Interesting to see Sokolov in less than ideal circumstances: weird aquarium-like hall, paparazzi, garish lighting, stunted acoustics, out-of-tune piano... and yet as soon as he sits down, interiorizes, commits himself to it, starts to play: everything is transformed, nothing is merely of this earth anymore... the sublime made palpable for two minutes, once again.

美しい円なトリルと、ショパンの陰鬱とした絶望感のようなイメージが、マズルカとなって耳を伝い心に染みてくる。ソコロフというピアニストは凄い。

For all its admirable pianism this trill-obsessed rendition of Chopin’s mazurka op. 68 no. 2 misses the mark, in my opinion. This hardly feels like a “lively triple-meter polish dance” to my ears and more like a beautiful walk in the park. But the trills, and Sokolov’s general control, are truly impressive. For a more dance-like version of this mazurka, try this: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/lbqDnNFqsMvQlp8.html In my opinion, that’s the spirit!

@@ChopinIsMyBestFriend Agreed. But for all its beauty, I still find Sokolov’s interpretation a bit static. There are other ways to do it.
@ChopinIsMyBestFriend

@@henridam well i’d say that you shouldn’t play it exactly the same every time. chopin didn’t. and i’m sure sokolov has been playing that piece for decades and has entertained the more dance like interpretation. that day happened to be that one. I enjoy both.

@@ChopinIsMyBestFriend I agree with the idea of variety of interpretation. For some reason, Sokolov doesn't strike me as an "instinctive" interpreter. On the contrary, he seems to carefully calculate every detail of his performance and, when a passage repeats, he plays it exactly the same way every time. No place for spontaneity here. He's the Meryl Streep of piano playing: admirable but not moving. Like her, every move is perfectly planned and executed. And the result is you're more impressed than genuinely moved. Now, I know that a lot of people will disagree with me about Meryl Streep (and, undoubtedly, about Sokolov). And that's ok.

@@henridam I don’t think you know what you’re talking about. The example you gave plays it the same every time. When I started playing this piece i instinctively played it the way your example plays it. like a mazurka. but when i feel like it i like to slow it down. I think sokolov wanted to squeeze more out of it. If you know anything about piano you’d know grigory sokolov is one of the best pianists alive. You seem to like to criticize. Understand he’s far beyond anything you know and has been there done that. Just enjoy the interpretation.
