Here's what you won't see about Leonard Bernstein in Maestro, which is on Netflix today. In making the movie all about the way he can show off his directorial flair, Bradley Cooper skips entirely past the Bernstein's activism and the drama around their charity event for Panther 21, raising funds for family support and legal defenses for a group of Black Panther members indiscriminately arrested as terrorists. the media coined the term Radical Chic based on that event. PLEASE pronounce his name right! If you know or care anything at all about Bernstein and if you have seen the movie and if you have paid any attention to the movie, you will know that his worst pet peeve was people who called him "Bern-STEEN". He even bellowed "STEIN! STEIN!" during a public meeting and corrected anyone who called him that. I cannot believe what I am hearing. You never saw it, or if you did, you didn't pay attention.

Sounds like you wish Ava DuVernay directed 😂. While I do agree the camera choice in the argument scene did leave me scratching my head a little, overall I did enjoy the film. I thought it was beautiful and heartbreaking.

I thoroughly enjoyed this film. Kudos to Bradley for having the courage [and commitment] to film it. I would have preferred if more of his private life [his gay encounters and love of Aaron Copland] had been covered as well as his political activism.

You are so wrong. Cranky picky and it did work. It really worked. A masterpiece. So stop picking. Good actors inhabit the characters.

I enjoyed the movie a lot, especially how it moves from the theatric to something more real by the end, but I do think there are some problems when it comes to how they sort of portray him as a character, with it sometimes being a little too simple. Despite that though, I would probably say the coolest thing about the movie is how many things are separated from the story. This isn't a music biopic, and if you were to go into it not knowing what Bernstein did as a musician, you'd still need a lot of extra research, and for me that made it very powerful. I think that's part of why their activism was put aside, because when you leave the music aside and put that in by itself it would clash horribly with everything else.

You can only say so much about any artist's work in 2 hours. Something will be lost. If you didn't find what you expected, then OK. But comparing an actor to a real person is usually always going to come up with the actor's portrayal wanting in some fashion or other. Comparing is pointless. Did Cooper embody the spirit of Bernstein? I think so. Did he help re-awaken interest in Bernstein's work? Absolutely. So many people have dumped all over this performance with their noses in the air and have not done the research to understand the pains Cooper took to get this as correct as possible. I bought him as Bernstein and marveled at the Mahler's 2nd section of the movie. I'm very sorry I bought into the click-bait headline of this video and will forever wish I hadn't but I don't take back one bit of what I've said here or my admiration for Cooper's work in bringing the genius of Leonard Bernstein to a wider, new audience.

I couldn't agree with you more! Bradley Cooper is a genius! He poured his heart and soul into this project for, I think, about 10 years! It's a masterpiece that captures wonderfully certain aspects and parts of his life that I was not aware of. Yes, I watched the Young People's Concerts back in the day! I think he deserves at least one Oscar but Oppenheimer has been sweeping the awards season so I don't think it will happen, sadly. It was a lovely tribute to a fabulous conductor and composer and I thought Bradley Cooper's decision to use Bernstein's music for the score was absolutely on point! I can't wait to watch it again! 💕

You're nuts. It all works for me. Sorry you have preconceived issues you brought to your enjoyment of the movie.

I agree wholeheartedly. So much missing and as a film it took so long to get into. Many of my friends gave up after 10 minutes. I was waiting for the excitement and drama of the genius but it didnt really come although there were a few good musical moments. We didnt see him composing apart from jumping out with the written mass in his hands.....all very superficial...I suppose Cooper wanted an Oscar and he will probably get it. Such a wasted opportunity. I would not recommend the film...watch his tutorials on You Tube they are brilliant and give you the essence of the musical genius and gigantic human being that was Bernstein.

A completely soulless film about an incredibly soulful man.

Completely disagree. The movie was bursting with soul, soul is pounding on every line of dialogue, right from that first scene. In fact, if you could fault the film at all, I think you could say it was perhaps a hair too soulful. But only that, if even that.
