"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
“Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on KZfaq. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on KZfaq, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode.

The transgender point. I transitioned as an adult (mid 20's) and I had some hoops to go through as an adult, let alone a child... I was informed along the way that if I was a minor, it would be rougher... Had to get a psych eval with a licensed professional to prove I had gender dysphoria. I had to be medically informed of what going onto Testosterone would do to me and my body. I was told I had a waiting period of a month to decide if I wanted to harvest eggs before getting on Testosterone because I would become infertile afterward. I had to sign a waiver that I understand the changes I was signing up for. And even now, I need to keep having appointments with an endocrinologist twice a year with bloodwork and testing to monitor various levels that can be signals for bigger issues because of HRT. And my state was one of the ones that has *less* restrictions on starting this process... and this isn't even for surgery. This was just to *start hormone replacement therapy*. Not the "mutilation" surgeries the right is claiming occurs when you're a teen. These surgeries for children does not occur just because they are trans. There might be some server medical issues that require surgeries that do the same thing (think cancer causing the removal of breast tissue or other reproductive organs, for example). But these things aren't happening just because a child thinks they are transgender alone. Even as a trans person, I don't think HRT should occur before 16 and surgeries not before 18. Hormone blockers can help kids have more time to make an informed and matured decision and reduce dysphoria-related distresses at younger ages, should the child decide to take those. I think most people would think these are pretty fair standards (unless you're a nutjob that thinks they shouldn't happen ever... those people are unreasonable, heartless and can't be swayed no matter what you tell them). Edit: I do think safeguards are necessary though. It helps guide someone to make the right decisions by informing them as much as possible. So, while they can be a slog to trudge through, I think it is a necessary step to prevent regret and de-transition which can make the person's life worse afterward.

Thank you for sharing your experience! While I personally think that most places have reasonable procedures and protocols, there seem to be people believing that trans kids can get top surgeries, for example in the liberal vs conservative trans debate on Jubilee. May I ask if there is a way to discern what is the best practice to support a trans kid? I can see having loads of conversations with their psychiatrist, but I’ve had my share of awful mental health providers so sometimes I’m not sure how much I trust what they say. (One example, a psychiatrist once told me that a person with autism cannot get a PhD.)

@DarkusZarvix
@DarkusZarvix 5 ай бұрын
@@sounddilemma6474 I'm going to suggest some less expensive, or even free, things to consider. Every trans person is different so what works for (or would have helped) me as a kid might not work for everyone. The cheapest and easiest thing that helped me growing up, before I came to the realization that transgenderism existed and I fit better there, was to be heard and not judged. Their feelings often times get bottled up because they are confused about their feelings and about themselves foundationally. That's already something ordinary teenagers are trying to work out, let alone also grappling with being trans. Those feelings of not belonging anywhere kept me from making friends in school or being authentic with others. It made me fear attention out of fear of my "secret" being outed. It made me feel exiled because I was too masculine for the girls to connect with them but because I appeared feminine, I didn't fit with the guys either. So, I felt stuck in the middle. I grew up in a small school (only 67 in my graduating class) so, there weren't tons of people to make friends with overall. First, let them know you love them no matter what gender they are or name they go by and that you're proud of them. Let them know you got their back if people don't agree with their choice of gender. It's easy for parents to assume the kid knows these things. I was a kid that always wanted my parent's approval. Being a different gender might break with who they "approved" of me being and might not love me anymore, so I kept the feelings to myself because I favored their pride, acceptance and love of me more than I valued my own self-happiness. Looking back, I should have known they'd love me no matter what but, there's always that fear or rejection. Sometimes you need to tell them straight up that you love them and accept them no matter what, and stick by it. Secondly, ask them perhaps about going by a different name/pronoun, if they don't already go by one. Using a different name socially can give them a taste of what living like what they feel might be their preferred reality. See if they'd be interested in trying some new clothes that more align with their preferred gender. Get a haircut, new wardrobe, new bedroom decor (finances permitting). Non-medical, and non-permanent steps can help the child "go for a test drive", so to speak. It's amazing how much the little things ease the discomfort. See if there's some trans support groups or programs in your area. With transgenderism being more accepted in some areas, there might be groups that help with some of these steps. If the child can hang out with people like them, it can help them feel more normal and make friends without feeling judged. There might be some programs that help with other things that might get pricy. I know of some groups that assist female-to-male trans people with binders to reduce their chest size, for example. For those who are already out as trans, many of the same overall points apply. Definitely ask them how they are feeling occasionally, if there's anything they want to try out to maybe help them feel more comfortable. Take the baby steps with them, if they're comfortable with that. There's some things you can't control, of course, and that might need explaining to them, as hard as it might be. You might even need to do some research yourself and propose ideas to them and see what they think. Many say that even after being out as trans that seeing a therapist helps. (I personally didn't need to but, I think I might be an exception to this case). Especially if you've already had bad encounters with a therapist or psychiatrist, you don't need to take that step. If you do go that route, make sure they are one that has experience with trans-related topics or LGBT topics in general. If the kid doesn't like them after a session or a couple sessions, try someone else if possible. Sometimes they just don't "click", especially if trust is a tough thing to earn for you or them. Appointments over the internet might help widen the possible therapists to talk to and make them more comfortable in doing it from the safety of their house. Above all, make them comfortable in whatever ways you're able. They will never be 100% comfortable (even with every hormone or surgery in the world) but every little bit helps. Your relationship to the child matters too. If you aren't their direct parent, some of these points might cross some lines but, letting them know you got their back and love them still applies. Advocate for them where appropriate. Family accepting them still lets them know that, even if their direct parent kicks them out, they know you are a backup for them and that gives safety and comfort.

