THE dad is 100% right on the money. I had to prove to my gf's father that I was stable economically and that I had the best intentions for her and his possible future family before he gave me permission to ask her hand in marriage. ON top of that my gf respected her father and told me no permission no marriage. I love my woman!!!!

Almost a decade now and this song is still awesome - love it. And the "I may be a Christian, but I'll go to prison, I'm not scared of doing hard time" is the best line ever. 😂👍 As a dad with a daughter in high school this parody gets more relatable by the day. On a side note, great voice and singing.

I understand why people like this video, however i don't think that a dad should have a say in who their daughter marries. Dads don't own their daughters, so if she wants to marry someone, he shouldn't stop her. And yes, i do realise that this is a parody, but hypothetically, if the situation was actually happening, the daughter should choose who they marry

I agree. Even if the person the daughter chooses to marry is a complete twat, that's kind of the parents' fault for not raising her to know what kind of man she should marry. If I have daughters I'll teach them to marry a guy who is respectful and loves them and works hard for them.

I just asked my girlfriends father and mother for their blessing. I want in-laws, not outlwas. We sat down and I explained my intentions. I don't see why you are disturbed, the whole tradition of the woman listening to her father's advice and being protected under his wing until she is married is actually practical for the woman's sake. The world is crazy, so you should see why a father would want to protect his daughter and make sure the man she marries has integrity and can provide for her financially and protect her physically.

Your genes are your legacy, you can sing it from a scientific point of view and still be considered offensive, lol. Parents want the best for their children (well at least some of them). Sometimes learning lessons can be hard. For instance, imagine a child was born and the other person ditched the woman because of financial stress or something of that nature. That is a lifelong lesson that could be detrimental to both mother or child. Men should be able to support themselves first and then others if they want to be making a family.

I don't have any kids.. But I agree with this guy's point. You should have some respect to the parents of the girl you're marrying, and get their blessings. If they're being tough on you, you need to man up and prove your worth.

i hope you realize by saying that you are implying other things... her parents dont trust her judgement even though she is fully grown and their blessings are more important that HER wishes to marry you. Getting approval has absolutely nothing to do with ability to be a good partner or parent. As for this guys point, it is ridiculous. He raises a woman to be intelligent and is her guide to what a husband should be (PS. that IS a fathers role) and then doesnt like the guy she wants to be with.... if you get to that situation i think u messed up the parenting part of being a parent.

Getting an approval is important too. You would want your family and even your friends to like who you're marrying. You can get married anyway without their blessing, but your significant other disliking your friends/family, or vice versa can be a problem in your relationship down the road. Your parents just wants the best for you. And just because you're fully grown, doesn't mean you will always make the best choices. I've seen fully grown people have kids when they don't even have a job nor a stable living condition for the child. And it has nothing to do with how your parents raised you. Your surroundings will influence your choices in life, and if you messed up, it doesn't always mean it was your parents fault. At this point in your life, you have no one else to blame but yourself. Your age is just a number, it doesn't define your ability to make good decisions. =D

I at least respect this song for being specific, which Magic! did not. 1. This is the first time the dad has ever seen this guy. 2. The guy drives a Ford Pinto, which was produced from 1971 to 1980. It has a reputation of bursting into flames from rear-end collisions due to lax safety standards for American cars at the time. Not a car to be taking someone on a ride... 3. The guy only has a job in fast food. Minimum wage. And he's 28. 4. The guy still lives in his mother's basement. 5. The guy called the dad "rude" simply for saying no. 6. The guy threatened to run away with the daughter. I don't know about any one of you, but if THIS guy wanted to marry my daughter, then I would not approve either. I wouldn't threaten to punch his face or put him at the bottom of a lake, but I can understand why someone would. Think about it. This is your daughter, someone you took care of up to their early 20s, someone you love more than anyone else in the world. Although she has her freedom, whatever happens to her will indirectly affect you emotionally (and financially if the husband cannot support her). That is a scary thought.

That's what I've been trying to tell people. As the song says, he's doing what a father should do. He's protecting his daughter because he loves her, and they say she can do what she wants? I mean ya she will grow up, but the father doesn't want her getting hurt. Has no one ever seen shows that show like an 18 year old killed or an older person got killed because of their boyfriend or husband? That's the whole point. He's trying to protect his daughter because he's scared she'll get hurt or that will happen to her. People who say that have no heart and don't care about their parents. They should be respectful. In all respect, parents don't control their children's lives past the age of 18. Parents usually know best, but people have to learn the lessons for themselves. I hope to raise my children in a way where they respect my authority and opinions, though not ultimately live their life by them. Humans have free will, and anybody encouraging restriction on this is living life wrong. You can tell people not to do things, but at the end of the day, they're going to do it anyway. I respect my Mother, and love her very, very much, yet against her wishes, and through very tear full eyes, I moved to the opposite side of the country with someone I loved and had been with for many years, but my family knew was bad for me. They were right, but I had to learn the lesson the hard way. There are obvious exceptions where I would protest: If their partner was religious, did drugs, a severe alcoholic or had a violent background towards previous partners, but never because I just "don't like them". It wont be my job to like my childrens' partners. It'll be my job to ensure they will grow up with the decency to pick someone who is decent and good for them.
