Madonna started in the film adaptation of the musical “Evita” where she played the lead role, Eva Peron. The musical and film are about the real life story of the Argentinian political family, the Peron’s, specifically Eva. “Don’t Cry For Me, Argentina” is the most popular song from the musical. Madonna won the Golden Globe for Best Actress for her performance in it. She fought hard for it, even sending the video of “Take A Bow” to the director to show that she was heavily inspired by Eva in that video and was perfect for it.

She fought for the role of Evita for years. Her video for Take a Bow had the look it did for the very reason that she wanted to be seen as that character while trying to land the role of Evita. This video is a clip from the actual movie.

Those who say she can’t act is because they don’t separate Madonna from the role she plays. They only see Madonna. She actually is a great actress, you can tell from her music videos even without the movies.

This is the movie based on the life of Argentinian first Lady Eva Peron , who's husband General Peron became the leader of Argentina in 1946. This was originally a Broadway musical and one of the most aclaimed musicals ever and has won so many awards. Madonna was brilliant in this and should have won an Oscar.. The song "Don't cry for me Argentina" is a classic and known world wide. Eva Peron just like Madonna was looked at either a Saint or a Whore, loved or despised. and she was very popular with the poor and the working class of Argentina ....She is worshipped by many still in Argentina and despised by many as an opportunistic gold digger

She also unofficially ran the ministries of health and labor in her husband's government. Perón became a legendary figure in Argentine politics. She suffered attacks on recordings in Buenos Aires. They protested that they didn't want her to play Eva Peron because of the Erotica era. She was nominated for a Golden Globe and won.

This song is from the musical (operetta) EVITA by Andrew Lloyd Webber. The guy you're wondering about is Jonathan Pryce; the other guy in the crowd is Antonio Banderas. EVITA is one of my favorite musicals by Webber! Madonna did a fantastic job here and won Best Actress from the Golden Globes that year.

In Argentina, Perón is still a very controversial political figure. When they filmed that scene at the actual Casa Rosada in Buenos Aires there was some serious outcry. She deserved a nomination for this role.

Weird neither one of them figured it out or knew before hand, this video was from the musical film EVITA! Or at least figured it was from a film, even if they didn't know what it was. It had nothing to do with Take a Bow or You'll See. But yes, it is a monologue of sorts in musical form. And yes, that was the infamous Jonathon Pryce who played Juan Peron, leader of Argentina in the 40's and 50's. Madonna co-starred, playing his wife, Eva Peron. Fun fact, Madonna submitted Take A Bow video with a long detailed letter to the director of Evita in hopes to score the role of Eva Peron.

this musical "Evita" is based on the real life story of Maria Eva Duarte de Peron "Evita", Spiritual Leader of Argentina and First Lady of Argentina (almost Vice President), but she got cancer and died very young. Her funeral to this day was and still is the largest funeral in the history of the Americas. she was a B grade movie actress, but was also a social climber and fell in love with the right guy Juan Domingo de Peron who became the dictator of Argentina (with her support). this was during the 1940's to early 50's. the Peron's were so loved that to this day most political parties, both left and right in Argentina call themselves "Peronistas".

Really enjoyed your reaction to this and I'm thinking you should try to react to the movie Evita if you get a chance. It is one of the most incredible movies at it is a full musical and Madonna is amazing in it, this is one of the very famous scenes from the movie filmed on the same balcony. The original Eva Peron stood at. I thought so many times in the theater and I cried every time. Absolutely beautiful!

Eva “Evitta” Peron was the second wife to the president of Argentina Juan Peron during the 1946 to 1952 presidential years in Argentina. She was born poor and later married Juan in 1945 and became a leading figure in Argentina history. That presidential term is considered a golden period as the Perons helped the poor in a way that most presidents did not do at the time in Argentina.

Your naïveté was both adorable and painful. I feel so old. Evita (the musical, upon which this film was based) premiered in the US in 1979 & was a massive Broadway hit. I played the Broadway cast album constantly & had the entire musical memorized. Was ecstatic when the Broadway touring company came to Chicago with both Patti Lupone (as Eva) & Mandy Patinkin (as Che). The production was amazing!!! FYI: Madonna’s acting in the film was surprisingly good but she didn’t really have the vocal chops (or range) for the role.

I was in Paris in 1996 - being green haired- I ended up in a Virgin Megastore saw the album snd just bought it, not being aware what kind of music it would be this time or aware that this is a movie soundtrack for Evita?? I thought it would be more of a Bedtime Story/Massive Attack thingy. You guys somehow remind me of the 90s feels so good!!!

Film made in 1996 based on Broadway musical from the 70s about events in Argentina in the 1940s. Specifically Eva Peron (Evita) wife of the president. She died of cancer in her 30s. She was hailed as a Saint by many of the poor working class (from which she came) although others saw her as an opportunistic greedy whore. Madonna, of course, was drawn to this dichotomy as she is often represented in a similar love/hate manner. The entire film is sung with only couple lines of spoken dialog. Ideal format for Madonna, given her talent for masterful, cinematic music videos. After voice training for this film, her singing style was forever altered with a much broader range, greater control and diction.

From the film adaptation of the hugely popular Broadway show "Evita". It's a great movie. Madonna won best actress at that year's Golden Globes for best actress. I was lucky enough to visit Buenos Aires and went to a lot of the filming locations. Evita also won an Oscar for best original song, by Madonna, You Must Love Me. MADONNA FOUGHT SO HARD FOR THIS ROLE. She went through extensive vocal training in order to sing the songs as they were theater songs.

The 'creepy guy' is Antonio Banderas - aka Zorro, aka Desperado, aka Puss in Boots - he plays a character named 'Che' who breaks the fourth wall to tell the audience how corrupt Eva Peron is, while all Madonna's songs reply to his accusations and justify her actions. If you watch the film Banderas is a total scene-stealer, he has an amazing voice and chews up the scenery! (I'd recommend reacting to 'Oh What a Circus' or 'High Flying Adored') He's Eva's antagonist, so he's a little creepy and incredibly cynical; note that as she sings 'you only have to look at me to know that it's true' he walks behind a banner where he can't see her

This song have amazing latin pop dance remixes (you should check them out! - Madonna re-recorded vocals for the remix version of the song). It was #01 on US Dance Charts. On US Hot 100 peaked #08 but it was #01 in Canada and in Eurochart Hot 100 (#01 in France, Spain and other countries - in UK peaked #03.

I love the fact that they didn't guess for a second the whole thing was a excerpt from a movie simply because a lot of Madonna's music videos were so well produced that they literally looked like movies. But also annoyed me to watch this time. A little Google in the end for the "wooow" moment wouldn't kill sometimes

Stunning mastery of history. Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber were masters of telling complex stories in music and lyrics. Jesus Christ Superstar, Phantom of the Opera etc. Madonna was the perfect Evita - and yes Jonathan Pryce CBE, a great British actor played Juan Perón, husband and dictator. Antonio Banderas played Ché Guevara the Argentinian Marxist freedom fighter as Evita's conscience and story narrator (they never actually met). You should watch the movie.

The character of Antonio Banderas is meant to be the criticism of the common laborer. Evita was a labor activist and the wife of Peron.

It has nothing to do with You'll See and Take a Bow ! This was a movie about the life of Eva Peron ! Madonna performed the role of this political woman the man is the actor Antonio Banderas ! Madonna has sang several songs for the movie (You'll see, Don't cry for me Argentina etc..) !
