This came at exactly the right time for me. My son is 6 and learning to truly read and I thought Pokémon would be a good way to motivate him and HOOOOOOOOOOLY SMOKES I was, as a magic player, completely flabbergasted. My flabber? Gasted. I had so much fun and he had so much fun and together we had the most fun and now he can read. And man. Seeing how Pokémon TCG works now was just bonkers.

Same here. My son just turned 7 and bought him Pokémon Battle Academy at Christmas. He loves collecting cards for his binder, and has Pokémon plushies, and the early reader books. Best of all, for not much cost when compared to MtG MtG is the superior game IMO and it isn't close. However, MtG is far too complex to teach my son, and the card quality is terrible compared to Pokémon. My son recently pulled a full-art rainbow foil and it's a thing of beauty. WotC foils are more like pringles. Also, free digital code in every Pokémon pack so that you can also have a digital version without double dipping. Aside from the core gameplay, WotC and Papa Hasbro have made MtG such a poor experience on every level due to greed, sucking up as much money from their player- base until they hit lint

@@gentrelane Don't know if you have kids but if you do, and they're learning to read, and they like Pokemon, it's the perfect motivation. Get two decks (there's a bunch of two deck combos available at stores sold together, meant to be good matches for each other) and do a quick survey of the important words (for example; deck, search, shuffle, discard, energy, etc. etc.) and gather those words into a list. review those words with the kiddo, make them read each word AND THEN spell it. Then time them for one minute and give them a card or candy or whatever if they read a bunch and then if they read more than they read yesterday and so on and so on. If they finish the list in under a minute, have them start at the top and repeat. Do that for about a week and then they'll be ready to play. Takes 5-10 minutes a day and it's super fun.

I don't know, I feel like my pokemon experience was trying to play a dragonite deck and actually evolving my pokemon like an idiot and then having to face nothing but arceus dialga palkia tag. It wasn't fun.

@SicklyNickable 10 ай бұрын
@@hugoguerreiro1078 Yeah its not unfortunate, but I’ve had a similar experience with every card game. You try to homebrew something and learn that it doesn’t work and try again. Its true of all card games. Eventually you learn what makes good decks good and apply the same concepts in every game, so that even if your deck isn’t top tier, its still functional
@hugoguerreiro1078
@hugoguerreiro1078 10 ай бұрын
@@SicklyNickable I din't really have this experience in other card games though. Or when it happened it was addressed by a banlist. It seemed like the only viable cards in pokemon were the special mons that gave the opponent 2 or 3 prizes on KO (which is horrible balance because there is no drawback when you only have 1 prize left), and even then more than half the people were using the exact same deck. Maybe I just tried it at the wrong time and arceus tag got banned, but I don't see such a massive difference between the top deck and rogue decks in other card games. Not to mention that pokemon's appeal used to be.the variety of pokemon. When the only viable ones are those that got those special cards the game loses its appeal to me.

@@hugoguerreiro1078 You’re right, generally multi prize decks are stronger (they are generally the chase cards, just like how rares and mythics are typically the stronger cards in MTG). Seeing those old pokemon arts hit me in the nostalgia so hard. It's difficult for me to ever get back into the pokemon TCG since I always feel really melancholy when looking at them now after my mom sold my collection in a garage sale back in the 90s (which included a couple Charizards that today would sell for a lot)
@RealGuitarG

Yknow, if it makes you feel any better,, alot of those old charizards, from the base set are really only worth a couple hundred bucks, most in fact, Unless you have a very specific, shadowless variant of the first edition card. And even THAT card isnt worth the millions people think it is. A couple of celebrities, namely one of the paul brothers, and i think the rapper logic. WAY over payed for a couple of them during covid and sent everyones perception of value through the roof. So its probably not quite as depressing as you think. You maybe lost out on $300

Pokémon’s lower entry cost to get into makes it more accessible to new players, and they have better intro sets like their stadium box. Also, the digital card code is just a bonus, you get to buildup a physical and digital collection for double the fun.

