It's more about an imbalance in a relationship that is on the verge of failure (which of course can lead to depressive feelings). There's a very interesting video on KZfaq in which Mike Barson explains how the song came about. His girlfriend at the time also has a say.

Trust me, Young People know about Madness and Ska in General. We all have Parents who love their Generation of music and pass it on to their Kids. I Myself grew up on all the classics thanks to my dad (Queen, Madness, Elton, Mike and the Mechanics, E.L.O, ect.) But I still listen to some modern music as it's not all as bad as you probably think. There's some good stuff in there, you gotta be open minded. Every generation has good music and bad music; its just that you only remember the good stuff when a couple decades pass.

Saw them live last night, they were absolutely phenomenal. This song was amazing live, screamed the words so loud ive practically lost my voice. I really thank my teacher for introducing me to Madness, hes an absolutely amazing teacher. Im 12, I only started listening last year, but I'm so damn happy I did. My amazing teacher was doing reading comprehension with us and our task was the lyrics to Baggy Trousers, and that got me and my best friend into them quite quickly. we went home that day, we called each other and just listened to a bunch of their music together and we were both so happy! I ended up going to the concert with her :). Some of the people at my school call me a grandma for listening to them, or make fun of me because its "different" but I dont give a crap because Madness absolutely rule!! I'm really thankful I do have freinds who love madness and that I have people to talk about their amazing music with and that i can share songs with and stuff. This year, my mum got me the The Nutty Boys comic and the vinyl for The Return Of Los Palmas 7 and some other madness stuff for Christmas and I think ive read that comic about 30 times now! Oh, and the other day Chrissy Boy liked one of my twitter posts (it was this ridiculous story i wrote using like 38 madness song references) and honestly to say i was freaking out was an understatement. Im really happy i discovered Madness and two-tone when i did because that genre of music is awesome, and i was feeling really down because my dad was in hospital and me and my mum were doing bad financially, but they brought some well needed joy into my life, from their music videos to their amazing story telling through their songs! its also helped me follow my own little musical journey, and i was very inspired by Woody's drumming and i saved up for a electric drum kit and started playing drums myself! Its one of my favourite things to do now, and since i started playing drums (4 weeks ago) ive learned about 14 madness songs!! i hope to be as good a drummer as woody one day, and ill keep practicing and maybe be in a band myself!! For anyone else feeling out of place just for the music they listen to, remember, dont listen to what anyone has to say, because you are probably cooler than them.

My husband's favourite Madness song😊 We met in 1979. We were 17&18.j Life was sooo easy. All we had to worry about was where these were playing at the weekend and that all our mates were going to see them too. We travelled from S.E London to Camden and Islington by.....Public Transport!! 😲 We all smoked, all got drunk and not one of us went out with more than 15 quid! Funny, cos we never really thought about how we'd get home! We're now 62&63 and still talk about specifics of certain gigs/nights out like it was yesterday. Because it was the early days of a still growing industry. People back then did it for passion, now they do it for fame and money, as a result the industry has become a shadow of its former self.

My girl's mad at me I didn't wanna see the film tonight I found it hard to say She thought I'd had enough of her Why can't she see? She's lovely to me But I like to stay in And watch TV on my own Every now and then My girl's mad at me Been on the telephone for an hour We hardly said a word I tried and tried but I could not be heard Why can't I explain? Why do I feel this pain? 'Cause everything I say She doesn't understand She doesn't realize She takes it all the wrong way My girl's mad at me We argued just the other night I thought we'd got it straight We talked and talked until it was light I thought we'd agreed I thought we'd talked it out Now when I try to speak She says that I don't care She says I'm unaware And now she says I'm weak

Dude, every generation has good and bad music (Sturgeons Law and all), this current one and the 80's are no exception. There's actually so much great music but you're leaving yourself ignorant if you shut out advancing your tastes just because the music is modern. Look beyond pop radio.

Though I love this song, Suggs accent here bothered me after a few years. He doesn't pronounce words like this at all. Then I heard an interview with Suggs and Mike together, the writer of the song. I suddenly realized Suggs was just doing his version of Mike's accent all along, because he was singing his song. Makes me love the song even more.
