My family have lived in Refugee camp in Chiengkham Payao Thailand between 1983 and 1987. We dont have the freedom like you all do. We lived inside barded wire fences and we were treated like criminals. Thai soldiers watched and kicked and beaten my people up like animals. After all the Refugees camps in Thailand had closed down the Thai governments have dugged out all the graves of the Refugees who had died while living in those camps and barried in Thailand and they pulled out the flesh and took all the bones with them. We now live in America and we are US citizens and have lots of freedom and we have lots of money and we can travel anywhere around the world.

It only got better recently in this refugee camp. Thai authorities still abuse their power and even kill and rape refugees.

currently, mae la is an older and bigger camp, so the living situation is pretty good compared to other camps in Thailand. ppl stay inside the camp and fear going out because of the thai border soldiers in other camps. they can beat up refugees with no repercussion, although back then it was probably worse. But ppl are still locked in camp with no source of income bc they fear going out.
