You're right - they didn't get into Kareem vs Magic but neither did they get into Pistol Pete vs Bird. Still an incredible documentary. Thank you for doing this!

Good job. This is what sports were supposed to be like for the future. Play hard, play the right way, and let the chips fall where they may. These 2 could do anything on the basketball court and they were relatable people. That’s why people loved them.

Rusell retired in 69' and Moncrief was an 80s player. My top 10 in the 70s no order: 1. Kareem 2. Bob McAdoo 3. Tiny Archibald 4. Elvin Hayes 6. Bill Walton 7. John Havlicek 8. Dr. J 9. Goerge Gervin 10. David Thompson. HONORABLE MENTIONS : Wes Unseld, Bob Lanier

Well, I'm thinking of college, he played for our Razorbacks in the 70's. We had some great players 75-80 who went on to play NBA. I loved watching him.

@2:39 Bryant Gumbel makes a VERY GOOD POINT HERE. With the ABA merger, We began to see a more “street” style of play which tends to focus on the INDIVIDUAL rather than the TEAM…. IMO, the White players were more TEAM oriented while the Black players were more about PERSONAL GLORY (stats & showmanship). Speaking for myself, I prefer the TEAM approach. I like to see unselfish play. I admire that about Larry most of all-he elevated the whole TEAM! Contrast that with Michael Jordan, (a known Ballhog) and you see, from his early years especially, the big difference in results. When players forget it’s a TEAM game, it ruins it for everybody. My 2‪¢‬

And it's true. I've noticed that reactors never "react" to that bit of info from Gumbel and Cooper. It holds true for what the league has become. IMO

Larry and Irving saved the NBA together. They played the game the right way, they played team ball and played to win

No soft points back in the day. We grew up hard and we fought hard. You didn't shoot someone from a car, you put up your hands. One on one. Larry and Magic saved the game because of great talent and a great rivalry. People were sick of the drugs.

31:30 I'm still surprised to this day that the documentary didn't immediately point out that the Laker's coach was white, and the Celtic's was black

@4:48 kudos to Cornbread for stating a painful truth. Tbh, from comments I’ve heard black players make (including Magic!) this is a universally held belief among black players (& black fans) from that time to this day.

There were times punches were thrown, for no call. It was a different world. And it was probably too physical and violent. But I would love what math calls a “regression to the mean”. “Hick from Frenchlick” RAW.

I believe it hurt Magic's chance at Rookie of the Year because he was at the disadvantage of going to a loaded team (Kareem) whereas Larry helped a bottom-of-the-barrel team more than double their wins.

It's not about magic and anyone else but bird, hence the name of the video. You're killing me man. So strong in your opinions without all the facts or statistics. Hope you keep your mind open and learn a lot from this video. I grew up in this era. Too many of your opinions without all the facts isn't a good look. Just saying... Watch and learn. ✌️🤷

Problem with doing videos on McAdoo or any other seventies star is the film has deteriorated a lot. Even a lot of Bird Magic stuff can be hard to see. Dr.J and Larry got into it. They were both thrown out. They made up a couple days later and agreed neither of them would ever autograph a picture of the fight.

I have to agree. This is about the dynamic between Earvin and Larry. IMO, it would be a distraction to drive too deeply into individual team relationships.

Diving for loose balls and playing with concussions, and overcoming physical limitations with effort, yeah I imagine Boston could identify with Larry. Magic embodied LA. It was a perfectly scripted rivalry.
