Hurray for 2K subscribers! I’ve just bought Hamnet and can’t wait to read it - I heard Maggie O’Farrell’s interview on Desert Island Discs and it was really lovely 😊

Great video! I love the advice she gives about stories being like water, its shape is unique. Music doesn't always help me when I write, it can be distracting. So when I need new inspiration I look at art and landscape photos ❤. I too agonize over grammar 🤣 but my editor is amazing. Congrats on the 2k!

Your reflections in this video were super soothing for my writing anxiety. Thank you so much Kieren! Especially the note on it being okay when the writing takes shape in ways I hadn't anticipated.

I’m so glad it was useful! ☺️ I tend to get frustrated when things don’t turn out exactly how I wanted, but then most of the writing I’m really happiest with came from an accident or from outside of my plans!

You could probably do a video just on how people use music when they write. Something like what you did on font preferences. I seem to remember Douglas Adams said he wanted to listen to music while writing but found it too distracting and I tend to fall that way, at least during the first draft.

As a general rule I like it, especially instrumental stuff, though I do have periods where I can't concentrate either 🙂

Thanks Joey! 🙂 I always find these authors can add something to an aspect of writing, even if it's something that's been covered a lot.

If i'm not quite happy with a sentence I just use the grey highligher on word, so I can fix it later.

Love Maggie O'Farrell and she is notorious for rewriting/editing, but I really hope she was exaggerating when she said 30/40/50 times! Admittedly I edit A LOT for micros, but a whole novel...!

I don’t think I could stand more than about three drafts or a novel 😂 editing is not my favourite, but I do love tweaking the wording of short stuff until it fits properly.

@@KierenWestwoodWriting There's a difference between editing and tweaking, isn't there? I do ENDLESS tweaking with my micros too.

@@laurabesley7095 Yeah there is I think. I will make amendments and then change them back the next day, it never ends. I’m thinking about printing hard copies of stories just to call them ‘finished’ 😂

@@KierenWestwoodWriting I do that! Once they're 'finished' they get printed off and put in a file. Sense of achievement, etc.