I used to be a Pokemon Professor for TCPI back in 2017-2019, and I was a judge of some few TCG events in my area. I still play it now, and I've played it since base set in 98 or so. Sometimes I quit, but I always end up coming back because the game is just legitimately great fun, with incredible artwork and simple mechanics with complex mastery. Oh, god, Yugioh since like 2015-ish is the most boring card game ever invented. There is ZERO interactivity. Going first? Play solitaire for 10 minutes, lock your opponent out of the game, you won! Going second, didn't start with a bunch of handtraps or massive broken boardwipes? You lost! If it were inexpensive, like Pokemon, it MIGHT be a cute novelty, but instead, the cards are 10x the price, AND there's no reprints, AND they get rotated out via banlists & powercreep faster than cards actually rotate in Pokemon. In Pokemon, if you want to stay at the forefront of the meta, it'll run you about $200-ish per year. (And cheaper decks are actually playable.) In Yugioh, if you want to even stand the tiniest chance at even playing, let alone winning, you HAVE TO buy the newest, most expensive archetypes & staple cards, spending upwards of $2,000 a year. And the community is so unbelievably toxic.

I first noticed this when you were covering InQuest magazines a while back; I grew up reading those as well. I also got my Pokémon cards at Books-a-Million as a 12 year old. There's more but I don't have to go into it. Anyway - I really appreciate this video. I haven't played the Pokémon TCG since 2003, but my favorite thing about it was how many cards I could draw. Before those cards were limited to once a turn some decks would draw 30 or 40 cards in one turn. It was invigorating. And I miss it. I had no idea there was a digital Pokémon TCG. So thank you for this; I'm gonna give it a shot and go say hello to Muk, Primeape, Linoone, and all my other old friends. Lastly - if you ever wanna play that Pouncing Jaguar again - I'd like to invite you to the Premodern format of Magic. It's a warm and welcoming community, both in person and on our discord and Facebook group, and it's the most fun I've had playing magic that I can recall in the last decade. 10 Land Stompy lives on, there. Pokemon player here! I love getting to hear experiences from other TCG players on how they feel about Pokemon and I'm glad you had a great time trying it out! The bit at the end where you talk about our relationship to the cards as players is amazingly spot on! I love hearing stories as to what these particular cards mean to others and why. Great video! :)

Loved the video. My story was quite similar but the other way around. I come from Pokemon TCG. Opening a Blaine's Moltres back in the day was my Balduvian Horde. Moving to MTG was quite a change, and I greatly appreciated how difficult drawing cards was. It makes it feel very rewarding when it happens. Probably the difference in our similarly symmetrical stories would be that I also consider myself an MTG player 🙌

Thanks, Dev! We have a growing Pokemon community at the store (where I play Commander), and I've been considering giving it a try. (Pokemon didn't exist when I was a kid, so I never played it.)

I worked at a game store about 5 years ago and I learned to play Pokemon there. I totally agree that it felt VERY powerful, and it was a lot of fun to pick up and play! The thing that holds it back for me is that it's a fairly rigidly 2 player game. When I play magic I would say that about 80% of the time there are more then just 2 players, so swapping to Pokemon... or at the very least ADDING Pokemon to the game night roster was difficult to pitch to my buddies

Unfortunately, yes, however, there are a lot of "underground" formats you can play in Pokemon if you look for them. I do envy Magic for having draft but Pokemon has some cube draft going on as well as Pick a Pack.

I’m a 3 time Pokemon Worlds competitor for the TCG, and unfortunately that doesn’t leave much time for MTG, but when I saw this from one of my favorite MTG creators talking about Pokemon TCG, I was so stoked! What a fun video, only “miss” I saw is that Radiant Greninja is actually one of the scariest attackers in the format, it can be powered up with Mirage Gate in Lost Box decks and Baxcalibur in Chien Pao, which sometimes runs its’ whole strategy on Cross Switchers and Cancelling Cologne to get around Manaphy to attack with Radiant Greninja as early as T2 of the game knocking out 2 pokemon! Would love to see more pokemon videos, but also I love your magic content too, glad to see you had fun playing Pokemon.

Awesome video, as primarily a yugioh player we have a lot of free casting, but the insane card tutor/draw in the game blew me away. I really resonated with the mid coffee break too, everything is so cheap and good look sometimes you just buy cards cause you like all the little guys :) Never really done that in any other card game I've played

I'm having a very similar experience right now so I'm quite happy seeing this on my feed. I love deck building and just playing with friends. Pokemon lets me do that for the fraction of the price and I can play with more people in my group since to really enjoy MTG you have to be in it deep. There are a lot less frustrating games since mana (energy) fixing and card draw in this game are insane. I haven't played vintage but I did play pauper and this feel a lot closer of an experience for me. It's really like bite sized magic and it's honestly so refreshing.