For the first guy, I don't think Jesus and Trump should be used in the same sentence. That is the very definition of blasphemy. But not surprising. Many people, Left or Right, see their religion through their political/social views and try to interpret their Holy Books based on that. However, it takes a lot of stretching and twisting to make Trump sound like he's a follower of Jesus. I mean you basically need to chuck out the entire New Testament and rewrite the whole thing and cherry pick the smallest verse and twist them to suit your purposes. Jesus was a liberal of his time. Its as simple as that. The people he was against were the conservative, Roman backed establishment. But people don't study the context of his times to understand that or, something I hate even more, they focus on his death and the salvation he supposedly gave them, all the while ignoring the MESSAGE he taught while he was alive. Look, I have no problem if someone believes in the literal resurrection story, Jesus being God in the flesh and died for our sins. That's cool, I disagree but if that's what you believe and it makes you happy that's awesome, but c'mon. C'MON. Don't ignore the fundamentals of his teachings. He had some wonderful things to say about HELPING OTHERS AND THOSE LESS FORTUNATE. People need to get back to that honestly, whatever your religion or lack thereof, we need to get back to helping people, instead of trying to divide ourselves further and hating one another based off ridiculous shit. I mean I've seen Christians hate on atheists because they're atheists. I've seen atheists hate Christians and others for believing in God or Gods. Its all so pointless when you really think about it. Sure, I don't mind if someone thinks I'm stupid for believing in, to them, an imaginary thing, that's OK, you're allowed to think that way about me or any other Theist, but putting aside that one thing about me, why treat a Theist badly? The same thing for Theists who hate atheists. Why? So they don't believe like you do, who cares? And the list goes on and on. People hating each other for such arbitrary things such as what God they believe in or don't believe in. Who they're attracted to, or what they identify as gender wise. Its all so pointless and I don't see the reason for it. I know this is how humans are, but my Gods. Surely it can't be that hard just to agree to disagree and focus on what we have in common rather than what we differ on? Maybe I'm a fool, I don't know, but its depressing.
@sylverscale
@sylverscale 5 ай бұрын
Atheist (or more likely antitheists) hating on religion is usually because it's (some part of the religious crowd) trying to push their values on everyone. I could not care less about what anyone believes as long as they don't take away another person's freedom (of course freedom being limited to mean to be free to do what you wish as long as you don't harm another or limit their freedom, roughly summarized). If everyone would go love and let live, and help each other in times of need, the world would be so much better.

I've given up on these people. They don't even read their f*ing book! They want someone who'll give them what they want and then say it's in the Bible as an appeal to authority. They couldn't care less about "finding Jesus", since that would usually mean they'd find themselves to be pharisees.
