Honestly the Madonna in this video is the most beautiful I've ever seen her. She is just captivating. And this amazing song....takes me right back to my youth. A simpler and more care-free time. Its 2023 but my heart will always beat in the 80s.

It definitely confirmed I am Hetrosexual 🙂 I can tell you the other dancers are a Black lady who gets one kick completely out of time and Madonna's brother. There again I bought her four track VHS tape back in 1984 so have watched it more than a few times.

This is one of Madonna’s finest vocal performances. The quick octave jumps at “Cupid, please take your aim at me” in the first verse and “so don’t underestimate my point of view” in the second are especially strong. Years later, the training she received for the demands of singing in “Evita” really showed on that soundtrack and later albums. But she’d always been a more effective singer than many critics had given her credit for. The great job she did on “Holiday” is an example.

I've heard vocal stems from some of her True Blue sessions and she has some range and ability to command. Even on the Virgin Tour near the start of her career she could notate damn well for someone performing a dance routine! There were so many four-octave belters in the 80s we began to measure a 'good voice' by sheer intensity and slated Madonna as a triumph of manipulation over talent. Like The Beatles or Bowie, she trumped questions of ability by creative consistency.

I think this is one of Madonna's best songs and videos. She sings and performs so naturally, with confidence without overperformance. The video is also adorable. The melody, harmony, and overall sound of the song combined with the singing make this song just perfect.

@@MagicalCinnamon I continue to Madonna since its inception in 1982, was born a year before it, (I was born in 1957), I am a person with a few years older than you, in those 1980's the music was different, was not required to arrangers, synthesizers, and dressing in an inappropriate way, everything was more natural, and it takes me back to those years when life was more calm and simple, now that Madonna has changed her style and songs over time is something else, I just mean "that "A video clip, which every time I watch and listen to it evokes the most pleasant memories of my youth.

Yeah, her munchkin-like voice is lovely in this song. Reminds me of another, with a similar voice: Jane Weidlin's 88' single Rush Hour. Water theme, too. Interesting. Both great tunes. 👍

Fun facts: she hired a local university swim team. The tails weighed over 75 pounds. They were taken out in a boat and then jumped into the water and were told to swim back to shore. The shots of them were taken at that moment. Madonna was on the beach and in the ocean with the kid. The end shots of her with dried, messy, curly hair was because of the ocean water, it wasn’t styled at all. It’s completely natural and was filmed at the end of the shoot.

Cherish Timeline Cherish was filmed on July 22, 1989 at Paradise Cove Beach in Malibu, California. It marked the first time that late photographer Herb Ritts, one of Madonnas best friends, had crossed over to shooting and directing a music video, which he agreed to do reluctantly at Madonna’s insistence. He quickly became a highly sought-after music video director, winning numerous awards for his work within the medium. Ritts was specialized in black and white photography iincluding photoshoot for Madonna’s True Blue, Like A Prayer and Immaculate Collection albums (among others - the list just goes on and on). On August 21 1989, the music video for Cherish premiered on MTV in the U.S. While Cherish went on to become another hit single, it’s interesting to note that Madonna had previously written an entirely different song using the title Cherish. Her handwritten lyrics for the unreleased track - along with several others that have yet to surface in musical form - turned up at an auction in 2011. When asked if Madonna could predict whether a song would be a hit or not she once replied: I’ve never been a good judge of what things are going to be huge or not. The songs that I think are the most retarded songs I’ve written, like Cherish and Sorry, end up being the biggest hits. Into The Groove is another song I feel retarded singing, but everybody seems to like it.
