If this movie had been a full-fledged Sondheim movie musical, it would have been a classic. Sondheim even knew how to write music for Madonna that showed her at her best as a movie star/actor (usually her weak spot). This song is a great example of what could have been.

@@rev.jasoncook5799Sondheim was a master at writing for voices that weren’t traditional singers. People forget that he wrote “Send in the Clowns” for Glynis Johns, who had a very limited register, and it’s so good that it became a standard.

@@Goland454 That's a classic friend-zone excuse. I'm sure he would love to have a relationship. It's her that brings up the "I don't want to lose the friendship" excuse, which is just a classic "rather than be honest and say I'm not into you, I'll just use this bullshit excuse because I want to keep you on the hook" routine. He's likely only friends with her because he wants to be with her in the first place and instead of putting his foot down and then moving on, he devalues himself and is her "friend" just to keep her around in some capacity. Women don't pursue "friendships" with men. They very rarely become friends with a man unless there is something to be gained. For men they're interested in, they pursue them as such. It's men that pursue "friendships" because they're hoping it'll lead to more. It rarely ever goes from friendship to relationship and if it does, it's because the woman has exhausted other options and comes sauntering back OR because she has been devalued, example being she has kids with somebody else then the guy leaves, and then needs you, the ole trusty "friend" to raise them, so you receive the coveted and very, very rare golden ticket out of the friend-zone and into her britches. These are the exceptions to the friendzone friendship to intimate relationship rule, and honestly even THIS hardly ever happens. Usually once you have been placed in the friendzone you never, ever leave. She doesn't see you as being a sexual being anymore. You basically become a eunuch to her. So again, I'm sure Mr. Combover, if ever given the opportunity, would abandon that "too good to lose" friendship so goddamned quick his head would spin.

@@maticbukovac6966 None other than Stephen Sondheim wrote five original songs for this movie: What Can You Lose (featured here), Live Alone and Like It, Back in Business, More, and Sooner or Later (I Always Get My Man). Arrangement for this song was done by Shirley Walker, the longtime arranger for Danny Elfman, who handled the scoring for this movie. Elfman had previously composed the music for Tim Burton's Batman, with Walker handling arrangement. Walker would later go on to compose the music for Batman: The Animated Series. Burton would go on to adapt Sondheim's Sweeney Todd to film.

Stephen Sondheim died today (11/26/2021) age 91 at his home in New York. My favorite of his songs were two that he composed (words & music) for the soundtrack of the 1991 movie DICK TRACY - released on the one Madonna album I own -- "Breathless." (On casette. Remember those?) “Sooner or Later” won Mr. Sondheim his “Best Original Song” Academy Award. My other favorite from the film was “What Can You Lose.” This one. Not so strong melodically (no matter how many times I hear it I can't hum the tune) but achingly beautiful harmonies and a poignant lyric about “being friends” and not lovers. Thanks for sharing, Scissoryder87. Celebrated elsewhere this night [search] " Great Melody, Great Lyric, Great Rendition, Songwriting Workshop, Harmony Central "

That's Mandy Patinkin - better known to millions as “Inigo Montoya: You killed my father, prepare to die” - in the Princess Bride. Remember? Maybe my favorite six minutes in all of film history: for the sword fight, ending with, "Kill me quickly." "I would as soon destroy a stain glass window, as an 'artist' like yourself. However. Since I can't have you following me either . . . " kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jaqcjcKEvd6Zl3U.html

@@saramunozmunoz I genuinely think this movie doesn't get enough credit. Is it outlandish? Cartoonish? Overblown? Absolutely, but it was also clearly designed to be all of those--it's based off a comic strip, after all. Visually it's stunning, I'm hard pressed to think of another live action movie that comes close to capturing the cartoon aesthetic. The environment design is unparalleled. The music is extremely memorable and phenomenal throughout, and there's some phenomenal performances in it both sincere and hammy. Is it deep? No. But I didn't ask it to be. It's a straightforward detective-and-gangster story and it doesn't need to be anything else.

But what if she goes At least now you have part of her What if she had to choose? Leave it alone Hold it all in Better a bone, don't even begin With so much to win There's too much to lose
