In this videoI use the new MagBox Pro 42 Octa from MagMod for the first time - and wow, it is amazing!
As it is a large Octabox softbox, the soft light which it provides is just fantastic and is perfect for wedding day portrait photography. As with all MagMod products it is extremely quick and easy to use. This is a softbox, that when used with the MagRing and MagShoe 2, can be set up in under a minute, which makes is such an amazing solution if you want the best light for your portraits.
In this video I show you how to set up the MagBox Pro 42 Octa and take you behind the scenes on a shoot where I use it for the very first time.
All the photographs in this video were taken with my Sony A9 and I used the Sony 85mm 1.8 and Canon 50mm 1.2 lenses.

Another great review Neil. Love the way the cover comes out and you can zip it up and the grid looks good also. Made me itch just watching that with all the midges biting you both 😆 - what a fun shoot 👌🏼outtakes were well funny 🤣

11:31 Thanks a lot. I wish this video came out a week ago. I was on the fence on buying the RF 50mm1.2 vs the RF 28-70mm 2.0. Although I didn’t like the weight of the RF 28-70mm 2.0 I ended up purchasing it for its versatility. Maybe after I sell my Canon DSLR’s I’ll purchase the RF 50mm 1.2.

Don't worry - the Canon 50mm 1.2 I am using is the 10 year old USM version. It has fringing issues but I love how it allows flare

I believe that there is an adapter which would allow you to use the AD300 Pro? Maybe worth looking in to - perhaps a question to ask in the MagMod Community?

nice review and shooting. if we already have magbox kit with soft diffuser,... what do we need to buy ? in studio i was very disapointed with the tiny modeling light of ad200pro through the soft diffuser. So i purchased the magring bowens and use magbox 65cm on ad400pro. amazing ! should this new umbrella fit ad400pro too ? no need new magshoe 2. By the way magmod should have thought about that weakness of magshoe when they developed it because 85cm and above umbrella were mentioned few years ago already. In same idea, i am still struggling to extend the magrip on ad200 pro, V860ii and V1. I have the feeling rubber, much smaller than these big flashes heads, has become stronger than initially. It should be expanded by 2cm ! Once attached i don't remove anymore.

Hi Marc, thank you very much. Personally I do think the light quality is better out of the MagBox Pro 42 than the original MagBox - which is to be expected because the light source is so much bigger. But whether it is worth upgrading to from the original MagBox is a more personal decision and depends on how you work. I will have some comparison videos coming out in the future which may help you with that decision.

10:32 I’m curious about that set up. You’re using 2 lights. One seems to have an OCT gel and the other is a speedlight. I would love a link to that video or an explanation. Thank you in advance.

Aah yes, I was having problems with my speedlights in that location for some reason - only one of them was on as one of them wasn't firing - I think the batteries needed charging. You can find that video 2 vides back on my channel :)

I place the softbox in the same way just as I get some hard shadows, very black under my neck, I have to lower it a lot but then the light doesn't shine well. I don't do as well as yours, I don't know what to do exactly, I mean in the clip it seems simple, when you do you don't succeed.

Hi Neil just looked at the Kickstarter for these products, I cannot understand why the mag shoe on wex us £60 plus yet the mag shoe 2 is coming up at £39 roughly converted. Anyway great video once again, your models must love you; quite funny hearing you apologies for the midges.

Thank you very much Josh! You can access high speed sync on the trigger by selecting the HSS option - you can then shoot at any shutter speed 😊

Yes you can - you would just need to make sure you also had a Maggrip for your speedlight, Magshoe 2 and the MagRing

Was thinking of buying this but then read a whole bunch of bad reviews on B&H complaining that the magnets weren't strong enough to keep it secured to the MagRing at all times, even indoors. Are you aware of this being an issue and if so, do you know is this has been resolved with the MagRing 2?

Hi, I have literally never experienced any issues with the magnets not being strong enough with any MagMod products - the modifiers and the MagBoxes. Not even close. Once the MagBox is attached it feels absolutely rock solid to me

what a laugh... great review of the kit but, honestly, if you are going to demo/teach, for goodness sake get the basics of using your kit correct! Ever heard of turning your camera into portrait orientation and for goodness sake turn your lens hood around! A lot of the shots are lovely in landscape... but ALL of them? 🤔 edit... oh wait! 12.20... those portrait shots are lovely... bummer... you went back to landscape! But really, lovely vid regarding the Magbox kit.

Haha, I can't work out if you are angry or pleased with the video 😆out of interest, why do you think I should turn the lens hood around? I'm curious - because I can tell you why I purposely don't 😉

@@NeilRedfern 😂 no never angry, but many probably think that I am! 😉 The lens hood is a really important bit of kit and so often I see so called professionals with their lens hoods turned backwards. My guess is that you specially did not have it turned around so that you could induce even more lens flare in those particular photos. This I accept wholly, but there really is no other reason to turn the lens hood backwards. After almost 40 years of taking photos, and mostly professionally, I know of no other reason why one might turn the lens hood backwards... well other than the fact that most simply forget to turn their lens hood around! Judging by the way you handle your camera and in particular how you press (actually jab) at the shutter button my suspicion is that lens flare inducing technique were not actually at the forefront of your mind at the time. 😉 The lens hood firstly protects the lens and secondly helps enourmously to cut down on lens flare. The deeper the lens hood the more clarity of an image (less flare is induced). It matters not what lens you might be using but wide angle lenses suffer more from flare than do telephoto lenses and this is mostly due to the deeper lens hoods used with the latter. There are other technical reasons though. One can of course be as creative as one wishes but the fact remains that a lens hood should, as a matter of course, always be used. I don't think that you will ever find me not using one... I would feel the tool in my hand somewhat exposed otherwise!! It was still a good vid none the less. Well presented and interesting. There was certainly quite a lot of 'bitingly' interesting moments that is for sure!

Aah that's good, I don't want to leave anyone feeling angry 😂 thank you for the comment - everyone is different but I never use lens hoods for a few reason. In fact I don't have them for most of my lenses. Firstly I like flare so always want to increase my chances of getting flare, I also love to shoot through objects which I place very close to my lens - sometimes practically touching my lens, and a lens hood would prevent my from doing that. Also, I shoot weddings in a very documentary way and because of that I want my equipment to be as small as possible and using a lens hood makes the lens physically bigger which is the opposite of what I want. It's important to remember that we all shoot differently and just because you think it's right to use a lens hood doesn't mean that it is for everyone :)