Hey, you're never too old for Pokémon in my opinion. I've been into the video games since I was 10, but I got into the TCG with the Sword & Shield era. I currently run a Gardevoir ex deck, and am looking forward to building a Glimmora ex deck (Glimmora is probably my favorite Paldea Pokémon from my time playing Scarlet) when Obsidian Flames drops

Fun fact: Pokemon had crazier Standard formats, what Pokemon tends to do is rotate set out, so certain archetypes or decks that were dominant go away in lieu of new decks taking over the format. As such the format changes yearly and expands as more sets get printed. I remember when Shaymin EX, Skyfield, Colress, and Lysandre Trump Card were a thing. Colress is a Supporter that allowed you to shuffle your hand and draw based on the number of benched Pokemon (both yours and your opponent's), Skyfield was a Stadium card (think field spell in Yugioh) that allowed both players to have up to eight Pokemon on the bench. Shaymin EX is a card with the ability to allow you to draw until you have 6 cards in your hand, you can run four copies of it. Lysandre's Trump card was a Supporter that forced you and your opponent to shuffle their discard pile (graveyard) into their decks. So what would happen is a player would use Skyfield, fill their bench (and their opponent will too because there is a Tier 1 deck that hits harder the more bench Pokemon there are), play four Shaymin EXs to draw through their entire deck (since there are a lot of discarding cards to empty out the hand and there are a lot of tutors or search cards in that format), play Colress to get SIXTEEN cards then the next turn use Lysandre's Trump Card to prevent a deck out. Later on, Lysandre's Trump card got banned (because it negated a win condition) and years later Shaymin EX got banned and future cards with similar effects became a once-per-turn effect.

yeah the bw to xy era was insane with trainers, we also had a suporter that searched 3 basic pokemon and put them on your bench, a Item that gusted like boss, that was errata to be a coinflip, a item that put 3 cards from your deck into your discard pile, just a insane time

@@R8Spikethe very early days were an absolute nightmare too. Wasn't uncommon for a match to be over turn 1 (you could attack turn 1 back then, even if you went first) people would burn through oaks, computer searches, bills etc to slap four plus power on hitmonchan or Erika's Jigglypuff and be hitting 60-80 on a single attach. Back then those were bonkers numbers

i used to play pokemon as a kid but then switched to ygo when that came out. some years ago i stopped playing ygo because the game just became a horrible mess but i always need a tcg in my life. mtg is extremly difficult to get into so i decided to look into pokemon again .. and i wasnt dissapointed. i kinda came back around that time because i remember being extremly hyped that my favourite pokemon, rayquaza, being playable in the tcg. pokemon is easy to learn and play and not difficult to master either so its a welcome introduction to anyone who wants to get into tcgs. my favourite meta was night march tho, i know many players hated it BUT night march mirrors were really skillful and it took correct techs and management of ressources important, the better player usually won the game which is something healthy. also what i love about the pokemon tcg is that sure it changed but it still feels like pokemon tcg, in yugioh if you sit out a while you have no idea whats going on. simplicity sometimes is worth a lot.

Great video ! I used to collect Pokemon cards when they first came around as a kid (same with Yu-Gi-Oh!) but no one ever really played the game. For most kids around my school it was more about collecting than anything. I did however play the original Gameboy Color game, so i at least knew HOW to play it. Just no one was interested back then. Around 3 years ago i got into MTG and it's honestly the best card game out there with the amount of cool formats, cards and lore, but sometimes is getting incredibly complex the more you go down the rabbit hole. I decided to try and relearn the Pokemon TCG with Live as well and I'm having a lot of fun honestly. It's fast pace fun, not complicated and having you Pokemon, Trainers and Supporters fill your field and hands is so much fun. It feels like a lot of duels you try to play every card in your deck and sometimes even can. Drawing an Energy card at a point you might not need it does also not feel as bad as drawing a mana with too many in hand already, since so many effects let you draw a lot of cards. Actually got me back into Pokemon and maybe building a couple of decks with my friends to play once in a while. I really hope they can improve the game though, since it kind of lacks a lot of QoL stuff and modes
