It's impossible to relate to young people how popular Madonna, Michael and Prince were.

Her moves were simple- double hops, belly forward, hips always going- but she never stops moving. We all danced like Madonna in 1985.

Brad you should listen to Madonna's deeper more introspective stuff. Pop made her famous but her deeper cuts make her a musician/icon.

Madonna's debut album was seemingly an overnight sensation, with many teenage girls back then copying her look as best they could, adding bracelets, tying their hair up like she does there, flashing belly buttons where they could. "Holiday" was the first single of hers that caught my attention, followed by "Lucky Star", then "Borderline", which got the most radio play of them all before she dropped her second album. American Bandstand was a television institution since its debut in the fifties. It ran on Saturday in the late morning. Soul Train came on afterward sometimes. Heh. Scary. I might have watched that performance when it was first broadcast, but it was so long ago I'm not sure. January 1984. If it was super cold outside, maybe, but I was a very active teenager so probably not. Then again. Maybe I saw it on a VHS tape one of the girls in my clique made.

I was one of those girls, the "Madonna Wannabes". I can't tell you the number of times my Daddy sent me back upstairs to either "find the rest of my skirt" or change clothes. He was not happy. 😂

Actually, it wasn’t until her second album and Like A Virgin, that she hit it big, her first album was a singles album, that took a hot minute to catch on. In fact it’s that reason her second album had to be pushed back for release, because her first album gained traction finally.

This iteration of madonna was the one every girl wanted to be like when I was growing up. Girls dressed like her etc It may not seem like anything special now, but it was unique and a whole vibe back then. This performance wasn't great but early madonna is iconic for me - things from her first 2 albums.

I moved to NYC '82 and the Village Voice used to have a page full of street fashion. I remember seeing Madonna on the page on the street dressed in vintage pajamas...This was before she became a star, but she was memorable even then.

Her first tv gig in the states was in December 1982 on a show called Dancing on Air performing her hit Everybody. It's a bit forgotten because most people didn't have cable.

That was the beginning of the Madonna era. She had hit songs just about every year throughout the 80s, and also into the early 90s. She was everywhere for about 10 years.

@@kristianberg4264 Her run in the 80s and early 90s was far bigger than the late 90s onward. Yes she still had some hits in those years, but she wasn't being constantly talked about and in heavy rotation like those first 10+ years.

@@maxxxmodelz4061Her Ray of Light era - late 90’s was massive. Her Music era in 2000 had multiple hits. It wasn’t until the American Live era onwards where the hits kept coming but were more sporadic. Arguably her Confessions era was internationally massive but not quite as dominant in the US, It really wasn’t until 2015’s Rebel Heart & 2019 madame X where her albums failed to produce a top 10 hit. That’s one hell of a run.

@@steven-yu3tu 32 of all her relased singles from 1983 to 1995 were top 40 hits, and she had 7 #1 billboard hits in the 80s. Nothing after 1995 reached this level of success. All of her top 5 biggest selling singles came in the 1980s. Into The Groove, Holiday, Like A Virgin, and Crazy For You.

***LIKE A VIRGIN*** Find the official vid...she/it was sooooo controversial for saying "virgin" and for using name "Madonna" and all of her antics! I was on a school roller skating field trip during a school day when I saw this video for the first time and I was never the same again...still wearing all black and ripped up clothes and too much black eyeliner at 53. ~Gen X Grandma
