Flystrike is a major danger for sheep at this time of year and is why shearing is so important. We only shear for the animal welfare here in the UK.
There is no profit in wool in the UK, for the farmer anyway....

ABOUT ME
I’m 32 years old and I’m a sheep farmer from Ayrshire in South West Scotland, which is why I have such a strong accent! I was born and raised on a sheep farm watching my dad who was the shepherd.
At 18 I went away from farming to work in the city (something I still do) and at 23 (2013) I decided I wanted to do something for some extra money so I went on a sheep shearing course. The hardest thing I’ll ever do was learning to shear sheep. [shudders thinking about it]
I shore whilst on my holidays from work for 2 years and then in 2015 my dad died so I decided to get my own sheep so I could continue working with sheep as it was something I loved doing. From there it escalated quickly from my first 4 sheep in my mum’s garden to now running around 850 breeding ewes.
I shore over 19,000 sheep this season in the UK and have my own shearing run which lets you see many different farms in the summer months.
A few years ago I bought myself a sheep pregnancy scanner and have been building up my run since then.
I watched a few farm vlogs on KZfaq and decided I could have a go and now here we are!
Thanks for watching my videos and please subscribe if you want to see more in future.

My 17 year old had a dr appointment today. On the way home he pulled up KZfaq on my phone and this was my top video. He said “how can you watch maggots on sheep? Are all the videos that gross?” I have to now find the perfect Cammy video to get that out of his head and change his opinion. Normally he’d use his own phone, but his battery died at the dr office. I found it educational and informative. It shows the reason behind the spray treatment the sheep get. Ty for keeping it real.

I think the one of him helping herd sheep in Wales is one of my favourites, mainly for the scenery. A close second would be doing the same on one of the islands. :) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/r99ho9OAvNWch2g.html

Funny how the sheep could read Slow on the road. I know some people will be upset but thank you for showing/covering fly strike. It is something farmers battle seasonally. Showing how the fly strike has spread closer to the skin was educational. Thanks for not showing a horrific case. Well done CammyBTW we had a sheepdog who could cut out a fly blown sheep from large mobs of sheep from just the instruction ‘Flies Floss”. What a did.

Brilliant photo of everyone ❤ Had difficulty seeing the muscles Cammy, must have been the sun's glare of that porcelain white skin 😂. I am so happy it's shearing time again.... I never knew that fly strike could happen anywhere on the sheep, only place I have ever seen it is around the tail area... learning something new all the time here. Thanks again for sharing your lives with us ❤

Well spotted and treated Cammy. Also to publish what, and how easy fly strike can infect a ewe, in what we know to be a well cared for flock, deserves a big thumbs up 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻!!! It is so disappointing that there is no return for the farmer on their wool. In a world where recycling is evident everywhere, natural resources are being used in more and more industries, why haven't we got the technology or strategy to use wool in more ways other than what we do now - maybe it's just me having a rant!- (Sorry!) Thanks Cammy, it was great seeing the Team!, and wee Jock!!

Amazing and horrifying, isn't it? One of our lambs a few years ago had almost her entire left side covered in maggots. The flesh underneath felt like old jerky. Apparently, the smell was horrendous, too. (I couldn't tell because I very nearly have no sense of smell.) My sister and brother-in-law kept doubling over and dry heaving, so I ended up taking over until all the maggots were gone. Had to reach into an inch deep hole with a pair of tweezers that my sister decided to throw away rather than clean.

Cammy if you have a sheep that has been fly struck do you record that in your app or not bother? Just thought it might be interesting to track if any particular sheep or breed is more prone to it than others, then you and Lizzy can take counter measures like dosing early or selling.

Yes they are. Whether it is smell of particular sheep. Put out fly traps. Shear early. Dips and topical poisons, only encourage fly resisstance. Self shedding sheep help. Clip area, fly spray the maggots, scrap them off: repeat; then wet atea whit solution of stock iodine diluted 1 part to 4 parts water. If mayor penetrating a followup check is needed and application of savlon on wound (chlorohexadine kill maggots ). Early treatment is best.

This year when I banded the lamb tails and bits I had a ram that only needed tail docked. I got the band on and set him down and he took a few steps, threw his head up and back dramatically and then let himself fall flat onto his side into the hay as if he swooned and passed out. When no one noticed he stood up and took a few steps, baaah’d twice and repeated the spectacle! He did this three times until all the ewes came up and made a fuss over him. We called him ‘Endeavor’…he is absolutely perfect for breeding into our rare breed flock.

I've seen this before and it's the stuff of nightmares - being eaten alive. You've shown us what to look for and in an ideal world you would have treated to prevent it, as you are about to do here, BUT, when you have 'missed' or overlooked an unfortunate ewe or lamb and you find a case such as this - or God forbid - worse - how do you treat that? You shear this ewe following the spread of them under the fleece and then what? Should she be completely shorn? How do you kill what's there? Do you apply any topical pesticide or antibiotic to the skin? Is she going to be warm enough completely shorn, or do you just shear the affected area with some margin to make sure she's clear (personally, I'd be worried I missed some - but I'm an armchair Shepard, and have only helped treated a foal that someone shot in one of our back pastures and that wound, full of maggots, the shedding, rotting... you get the picture - she was brought into the barn to treat and it took months of daily attention to close what had become a 10" gap in her skin covering her stifle joint - she did make a full recovery and became a treasured riding mount... but back to this ewe - should you do anything else to treat this beyond what was filmed?

Not going to lie, I so prefer Scottish music over Bo the Drifter. Fly strike is such a dilemma, especially when you get wet but warm weather. The sheep are so relieved when you shear it away. Just curious, why you don't shear all your sheep now?

For the maggoty sheep, do you shear only around the infected area or do you do the entire sheep? Is the short wool recovered or is it disposed of?

Its only necessary to remove wool from the affected area plus a good margin to ensure you haven't missed any strike. With merino wool it is possible to sell wool from the struck area but it is not worth very much (because of the extra scouring costs I assume) so often it ends up as garden mulch!

Great video but I'm a bit confused, its a Good Morning Sheep Fans but it looks look the sheep are coming in the later afternoon?

Heh Cammy...can you tell us about the puppies? I haven't seen a video of them since they were born, or have I missed something!

I'm also curious. There was a really small bit in one of the videos saying they would keep one if there were any females but that's the last I heard of it.
