I saw 2 playing a game similar to checkers or chess in the sand with nuts or something as game pieces...they were so happy & having so much fun!!! It's because unlike USA we don't get precut , treated and packaged meat which is ready to cook but instead we buy meat from the butchers who sell meat in the market. They cut it in front of you and according to your preference. So we have to wash thoroughly before consuming.

It’s also a cultural thing. There are people in the US who wash their meat. It used to be the standard everywhere until it was discovered to contribute to food born illnesses and cross contamination, but some people still swear by it and believe the opposite.

In India, prepackaged meat is frowned upon. Most meat is available at you nearest butcher, which wouldn't be much farther than a block from your own house. And freshly cut meat has blood on it, which butchers won't wash themselves because of bacterial reasons and how quickly can it develop before you carry it home. Instead, washing the meat a just before you start your cooking process is the norm.

You wash meat that isn't certified as sanitary since most nasty things are on the surface due to handling. Grandpa's method is much better than nothing as long as the water is clean.
