I was the costume designer and stylist on set for this video. Super-fun gig. Love to see it coming around again. This was shot on a sound stage in Queens, and directed by James Foley. Yup, THAT James Foley. Madonna's dress has 80 separate pieces sewn together so it would move beautifully, and she could dance without it shifting. No stretch material involved. Yes, that's Debi Mazar and the black girl is Erica, a frequent backup dancer for Madonna. The Latina's name I don't recall, she was someone's cute friend. At the time (1986), Madonna and Sean were very much in love, and an adorable couple.

This was Madonna back in 1986 and she just kept coming out with bigger and better songs over the years. True Blue was a huge it back in 1986 and everyone was into the Madonna craze and she was all over the place. Madonna worked hard to get where she is I have all of her videos on DVD and all of her albums also the one Celebration 40 Yrs of Music and Madonna is now 65 and still performing its insane. I got to see Madonna in 1990 Blonde Ambition World Tour 1990 and I was 12. That was my birthday present to see Madonna live on stage. How cool was that. She puts on quite a show. Madonna was huge in the 80s 90s 2000s and even more so now. She had a heath scare and almost had to cancel her concert. Madonna will always been the queen of pop.

Madonna was so freaking huge back in the 80's without social media and really cable TV. There were plenty of people who didn't have cable TV. All you had was the radio. How big would Madonna have been with all the social media today? She had global fame back in the day. Amazing.

Would be crazy, but I think social media would have sucked the magic right out of all of it! Just like phone zombies do at live performances these days. The hysteria the music artists of the 80s and 90s created was some incredible stuff, Maddona, NKOTB, MJ....we just don't seem to see this anymore. The trending music of today just sucks, and is all about poppin bottles and b!tch£s, plus the market is just over saturated due to the ease of posting wannabe music vids on social media. At least Maddona is still producing! :)

Fun fact, her “True Blue” album still remains one of the best selling albums of all time. Three different songs from the album were number one hits on the US Billboard Hot 100: “Live to Tell”, “Papa Don’t Preach”, and “Open Your Heart”. My mom always told me just how ENORMOUS Madonna was in the 80’s :D And edit for June 2023, the True Blue album got a very positive response because Madonna was more gritty and her voice was stronger or more powerful than before. I personally think True Blue is her best album and her “height” if you will :)

Interesting comment and I never thought of it this way before. In the 60's and 70's everything was still being invented and created for the first time. Spaceships, airplanes, cars, etc. The 80's and 90's were enjoying the fruits of it all. It was the end and culmination of the industrial age and came to a cultural explosion transitioning to the information age. (Class of 1981) What kind of cultural explosion it was I cannot put into words, but Friday nights were high schoolers drinking beer watching MTV and it was all music videos. MTV had just come with cable TV.

Her voice is amazing. She has a distinctive, smooth and expressive vocal timbre, that's why she's my favourite pop singer.

Robert Liguori In those two live performances she has the same timbre that you hear on this song. I doubt they changed her pitch in "Like a Virgin" (album) because she totally sounded like that when she was part of the group "The Breakfast Club". As a "live singer" she's inconstant, at times sounds good and at times average, but I can mention various good live vocal performances (such as Sooner or Later at the Oscars, Little Star at Oprah Winfrey and more) and she actually sings and dances at the same time (Blond Ambition Tour 1990 or the Drowned World Tour 2001, for examples), let's not forget that she's a trained dancer as well. I think that nobody is able to sing "flawlessly" while dancing and I talk about "real dancing".

+Sheels1976 , totally agree, best movies, best music videos, best video games. Mike Tyson's punch out, Zelda II, double dragon are among my favourite games. Macgyver and the wonder years are among my favourite shows, and meatloaf is my favourite artist, he did a lot in the 80s, as well as others like fleetwood mac and the bangles. So yeah their were a few good things in the 90s, but the 80s triumphs, in movies, music, shows and video games. Well that's just my taste, but it looks like their are a few who agree with me.

This song was a big hit but not nearly as some of the other songs released from her platinum + 'True Blue' album: 'Papa Don't Preach', 'Open Your Heart', 'La Isla Bonita' n 'Live to Tell' were all US top 10 hits n even bigger internationally. Madge is far from underrated!
