mikekaraoke Hi fella, I'm from near to Birmingham England, but have lived in many parts of UK and Europe. I'm now settled in Finland with wife and children. How about you? Madness and the whole 2 tone ska revival came about during my last year in high school. I'd kind of had the initial ska / rocksteady thing first time around through my older brothers and sisters. That and the whole original skinhead reggae vibe (before it became oi and racism infiltrated the whole scene). I was pretty young at the time but the music became ingrained (Dave and Ansil Collins, Harry J All Stars and the like). So I was really into the revival that broke out in 79 and was at the perfect age to live it. I think what Suggs meant, even if he didn't say it, was that the record industry was very different then. As soon as record sales dipped, the labels would put more and more pressure on artists and then drop them very quickly if things didn't improve. So a break would have been out of the question for a band like madness whose appeal had started to wane a bit, and their music, for me, had lost its ska reggae vibe. They came back big time with Madstock and everything that followed and thank god they did. I think by then that nostalgia had entered the equation, and everyone was glad to see them back. Some of their later stuff has been fantastic. Kate Bush has always done what she wanted when she wanted, but she is a genre all of her own. Dire Straits are essentially a blues rock outfit, and that market is very different to the market Madness were operating in. That leaves us with Janet Who? 🤣 Peace ✌

Mmmmm ..I thought Woddy and Bedders weren't consulted and kept out of the loop. And Suggs Kix Chas and Chrissy boy went on to form ther own band . Don't think Woody and Bedders were treated the best. In reality when Barson left Madness completely lost ther way.... In my opinion. Madness are a one entity and now with Chas out ther is a massive whole in the band. All for one one for all. Come on Carl come back home
