I saw him at the Ashgrove in LA shortly before he passed way toooo soon. I've seen a lot of great guitarists over the years, but he remains in my mind as one of the best I've seen. He lit up the place.We were all so shocked at his sudden passing,can't help thinking what might have been.

Pretty sure Sam was using Earl Hooker's guitar for that show too. Usually you aren't nearly as comfortable playing a guitar that isn't set up for you. So, that's extra impressive in my book. He's really burning it down.

He sure was .. but a guitar is just a tool.. see what Wes Montgomery did with Kenny Burrells L7.. set it up for you ? it was his best sound he ever recorded .. it was in 1960 I believe.. and Im sure he didnt touch anything on that guitar.. just played it ;)

So funny that so many of the modern blues guys are total gear addicts and spend thousands upon thousands of dollars to get a sound like this, which is just a knockoff les paul and most likely cheapie amp. Real bluesmen dont care about their gear, its just the tool used for self expression.
@johnroberts1141
@johnroberts1141 Жыл бұрын
No pedals, often not top of the line guitars, and just a cheap amp turned way up until it distorts.
@Baghdadbatterymusic
@Baghdadbatterymusic Жыл бұрын
@@johnroberts1141 Exactly. Some of the most powerful blues music is just hand claps and singing. The right gear can help you better express yourself, but blues comes from the heart and soul. No piece of gear can compensate for lack of feeling.

+Steven Palmer Are you looking to stir up trouble? Did you see that I deleted my other comments? (I did that because I wasn't looking to have an argument with a stranger, an argument that was becoming personal, about musical taste or aesthetic judgment.) There's a big difference between the two musicians (nothing I said or will say is meant to be a slight toward Gary Clark Jr.'s music). Because I love Magic Sam's music and there isn't enough of it, I was thrilled to hear there was someone of his stature playing today. I just don't hear the similarities or even an equivalence on any level. Magic Sam's attack and phrasing on guitar were like no other (not that they came from nowhere) and were matched to his voice and what he did with it. Everyone should love what they love. My comments--whatever they were--weren't meant to depreciate Andy Thomas's relationship to either musician. But there never will be a "new Magic Sam"--there was only one.
