Lady Gaga is my favorite artist and I like that she respects those who came before her so much… she brings that greatness of the 80s and larger than life persona back. Beyoncé is like Diana Ross on steroids and you can see the MJ influence oozing out of her skin. I see them both as the best of the new scene because they learned from the greats and that includes Madonna obviously. Cher, Bowie, Warhol, Elton, etc all of them taught Gaga who her stage persona would be like. And as you said, they grow to be their own unique self.
